    I believe you're referring to a rotary engine. Mazda experimented with them a number of years ago, but I don't believe anyone is using them anymore. I don't recall the name of the actual shape though.

    Reuleaux triangle. *whew* I knew I would remember it some day. You are correct, though--I don't think anyone uses a Wankel engine at this time. Check the Curve of Constant Width page via Wolfram's MathWorld site.
