A whole post for the Promenade? That's stupid, you say. And, yes- yes it is. I'm doing this for my own reference as much as anyone else's. The next time I take a break, I want to have a ready reference on my early BG2 steps. Read on if you like, but be ready for a pedantic-metagamey-snoozer. You've been warned.
Ok, so to my future older self (and anyone else who might care): you want to leave the Promenade with all the items you'll need for the first half of the Slaver Quest. You should also need but one additional item for the second half of the Slaver Quest, with that item being the Ring of Air Control. You should acquire the RoAC with the gold raised from Slaver part 1. Area transitions should be Promenade->Slums->Promenade->Slums.
Now, let's talk about those items for Slaver 1. Decent armor, Girdle of Piercing, and The Reflex. For emergencies, a Potion of Invisibility, a Potion of Firebreath and healing potions. You'll need those same items for Slaver 2, plus a Potion of Freedom and the RoAC. How do you pay for them? By selling your items from the Chateau, knocking off Kalah, and triggering the first two Guild War encounters. You'll need to fight the peasants, Kalah, and the Shadow Thieves from Guild War 2. None of this should be hard, but watch Guild War 2, if you don't have crit protection and do have a low HP total.
Time for work. Let's take down Kalah first. And, hey, why not do it with a friend?
@Alesia_BH The SoD cap is 500 000 xp. You gain about 2 level in SoD (only one if you're a paladin/ranger). I personally think it's not too bad, and it's a nice little reward for completing a quest that is harder than BG1. To give you an idea, I don't think that soloing SoD on a blind no-reload playthrough has a high probability of success. Even if SCS has no specific SoD content, the enemy is rather intelligent and "SCS-like" in its behavior.

The cap sounds reasonable. There's still the question of how much exp characters end up with in the Chateau after the over-cap points are returned. What are those number like?

I don't remember, but you could simply adjust your xp with EEKeeper.
On another note, I think that the removal of the SoA cap in the EE has much worst consequences than the xp boost from SoD. HLAs just break SoA. I had a solo fighter in SoA on Legacy of Bhaal difficulty (not no-reload though, it was a test run before tackling the real thing) and even on LoB, things were too easy once you have HLAs. Not much can stand in the way of a 25 strength fighter and his simulacrum (from Vhailor's helm) whirlwinding bullets from his sling. I took out the Warden in less than a round : one arrow of dispelling and bye-bye !! On LoB, for crying out loud.
That's why I decided to respect the vanilla xp cap next time I'm in SoA. I understand that it was a necessity for those who wanted to so Watcher's Keep, but THAT throws off the balance of the game. Actually, next time I'm in SoA, I won't go in WK before ToB (or maybe only fhe first level without the statue fights) just to make sure of that.
It felt good to be back at the Copper again. Real good. It was like a homecoming, but with rancid beef, slaves, and -worse still- Anomen. Glad to be back, in any case.
Not too long ago, I swore off juking the guards near Hendak's cell. Unfortunately, I neglected to CC Aestica on the memo. She juked them.
As for the beastmaster and his pets, they were beaten, not juked (which, incidentally, is also my signature martini order).
Aestica parked in the doorway, running DUHM and wearing plate mail, paired with the Girdle of Piercing and The Reflex. The animals waited in line to be stabbed to death, meanwhile, the Reflex left the Beastmaster standing around with his stick in the air.
Finished the Beastmaster in the open just to give the Copper patrons a show. Bullet to the face.
Ok, back to the Promenade for the RoAC. Excess gold was used to start fleshing out the defensive potion collection. Ready for Slaver 2.
First: hobgoblin shamans. Activate the RoAC.
Hurdle cleared.
Next, kobold shaman 1. He went Hold Person, unsurprisingly. With her RoAC tapped, Aestica faced a choice here between using a Potion of Freedom or a Potion of Invisibility. She opted for a PoI, since they're easier to replace. Second hurdle cleared.
Onto kolbold shaman 2. Used the Cloudkill trap to save potions.
Grabbed Lilacor, slept to recharge the RoAc, and then entered the Love Boat. Nixed the Priest of Cyric while Haegan tossed his junk at The Reflex.
To the guards. Most of them were taken down in toe-to-toe melee. Wisely, the plate + Girdle of Piercing wearing, Reflex bearing, Aestica targeted the blunt weapon wielders first. We want slasher, piercers, bow-wielders on the field, not bluntees.
Haegan, who had quaffed an extraordinary strength potion, got the sling.
Fin!
All we have to do now is cover Suna Seni and a few minor quests and we'll be up to date! Woohoo!

I respect that. And I think you'll enjoy it. My most enjoyable run ever was my first successful Trilogy No Reload. It was an RPed party game. We rushed to Imoen as soon as we could, completing our stronghold quest only and skipping the others. By skipping excessive side-questing, we ended up south of HLA land until after Gromnir. By the time we defeated Mel, my protagonist, Alanis, was still in the low-mid 20s.The balancing felt exactly right.
I've always felt that the SoA cap should remain in place for SoA, and that excess experience should NOT be re-instated after exports/imports. That's how I'd like to play, at least, ideally.
I've done a blind no-reload of SoD, documented earlier in this thread. It was one of the best no-reload experiences I've ever had.
Ditto!
I was surprised to actually have survived, but it was on an overoptimized Fighter/Invoker character and I played it like a paranoid kitten. Good times.
With one semi-major quest under her belt, and the goods to fix Suna Seni, Aestica was ready to explore the city.
She solved the Skinner Murders, picking up a levelup..
and then ventured into the Graveyard District.
Post Crypt King, pre-Littleman, Suna Seni appeared. That meant barbecue time!
Potion of Invisibility->Withdraw->Oil of Speed->DUHM->RoAC II->Return->Potion of Firebreath. If you're thinking this was overkill then, yeah: you're right.
The question at this point was simple: roasted or skewered? Who would survive the fire and get stabbed to death instead? I was kinda-sorta surprised when the flames took down each and every, save Suna Seni. Bummer for you Suna Seni: It can't get worse that that!
Ok, good point: I guess it can get worse...
And with that we are up to date. Aestica is resting at the Five Flagons, planning her next move.

And another ditto from my side. I played very careful though, much more than I would normally do. However because my theme was a transmuter who only memorised alteration spells and used only evocation scrolls on the side, the planning was a lot easier. No thousands of spells to pick from .
I highly recommend SoD, the battles are refreshingly different from the other games in the series .
So, we are in the City. Jaheira isn't particuarly happy with that while Imoen has her little pranks with Xan's outfit.
Next we get acquainted with local Thieves' Guild and had some shopping in Sorcerous Sundries: Arrows of Dispelling, Potions of Invisibility, Mirrored Eyes, Clarity (at last!), Freedom and scrolls of Secret Word, Vitriolic Sphere, Dispelling Screen:
The road here were long and tiresome so it is time for some rest and celebration. Imoen has a very special gift for me:
The night is long though so we had enough time to finish some tasks for our new friends from the guild, obtain a telescope for Brevlik, finish the 'poison' quest, get Sea Charts and help little kid to get his brother back to life (getting Ring of Fire Resistance alone with Tome of Understanding).
Imoen was the one who finished Marek so the Eagle Bow is rightfully her main weapon now:
We didn't want to kill Jalantha Mistmyr so after tricking her I just cast Sanctuary and left. Though a bit later, when we've entered the Low Lantern, she suddenly appeared out of thin air spitting curses and turning the whole crowd there hostile so we just hadn't another choice...
Desreta and Vay-ya tried to teach us of some entropy pleasures but we didn't like the sound of it. Angry mob fettered our movements so we had to move between the desks. Detect Invisibility (in IR it lasts 5 rounds ticking each round, like mini True Seeing/Sight) thwarted Desreta's attempts to hide and backstab us while wands made a short work with Vay-ya.
Viconia and Jaheira cleared Ramazith' Tower for Amulet of Metaspell Influence (Immunity to silence, Casting Speed +1 for any caster), Tome of Understanding and we've crafted the IR Nymph Cloak (nearly the only source of Blindness in my setup):
Aldeth needs our help again so why not, considering the reward: Cloak of Protection +2 and Robe of the Weave: +20% Magic Resistance (former Robe of the Good Archmagi)
Through some boogie-woogie with Gervisse and into the Entar Silvershield's Estate to deliver the family heilroom and pick the Manual of Gainful Exercise.
With gained Strength bonus now I'm able to wear the Shield of the Falling Stars +2. It penalties my accuracy and casting speed quite a bit but the bonuses are too nice to be cast aside.
Resar hurt me badly during scripted scene but dropped a nice wand and another girdle for Viconia as an excuse:
Down to the Sewers we are to take care of Ogre Mage (Full Plate Mail +1 and Scroll of MGoI) and look for some corpses.
While Imoen already excels in the skills of Find/Remove Traps and Open Locks she'll never be nimble enough to safely pick someone's pocket (even under some steroids). And what people usualy do being caught on the crime scene? Right, they run!:
Viconia took some heavy buffs to tackle Niemain & Co (a bit of metagaming on my side) but then suddenly changed her mind and choose a polite response. To not waste her buffs we gape a bit at the Sunin's house who didn't tolerate an excessive interest... Well, another Ring of Wizardry and Robe of Arcane Might (ex. Robe of the Evil Archmagi) for me to wear are really good excuse.
By the time Viconia could handle Degrodel's Doom Guards, Invisible Stalkers and Helmed Horrors all alone (with very little help of her teammates) just fine while Wand of Fear, Obscuring Mist, Slow, Silence, Hold Person, Detect Invisibility are enough to handle Gretek and his Maulers of Undermountain comfortably. With Light Crossbow of Speed obtained there now Imoen is constantly torn between it and her Eagle Bow.
Down in the western part of the Sewers we took our revenge on Giant Spider who caused the demise of my first incarnation and had a pleasant chat with something jelly-like named Schlumpsha the Sewer King.
With the clearance of the rest of the Sewers and finishing some minor tasks all that is remained to do in the City is to deal with the Iron Throne. This will be our next task but for now this Tale is finally up-to-date with our progress.
This habit has bled over into my RL, actually. When I travel/adventure, people sometimes ask how or why I always have the exact right things at the exact right moment on every journey, despite carrying an unusually small & light bag. I have never answered that question.
Oh yes, for some of us, the lack of foresight is the father of many check-in issues and back pains.
And with that we are up to date. Aestica is resting at the Five Flagons, planning her next move.
So I did my reading and now I'm finally up to date as well. A very enjoyable start. And if you ask me, sharing these details and particularities is just the kind of guidance/inspiration that we, for whom non-reloading in SoA is a rather rare occasion, can appreciate.
@Serg_BlackStrider And the Tidiest Party Inventory Screen Award for 2017 goes to... Anyway, it's great to see such a thorough and proper adventuring in the City! Keeping my fingers crossed for the upcoming challenges.
@Borco: Thanks! Yep, I like to find things in the places I've put them. Definitely, it takes some time to organize them but in the end it saves a lot of time when it's really needed. Having the same items in the same spots for all party members helps to minimize a wild searching for them in the heat of the fight and to more easily and quickly assess available resources. Digging through the Bag of Holding or other containers when arrows fly and swords hisses under your nose is just not a fun... After all, vanilla BG doesn't even had a pause for inventory! Yes, it's convenient and I use it but it's far less realistic. Also, I'm pretty sure most of us even forget to use the special abilities of the items we have equipped every now and then. And when you put the items in the container you might forget about them completely pretty quickly.
@Alesia_BH: It's standard in this thread to put images in spoiler tags for the sake of shortening load times for viewers with slow connections. You can put things in spoilers by enclosing them in the following tags... [ spoiler ]Peekaboo![ / spoiler ] ...but without the spaces.
Peekaboo!
Or you can highlight a section of text, click the paragraph button on the bar above your comment, and select "Spoiler" from the drop down menu, which will automatically put some spoiler tags for you.
I've used spoiler tags in the past in this forum. I can resume doing so if others prefer.
Note, though, that the trimmed low res jpegs that I use are pretty small (~50-150k). A page full of them would only be about 1-2 mb. Also, I can bring the file sizes down further still, if need be.
(I, personally, have always preferred posts with inline images. And if load time issues can be mitigated by reigning in file size, the downside is minimal. I'll go with whatever others want, though)
I always thought that pictures in spoiler tags need to be loaded anyway when you access the page. The only reason to use then would be to clutter the screen less for huge posts. The main item to address is file size for the pictures, so people need to save a proper for format or resize
I have a question - are IWD runs allowed here? I drunkily made non-minmaxed, no-max hp, all female party with portraits exclusively provided by @darko1beamdog in his pack, and I feel like sharing.
my two cents: if someone uses trimmed JPGs, I see no problem with including the image inline (such as Alesia_BH does). Myself, I will use JPG and crop the image so only the bare bones necessary actually shows. I've no issues with load times so far.
I think the criteria should be is anyone have any issue with the loading of the pages? If yes, then use the spoilers, but if no one complains they don't need to worry about it. On the BioWare forums, that's one reason it got brought up, as some people were having issues with the very slow loading of the pages.
But many of us have better and better Internet, it may be less of an issue today than it was then.
I think the criteria should be is anyone have any issue with the loading of the pages?
Agreed. If load times are really-truly a problem -and using Spoiler tags does really-truly help- then, sure, we should use them. If not, though -if Spoiler tags are more a non-solution to a non-problem- then players should feel free to move away from them, if they like.
I think having a mix of formats in posts is appropriate anyway. I tend to use spoilers partly because I prefer telling stories by text rather than pictures. However, some people take the opposite view so it seems only reasonable to cater for them as well .
I tend to put images in spoiler tags unless I think it particularly interesting. i.e. The image at the start of a run with all the details of the character, or if something amusing happens during a run. I prefer that as it makes it easier to find a particular post that I am searching for. Yes, I sometimes read a post more than once but like Corey I always convert the bitmaps to jpgs before posting. However I used the word tend quite deliberately as I am not always consistent.
I suppose that clicking on a spoiler for every image would get tedious. I'll try posting without spoilers for a while, though it may make my already-lengthy posts even longer.
Or maybe just put large sections of a post into a single spoiler, so it won't take up an entire page on its.
@Artona: IWD runs are acceptable. We've already seen some IWD and even IWD2 stuff on this thread, and people have floated the idea of doing a minimal-death PST run as well.
I would have even done Paper Mario and Dragon Warrior Monsters no-reload runs here if I hadn't died stupidly before I started posting.
