@Borco for what it's worth I would continue in that situation. I've often noted apparent discrepancies between the stated result and actual effects, e.g. text reporting that creatures have saved, but in fact they are clearly blinded or the sort of rogue status notification you've seen. Given the frequency that seems to happen to me I suspect it's unlikely that I would be able to complete a trilogy run without that type of event, so see little option but just to accept actual results.
Thanks for sharing your experience Grond0. What you propose sounds like a reasonable way forward, however, I've decided to consider it as failure as Amestris was not supposed to rely on save vs. effects anyway.
I am interested in re-playing her, but for now I will give a chance to some of the other characters I have in mind...
Before tackling the mines of Nahskel, Cedvar decided to send Dynahier and Minsc packing in the night. Better they be away from Edwin for their own sake. And having a Red Wizard of Thay with you has it's advantages. That said, Cedvar promptly picked Jahiera and Khalid back up from the Arm, met Kivan on the way to the coast, and began plying it for any clues of the Iron Crisis.
They had a few close calls.
The potion of clarity from Candlekeep really came in handy.
Imoen's NPC project content is always good fun. Her begginings as a mage are already clear.
Clearly Mask smiles on Cedvar. What a backstab at such a low level, with just a +1 dagger!
After a brief encounter with the Doomsayer (which ended in Cedvar dragging Khalid's body to Nashkel, raise him, and return to beat the thing down in Round 2), the group is ready to sweep down and around Nashkel, before entering the Mines.
@ussnorway Blade is too combat-oriented for my current taste, Skald is better suited for a party play (although they can be quite respectable characters on their own) and Jester wouldn't be a good choice from role-playing perspective (and would not fit the portrait ).
That said, I am more than happy to run unkitted and free.
It's been a couple weeks since my last update on Dante's progress. Unfortunately, NPCs in Cloakwood started spouting item descriptions instead of their dialogue so it looks like I have some incompatibility in the mods I have installed.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a minimum install that works?
I thought I had a pretty minimal install going this time with:
BGTutu G3 NPC Pack Hard Times Unfinished Business SCS
I'm thinking next attempt will just be:
BG Tutu G3 NPC pack SCS
Has anyone installed Unfinished Business or Hard Time with those 3? Also, what order did you do the installs?
Firstly, I'm not sure what you mean by G3 NPC Pack. A link would clarify things. I presume that you have not got EE as that changes things considerably and there is a much bigger chance of bugs with it being largely untested.
If by G3 NPC Pack you mean BG1 NPC Project, that installs fine with Tutu, Unfinished Business and SCS.
Install SCS as one of the last mods as it changes many things that will be overwritten by other mods.
Hard Times also changes a lot and I am not sure whether it should go before or after SCS.
I would definitely install BG1 NPC Project and Unfinished Business at the beginning. I don't think that it matters which of them goes first.
For Tutu installations, this page is VERY helpful:
Grond0 Is right as far as installation order is concerned, but the links aren't always to the most up to date versions of the mods. To be sure, go to the people who make the mod.
Selûna used stealth at first to enter the base of "The Section." This enabled her to decide when and where to fight the "Section Operatives." They eventually reached Paul Wolfe the head man at the base. Web, fireballs and cloudkill were the most effective spells. The party did get badly hurt from time to time as the Section Operatives were well-armed. The result of this is that Selûna now has several +3 weapons. She also has nearly 60 sets of full-plate armour which she sold with the result that instead of being poor, she now has over 100,000 gold pieces with many more items which she could sell.
Nikita, an assassin, objected to them trying to murder Selûna and has now joined the party.
This meant that Neera had to be dropped.
I am now trying to decide whether to use the +3 weapons. They seem a bit overpowered for BG1.
SuperNovice what base games are you running? ... vanilla should be fine with them all but the EE becomes more of an issue, Beamdog or gog Dragonspear will not work with SCS but V2 (no Dragonspear installed) does
Unfinished Business should be ok with SCS... i've tested serveral runs without "faster bears" or "shape shifter edits" over the years... no major issues
Selûna had no difficulty rescuing Duke Eltan, killing Cythandra or killing Kirstin and Slythe. Kirstin virtually killed herself with cloudkill when summoned monsters were sent to fight her whilst everyone else fought Slythe. They have now come across some Teldorn agents near Nashkel and they thought that dealing with them was more urgent than Sarevok now that his plan to become duke has been thwarted.
Thanks for the responses everyone. This is the second corrupted install I've had so it's either going to be run with no mods or look for advice from some experts. It's really frustrating to get most of the way through the game only to find out the install is messed up.
@Wise_Grimwald I was referring to the BG1 NPC Project. I had it saved in a folder called "G3 NPC Pack" and mislabelled it in my original post. Sorry for the confusion.
@ussnorway I'm running vanilla BG. It seems like the mods should be fine as I believe these are the same Alesia_BH had suggested on the old boards as a stable install. I have a suspicion the issue is the Hard Times mod as the changes it makes are pretty extensive. I really like the extra challenge though so am hoping that I can get a stable install with that mod installed.
@Grond0 Thank you for the link! Very helpful. It definitely looks like I'm installing these in the wrong order, assuming I'm reading the documentation on this page correctly. This should be a huge help when I reinstall.

Whilst what USS Norway says WAS true, modmerge has ironed out most of the difficulties though I don't know if it has solved them all.
I have used it with EE on a heavilly modded game and so far have had no problems. (I have beaten the doppelgangers at the ducal palace)
The only problems that I have had has been a conflict between Romantic encounters and Item Upgrade and ones with the Stone of Askavar which are surmountable. Anyone installing the latter should read the thread on this forum regarding that mod BEFORE installation.

If I can install that lot without major problems, I think that we can safely say that the problems with EE are now almost solved.
Buckshot boys - archers party (3rd and final update)
The boys faced a stern challenge almost immediately on arriving in Jon's dungeon against an SCS ogre mage. Stealth allowed them to escape its initial attack and then a series of rests saw it finally fail against Bhaal horror and after being englobed its stoneskins were insufficient protection. With missile weapons and ammunition in short supply stealth melee attacks continued as they made their way past various groups of duergar and mephits, but they'd stocked up enough by the time they got to the cambion to shoot him up. The remainder of the dungeon then passed off without incident. They managed to protect the battle mage long enough for her to wear down Ulvaryl until a potion of firebreath could finish her off.
The boys all got to level 8 by escaping the dungeon and celebrated with a trip to the circus. After reporting to Gaelan Bayle stealth allowed them to get the drop on the Copper Coronet guards before shooting down a scared beastmaster. With Bernard's full stock available Robin bought the Blade of Roses - partly as a decent weapon, but also to maximise his discount on future purchases. Looking to get a bit more money to take advantage of that the boys went into the sewers under the Copper Coronet and cleared those - stealth allowing them to get a clean kill of the cleric. After killing the trolls (which took a lot of arrows - melee weapons are really needed to make sure of the SCS trolls) they triggered the acid blob trap before returning to the Coronet to heal up and buy a Sword of Flame and Stonefire. Back again they quickly cleared the remaining area - the slaver mages don't have PfMW and were not able to deal with the weight of shot from stealth attacks. Everyone then had sufficient HPs to run over the poison trap on their way out of the front door.
Stealthy travel took them to the Docks where they picked up Mae'Var's quests. On the way to the Temple district to get the necklace they were ambushed by Suna Seni, but as everyone was in stealth they were able to immediately kill the mage before his buffs fired and finish the others off without casualties. Back at the Docks they went to Rayic's house. Their saving throw weakness was again apparent as the whole group were slowed by the golems, but their initial attack from stealth allowed them to prevail easily enough anyway. Upstairs, Rayic was another enemy to be too slow to get his buffs up to deal with the incoming horde of missiles.
Before invading the guildhouse the boys decided to look for some ankheg armour. They knew of a shell available in the Bridge District, but ran into Renfeld on the way there - once more killing the mage immediately to make the others easy enough. After another ambush on the way back to the Docks they got Cromwell to make up the armour. In this installation (unlike BGEE) it can't be used with a ring of protection, but still offers a potential benefit through making all those invisible thieves a bit less likely to hit with their backstabs.
After returning Renfeld they jumped in and out of Prebek's house a couple of times while shooting down the mages. They looted the harpers then successfully surrounded Lucette and got a little bonus treasure by killing her (also getting up to level 9 in that encounter).
Moving on to Mae'Var the boys only took a couple of backstabs in clearing the upper layers. Downstairs they used a sneak attack to ensure Mae'Var couldn't respond before withdrawing quickly. Showing themselves one by one with the intention of getting only single assassins attacking at once they successfully spread further backstabs among themselves to avoid any casualties. Artemis and David were the only party members who hadn't been backstabbed, but when the party went outside they came across Salia with a couple more thieves and Artemis and David got their share then!
Next up was the Fallen Paladins. While William ran those round the others shot from the sidelines - Anarg going down quickly and the rest not lasting long either. While in the area they picked up the berserker horn and solved the skinner murders - the Rune Assassins didn't want to be drawn upstairs separately, but fortunately they didn't use any of their invisibility potions so didn't last long.
While doing the Sir Sarles quest they came across Sansuki and William was drained a couple of times running vampires round while Azuredge did its work. To help with that problem the boys decided it was time to invest in some items from Aran Linvail. On the way there though they came across Parisa and she was extremely lucky against Azuredge - draining all 5 of the other boys before Cupid eventually scored the winning hit. After seeing Aran Linvail they went on to Sir Sarles where I got a bit distracted and failed to drop the real illithium - that was unfortunate for Sir Sarles, but also for the boys' reputation! The Temple seemed blissfully unaware that their work of art was likely to take rather longer than expected though, so after making a few donations the boys carried on with a bit more work for the Lathander temple.
Despite having had a clear warning of the danger from SCS improved vampires, when they saw Tanova and a couple of other vampires the boys decided to have a go at her. They made a good start by managing to get Tanova to chase them away from the other vampires, but once more she successfully resisted a number of hits from Azuredge while using ethereal form to regenerate HPs from melee attacks and mixing in clouds of bats, domination and invisible backstabs to cause trouble to attackers along with her level drain. I was starting to think about making a strategic withdrawal, but had left it too late! William had already been drained once (by 4 levels), but still had 45 HPs and I didn't think he was in critical danger. However, when hit again he was not only killed, but chunked. Initially I thought that was a bug, particularly as the text reported that it was Robin who had been drained, not William. However, I don't understand the mechanism for chunking by level drain, but I can imagine it could go something like: 1) apply damage from strike 2) apply theoretical loss of HPs from losing 4 levels 3) if result is that theoretical HPs are less than a given number this results in chunking. For direct damage the given number would be -10, but where HPs are already below 0 and another form of damage occurs this causes chunking and it may be that level drain is treated in this fashion (if so I think that's unfair as it's effectively double-counting the damage, but it still seems possible). 4) I guess the text saying Robin had been drained was the result of William no longer being treated as a valid reporting target and effects therefore were stated as being applied to the PC.
In any case whatever the actual mechanism for the chunking I'm not going to continue after losing one of the full party, so that's the end of this run. If the boys get another go at some point in the future they'll probably leave the vampires alone until they have more than a single (non-proficient) missile weapon to hit them with (or at least buy the odd protection from undead scroll) ...
@ussnorway I agree with Wise, no shame in death by fish stun. It's happened to other no-reloaders. If you play a race that doesn't have great saves (humans, elves), then can easily happen. If in "fish" country chaotic commands on your main character is probably a good idea. If you don't have a divine caster, then high AC is your next best defense. If you character allows it, you could also dual-wield Mazzy's sword in the off-hand.
@ussnorway I can sympathize. I hate Kuo-Toans - they are so annoying in many, many ways.
Goibniu, human paladin, update 22
The Planar Sphere:
Goibniu entered the sphere and activated it after defeating a clay golem, with Owain tanking. The first significant encounter was the fight against the halfling group. I had Helios and Donar start with backstabs:
However, while Helios retreated in order to hide again, he was hit by a dominate spell. This resulted in my summons instantly attacking him - 2 hits were enough, so there's my first BG2 character death with this randomized party. Had to happen at some point:
The remaining party members killed the halflings, and Luna resurrected the dead thief.
After some more battles, the party reached Tolgerias and his mage friend. However, Helios' backstabbing attempt was foiled by a bad damage roll:
Tolgerias survived and got his protection spells up. Helios moved out of range, while I had my spellcasters use summons to draw out the most dangerous spells. However, this time, outsummoning didn't work, since I hadn't prepared for such a strategy - the enemies still had plenty of spells left when I was out of summons - so we relied on a breach spell and simply attacking Tolgerias. Meanwhile, the other mage hit the party with low level nuking spells. I realized that I was taking a lot of damage, with several party members wounded when Tolgerias was finally dead:
At this point, it hit me that my remaining enemy was casting spells as if under the effect of improved alacrity - he was simply spamming his entire spellbook at me, dealing more damage than potions could heal. An unusual bug I don't think I've encountered before (and yes, this mage is definitely not capable of casting improved alacrity in my installation, nor did he do so) - and the effect was devastating: Owain was killed before being able to cast breach again, and the rest of the party could only try to break through the mages stoneskins by simply attacking. Before he finally died, the opponent managed to kill not only Owain, but also Luna and Donar with his scorchers, magic missles, acid arrows etc.:
Turns out fighting mages is much harder if they have what is propably the most powerful mage HLA permanently active without even having to cast it.
Luckily, no permanent damage was done to the party, as I had a rod of resurrection and Luna could do the rest. Now, the fire and ice rooms were cleared without issues, and the golems were dealt with from a distance with weapons like Firetooth, Tansheron's and the Crimson Dart:
After resting again, the party encountered Lavok, who failed to defeat a couple of skeletons (sent in one after the other). It was time to find a demon's heart. The party used their usual summons and buffs, though Anapa got an extra cc spell to protect him from constantly getting stunned. Success:
And we're done! From 0 character deaths in BG2 to 4 in one area. That was tough.
@Grond0 Tough break there. As for the chunking and level drain, I don't think it's damage related. In my experience, any character who is level 1 and gets drained will often get chunked, but not always. This is how it seems to work in vanilla, anyways. I also think the damage is applied first. E.g., if I am level 1 have 10 HP and I get hit for 8 then level drained, I think I am just dead. But If I get hit for 11 HP, I am dead, but the level drain still happens and if it happens your character is chunked.
I suppose if someone had nearinfinity you can find the item ID for the upgraded Sword of Grief which has level drain, use SK to put the item in a player character, and test out this mechanic
Another thought: maybe it's the reverse (e.g., if damage kills you and you are level 1, you are dead and not chunked (e.g., died before level drain effect took place). But if level 1 and damage doesn't kill you, and then level drain to level 0 happens you get chunked).
More Info: According to 2nd Ed. D&D rules, level drain is supposed to work like this: "A character with negative levels at least equal to her current level, or drained below 1st level, is instantly slain. Depending on the creature that killed her, she may rise the next night as a monster of that kind. If not, she rises as a wight." So rather than make your party member some monster, guess BioWare decided to chunk you instead...
@Grond0 Tough break there. As for the chunking and level drain, I don't think it's damage related. But If I get hit for 11 HP, I am dead, but the level drain still happens and if it happens your character is chunked.
The point is though that the character wasn't level 1 when hit. He was originally level 9 and had been drained down to level 5 by 1 hit from Tanova - that's why I thought a second hit would do no worse than kill him. However, that depends on just how the mechanic works - for instance it could be something like: - level drain takes character to level 1. - HP loss from loss of levels takes HPs to 0 or below. - damage from hit is then applied chunking the character.
Alternatively if the damage is applied first it could be something like. - damage reduces HPs. - level drain takes character to level 1. - HP loss from loss of levels takes HPs to 0 or below. - game considers the level drain to be an additional effect to HP loss, chunking the character. I think this mechanic would be unfair (comment in my post about double-counting), but I don't think it's impossible it works like that.
@Grond0 Remember Corethief got chunked by level drain in our Quad. Also, do we know vampires' APR? Maybe they got two quick hits on your character. I think you like to play high FPS so that would be quite possible if so.
After playing with a party for a while I thought it was time to get back to solo with another attempt at completing BG1EE and BG2EE. Failed attempts at that are now up to 69 and I'm still looking for my first success, so I thought perhaps I should try a nice easy class - and a wild mage seemed like a suitable option
I started by risking casting find familiar to get a few bonus HPs. Only a couple of friends spells have been risked since then while: - killing Shoal by sling to get to level 3. - some more sling work around Beregost got me to level 4. - taking routes to avoid the most dangerous ambushes I went down to Nashkel and then to pick up the wand of frost at the Nashkel Mine. That was used a couple of times to soften up Greywolf before it was back to pure sling against Meilum. - after buying the necklace of missiles and the green protection from petrification scroll the basilisks suffered death by sling (the last of them getting me to level 6). Mutamin then fell to Korax before Baerin, Lindin and Peter got a frost blast each to help Korax settle them as well (Kirian having been paralysed with the first attack of the battle).- the ghasts were lured out of their tomb to let me grab the wand of monster summoning. - there were a few more uses of the frost wand in working through the Cloud Peaks to get the charisma tome. - still travelling on safe routes I went up to the FAI. I was a bit slow dodging one lot of magic missiles while working through Tarnesh's mirrors, but still killed him without danger. - with reputation at 19 I was keen to help Farmer Brun and thought a single charge from the wand of monster summoning would probably allow passage past the 3 ankhegs guarding their treasure. That looked like being not quite enough though so I invested the final of the original 10 charges from the wand of frost (that also got me to level 7).- another lot of monsters allowed passage past the ankheg guarding the route to Ulgoth's Beard. I successfully risked using a friends scroll there to allow the best price while purchasing all the goodies there. - the new wand of frost quickly disposed of the battle horrors at Durlag's Tower. Potions of mirroring protected against the basilisks on the roof while frost blasts and staff attacks killed those (getting me to level 8). The greenstone amulet then allowed the tome to be recovered safely. - at the lighthouse area one set of summoned monsters was just too much for the first set of sirines while I looked on invisibly. Another lot of monsters dealt with Sil before I shot up the golems with +2 bullets (for convenience using the greenstone amulet against hold and charm traps). - with constitution up to 18 I bought the Claw of Kazgaroth at High Hedge and a clearout of items in containers just allowed the purchase of the robe of the good archmagi in addition.
Everything went very smoothly in that opening session and it will be time to crack on with the main quest next. Wild mage L8, 50 HPs (incl. 6 from familiar), 148 kills
A question to the experts: I intend to start a (much postponed) SoD run finally. (Been maintaining old pre-2.0 BG/BG2 for my runs with SCS.)
I wish to know what is the state of SCS with SoD and version 2.0? Anything I should know or avoid?
Also, @Demivrgvs : What is the state of Spell Revisions currently? Is it stable with SCS+2.0+SoD?
Any links to latest versions and install guides are appreciated.
(If it makes a difference, I am running a Mac.)
Many thanks in advance for the help.
Oh, forgot to add:
I know BGEE through Beamdog, Appstore, and Steam. (Come to think of it, I have purchased about 8 incarnations since the original 5 disc set...) I hear that not all versions play as nicely with mods. Is that true? What is recommended for SCS etc.? Will Steam work?
Comments
I am interested in re-playing her, but for now I will give a chance to some of the other characters I have in mind...
Regards,
B.
Cedvar: Level 5 Thief
Imoen: Level 5 Thief
Khalid: Level 4 Fighter
Jahiera: Level 4 Fighter/Level 4 Druid
Edwin: Level 4 Conjurer
Kivan: Level 4 Ranger
That said, I am more than happy to run unkitted and free.

This enabled her to decide when and where to fight the "Section Operatives." They eventually reached Paul Wolfe the head man at the base.
Unfinished Business should be ok with SCS... i've tested serveral runs without "faster bears" or "shape shifter edits" over the years... no major issues
They have now come across some Teldorn agents near Nashkel and they thought that dealing with them was more urgent than Sarevok now that his plan to become duke has been thwarted.

Hard luck and no shame involved.
However, I don't understand the mechanism for chunking by level drain, but I can imagine it could go something like:
1) apply damage from strike
2) apply theoretical loss of HPs from losing 4 levels
3) if result is that theoretical HPs are less than a given number this results in chunking.
- Many hours of a thorough no-reload playthough.
Have my sympathy, @ussnorway!
In any case, hope your next attempt goes better.
Now, there's still the Windspear Hills remaining.
Enuhal
I suppose if someone had nearinfinity you can find the item ID for the upgraded Sword of Grief which has level drain, use SK to put the item in a player character, and test out this mechanic
- level drain takes character to level 1.
- HP loss from loss of levels takes HPs to 0 or below.
I intend to start a (much postponed) SoD run finally. (Been maintaining old pre-2.0 BG/BG2 for my runs with SCS.)
I wish to know what is the state of SCS with SoD and version 2.0?
Anything I should know or avoid?
Also, @Demivrgvs :
What is the state of Spell Revisions currently? Is it stable with SCS+2.0+SoD?
Any links to latest versions and install guides are appreciated.
(If it makes a difference, I am running a Mac.)
Many thanks in advance for the help.
Only a couple of friends spells have been risked since then while:
- killing Shoal by sling to get to level 3.
I know BGEE through Beamdog, Appstore, and Steam. (Come to think of it, I have purchased about 8 incarnations since the original 5 disc set...)
I hear that not all versions play as nicely with mods. Is that true? What is recommended for SCS etc.?
Will Steam work?
thanks guys... the shame is of course mine for forgetting about the stun they have
