Will I live long enough for this challenge?

@bengoshi commented about me completing no-reload solo games with every class. In the thread I suggested I would need to live to about 293 to achieve that, but I wondered how accurate that would be
To check it out I thought I would set up a (very) long-term project to test it - though it's always possible I'll lose interest after only a year or two ... That will involve playing under core rules using whatever the latest unmodded version of BGEE, SoD and BG2EE is. Character classes will be chosen randomly from those where success has not yet been achieved (using the same Excel spreadsheet approach as in my multi-player games with @Gate70, where we're currently on our 96th pairing). I've never completed BG2EE (or even got to ToB in it) - so using that set-up will allow a clean start with all classes available for selection.
For dual classes I'll allow 2 different versions, i.e. both a cleric-thief and a thief-cleric. I make that a total listed below of 76 classes (increased from original post, with addition of Priest of Tyr, Priest of Tempus and shaman). I'll show the number of attempts required for success with each class below (and colour classes achieved successfully in gold), but won't do any detailed write-ups. However, I will outline the way each run ends and after each successful run do a quick summary of the main techniques used and the pitfalls associated with that class.
I rolled up the first 3 characters (sun soul monk, wizard slayer dualling to thief and true class mage) prior to the release of SoD and for those am only requiring the completion of the trilogy. All other classes have to complete SoD as well (which at the time of writing in November 2016 I've never made much progress in, so is likely to result in a hiatus in progress ).

Edit April 2017: - as the thread is getting longer and more difficult to navigate I thought I would add in direct short-cuts to each attempt. Clicking on the classes above will take you to the relevant post. I've also put in brackets against successful runs the order in which attempts have been completed and the total number of attempts (with all classes) since the previous successful run. Thus, for the fighter-thief, 53 {1-99} means that was the first run completed, after 99 attempts with all classes, though only 53 with that particular one.
While writing, perhaps I should also clarify that all runs are using my long-standing rules that characters may not:
- use any item based healing, e.g. potions, rod of resurrection, gloves of healing (regeneration is acceptable)
- use antidotes
- recruit any NPCs. There are 2 exceptions to this:
1) Imoen in BG2, as the game forces her on you for the purpose of opening your cell door, and
2) Caelar in SoD, as except in MP or with a full party she won't fight on your side without joining you (to compensate for that I'm not allowed to give her any orders after she joins).

Rolling up my first character I've got a sun soul monk. That's a pretty hard one to start with - I've only briefly played that once in a MP run and though I've used standard monks a fair bit I've never been successful with one. Still here goes nothing ...
Made it through BG1,
Drat. Tried to take on Neb before getting a ioun stone and I guess he managed a backstab critical ...
Double drat. Things were going very smoothly in BG1 when I took on Kirian. As Korax died I ran away out of sight and successfully hid. When nothing seemed to be happening I came back towards the party, only to find that a hold person was on the way and Baerin was just coming into sight. I was too slow to take a potion protection and stealth didn't last long enough to provide protection. That was getting into my typical careless habits again - really need to play more tightly to make inroads into this challenge
Triple drat. Another one goes - this time against Sil's sirines. That was partly taking a risk, but also a different game mechanic. I considered whether to refresh greenstone amulet protection during a fight, but decided not to in the belief that if he had already started activating it when confused he would continue and even if that didn't happen would have a high chance of winning a melee contest while confused anyway. I hadn't taken into account though that in BGEE the sirines not only confuse, but also feeblemind a character ...
Fourth attempt has at least got past Sarevok. Now let's see if I can make a rather better fist of BG2 this time.
I've had about enough of this pesky monk, but will have one more attempt while the appropriate strategies are fresh in my mind. And restarting straight after the previous death the 5th attempt has gone past Sarevok.
It looks as though the only real chance of progressing there will be to aim to kill her quickly rather than having a drawn-out battle - that's likely either to require holding back lots of GWWs or reluctantly making standard use of healing to allow a prolonged attack.
Despite not intending to play any more for a while I fell victim again to BG disease (just one more time...) and restarted. It didn't take too long before Sarevok was again on the menu in attempt 6.
And number 6 paid the typical penalty associated with playing too much. The Crypt King was near dead himself, but hit with a critical to take the monk down to 19 HPs. I hesitated about whether to run or risk staying there, but did eventually turn to run - but too late.
It's now definitely time to try a different character for a bit and I rolled a new random class - which was a monk! Deciding not to proceed with that I tried again and got a true class mage. The game play for that is very different, so will give that a go.
After trying, and failing, with some attempts at a couple of other characters a seventh attempt at a sun soul monk has gone past Sarevok.
And after being robbed of a first success with a wizard slayer to thief dual I tried an eighth attempt. Once more though that ended with a mistake - RL distraction resulting in a failure to reapply the Greenstone Amulet against Sil and her companions.
It's a few months since I last attempted this character, so decided it was time to give it another go in a 9th attempt. This one seemed to be lucky at the palace when 3 of the dopplegangers ran from his horror, but the others still managed to kill Liia and badly injure Belt before being neutralised. I forgot to take potions of perception for the fight with Sarevok, but still found it easy enough to hide round the pillars and beat him up.
One point to note is that updates since my last game have changed the sun soul ray to single target rather than an area effect (the latter not being originally intended). The animation sometimes looks vaguely like a swarm of insects, but I quite like it - on the basis that you can see the ray shattering the soul as it departs from the body. Here's an example of Drasus snuffing it.
SoA was easy enough. There was lots of use of stealth early on, but as levels rose (I hit the level cap while beating up Bodhi's vampires) there was more straight up melee mixed with ranged GWWs for the odd potential danger on the way to Irenicus.
There was one significant error early in SoA when I forgot that the sun soul monk's area attack was not enemies only - that resulted in a hefty reputation penalty as well as making the skinner quest impossible
The monk in ToB is a beast with decent AC, vicious attacks and 100+ MR, so there really shouldn't be a problem getting back to Melissan - but we'll see ...
And we did see - regrettably. I couldn't remember whether dragon fear was blocked by magic resistance, but took no precautions against it anyway. That proved fatal when I started running in horror from Abazigal - he tracked me down in no time and a few bites ended the run.
A 10th attempt immediately followed on my first success in this challenge and for a while it looked like maybe I could get an immediate second success. However, once more Mel's 3rd incarnation proved a stumbling block with her use of timestops - next time I really must concentrate my efforts on trying to prevent Mel casting rather than dealing with her summoned creatures. That run was fully documented on the no-reload thread - the final post (which has links to all the earlier posts) is here.
A 11th attempt was made a couple of days later, but my heart wasn't really in it. I made a right mess of getting the Bhaal powers I wanted and the lack of horror would likely have proved fatal at the Palace. However (possibly thinking too much about that encounter), I didn't concentrate on what was happening against Slythe and was cut down by a critical.
I've concentrated better for number 12 so far and had a fairly easy run through BG1. I was exceptionally lucky at the Palace where my opening horror sent 4 of the dopplegangers running and Sarevok was then finished off by stealth attacks without problems.I continued playing to a high standard in BG2 and had no problems in clearing the Chapter 2 & 3 quests. I suppose I was feeling a bit bored though because I decided to explore the 3rd level of Watcher's Keep - I've never completed that in single player (I think I must have done it once in MP, but don't remember it). Without really knowing what I was doing I did overcome numerous challenges up to the point of finding a demon wraith and a slave army (at which time I was level 39). I got slightly careless there though and was level drained and assume they have some sort of aura of fear as I started running scared (with the huge impact that level drain has on saving throws failing a save would be fairly easy) and never recovered.
I'm reasonably confident that I now know how to get success with this character and the 13th attempt has gone past Sarevok. This time I'll try and focus on just completing the job and racking up a second success ...
My play hasn't been as clean this time, but I've made it past Irenicus. I've been relying heavily on the monk's resistances and nearly came a cropper when affected by a PW: stun in the Planar Prison. Fortunately the Warden and his yuan-ti concentrated almost entirely on magic attacks until I was free.
And this time I managed to make it past Mel as well in my 13th attempt with this class and 104th overall. As suggested following my last failure at the Throne I concentrated on attacking Mel with the pulse ammunition of the Big Metal Rod in order to disrupt most of her timestops and healing attempts.
Afterthoughts
Despite my somewhat gloomy tone at the start of this post I would say the monk is definitely one of the easier classes to complete this challenge with. At high levels the 100% magic resistance available means less precision is needed in defending against magical attacks, while excellent AC is also possible to compensate for the relatively low HPs by fighter standards. At lower levels stealth needs a bit of patience, but allows most challenges to be done safely.
The Sun Soul Monk version has decent magic damage available, with the instant casting of the sun soul ray being particularly helpful (allowing you to beat mages to the punch with spell casting). I think that makes the kit actually slightly easier to make progress with than the base monk.
I failed in an initial series of attempts to get a sun soul monk through. Everything up to the final battle is easy enough in principle, but I haven't yet been able to think of a reliable tactic to use against Mel choosing to melee during a time stop. I'll have another go at that in a while, but wanted a change in tactics. My next randomly chosen class was - a monk Deciding not to proceed with that for the moment I tried again and got a true class mage. That should be a fairly easy option to try and get my first success on the board and he's just gone through BG1 to defeat Sarevok.
Right, once more into the fray and Sarevok is down again courtesy of mage attempt 2. Let's see if I can make it count this time ...
And a third attempt fails - again to being held, this time by a ghast in Ramazith's Tower. I had been taking insane risks though (at least in the context of a no-reload), so there was no surprise there. I'll leave it a couple of days and see if I can manage a more sensible run.
Getting worse. With a 4th attempt I was trying to avoid any damage at all. There was no trouble doing that up to achieving level 5 and I went to the basilisk area to pick up some more 'easy' XP. The southern group of basilisks were soon killed, but I rested before going up to the north - where I didn't reapply protection from petrification ...
And descending to a new low even for me, in a 5th attempt I did the same again. With almost all the basilisks dead my attention was diverted by restoring a statue to life and again didn't reapply protection from petrification ...
After a while failing with other characters I started a 6th attempt - this time I managed to avoid being petrified by basilisks and have just finished off Sarevok.
A 7th attempt was being documented on the Bioware Forums to try and get me to concentrate and avoid mistakes. That was partly successful, although I eventually died as a result of a sort of mistake (when opening a trap on the roof of Durlag's Tower - not appreciating that in the Enhanced Edition mirror images don't protect against fireballs and other area damage).
An 8th attempt was also documented and made good progress up to getting a first HLA at level 18. I tend to find the need to buff a lot with mages a bit tiresome though and possibly being a bit tired of the run contributed to its ending at the Twisted Rune. Shangalar and Vaxall were dead, but the latter had got off an anti-magic ray just before dying, to remove the PfU protection used for Shangalar. Without thinking, I moved forwards (ahead of my summons) to cast an incendiary cloud on Layene's position and was immediately targeted for domination by Shyressa the vampire ...
Deciding I'd had enough of the monk for a while I started a 9th attempt with this class that I hadn't tried for about 7 months. BG1 was pretty straightforward with the only close shave being at the palace - Belt hanging on there at near death after all but one of the dopplegangers were confused by malison + chaos.Regrettably though there was another avoidable death in SoA. I had done all the hard work and was just coming up to my first HLA when I went to clear the vampire HQ. After sorting out all the fodder I rested and recruited some summons for Bodhi. My memory of her though was that she didn't use spells in this encounter, so I didn't bother with any buffs. That proved fatal though when my saving throw of 2 proved ineffective against domination (not sure if my memory was false here, or if that's vanilla behaviour that's been changed in EE).
And after finally getting the monk through I started confidently with a 10th go at the mage, only to fall to an old favourite - failing to recast protection from petrification after resting in between groups of basilisks .
An 11th attempt had been going pretty smoothly when I accidentally attracted the attention of a group of Cowled Wizards. I attempted to fight those and had killed 3 of them when the final one cheesily caught me with a ranged maze spell - a fuller report on the run is here .
A 12th attempt ended early on when I didn't bother learning invisibility and fell victim to a hobgoblin ambush.
After doing other things for a while I tried a 13th attempt. I was pretty patient and methodical for most of BG1, but a moment's carelessness eventually proved fatal. Going through the maze I wasn't paying enough attention and triggered a lightning bolt trap without reacting quickly enough to be able to pause and protect against that. Even so the chances of it killing me were small, but it appeared it chose my location to bounce back off the wall and a second lot of damage proved too much .
And another mistake ended number 14. I was eating an apple while clearing various battle horrors and ghasts at Durlag's Tower. After finishing that I paused the game while picking a bit of apple out of my teeth, only to realise just too late that the game hadn't paused ...
For the 15th I've at least got past Sarevok, though not entirely satisfactorily. There have been a number of occasions so far when creatures have hidden in the walls. They can usually be tempted out using area magic, but on one occasion a golem managed to step out by itself - it was lucky my HPs were so good this run. There was another problem at the palace when the final doppleganger disappeared into the wall. Belt and the Fist knew where it was and clustered round it, thus meaning I couldn't fireball it and a couple of chaos spells confused it, but didn't manage to get it to show itself. In the end I resorted to loading the autosave there. Another mistake ended this run though. I'd done the hard work to establish myself in Athkatla and was at level 15 after clearing Mekrath and his supporters when I got distracted and attempted to remove the portal gem without being properly protected. That meant I had a 10% chance of failing a saving throw against domination ...
Grr. I started number 16 intending to take a risk-free approach - only to be killed by a skeleton archer ambush in the very first area transition .
Attempt 17 was successfully done pretty much risk-free in BG1 and has just gone past Jon to finish off SoA.I did have to reload in SoA when I had one of those bugged deaths where nothing is attacking, when the portrait just suddenly disappears entirely. I dislike reloading even for bugs, but this seems to be quite a common one, so trying to get an entire run without it seems like a stretch too far. The closest I've come so far to a legitimate death was forgetting that I hadn't already triggered a lightning bolt trap.My experience with mages in ToB is fairly limited and I'm not keen on buffing a lot, so I'm not totally confident of making further progress, but we'll see ...
Not entirely unexpectedly, the lack of full buffing eventually proved costly against Abazigal. I did initially put up spell immunity (abjuration) to protect against a ranged maze attack, but didn't use spell shield or renew protection after that was removed by a secret word. With Abazigal on the cusp of near death, with lowered magic resistance, and sitting in 2 incendiary clouds his remaining life would probably have been short, but he managed to find a maze in time.
After a few weeks doing other things I've started an 18th attempt with this mage and just got through BG1. Let's see whether he can go all the way this time ...
So far, so good as Jon falls by the wayside. There was a significant error in SoA though when I absent-mindedly cast sphere of chaos in the Twisted Rune - disintegrating the Staff of the Magi . In practice though I hardly make use of that anyway, so it shouldn't really affect the outcome in ToB.
Well I managed to get through to Mel, but died mysteriously in combat with her 3rd incarnation. In order to conserve spell resources against her I was trying to wear her down by running and shooting with the Big Metal Rod. I had a scroll of protection from magic up to stop the damage from the Storm of Vengeance spells she was spamming and a potion of regeneration was also active to help keep HPs topped up against the missile damage she was doing. With 80+ HPs left there didn't seem any danger as I ran round for the umpteenth time, when this happened.I'm pretty sure that her missile weapon is not supposed to have an instant death effect, but that's the only way I think I could have legitimately died. However, the portrait didn't disappear (there's a fairly common bug that does this when death occurs out of nowhere), so I can't be 100% sure it was a bug and will accept the result. Next time I get to the Throne though I will be aiming to use an endless spells strategy and a planetar or two for each incarnation to try and finish Mel off quicker ...
After quite a long period of playing other things, particularly trying and failing to get a solo SCS LoB run going, I had a go at attempt 18. That seemed to be going well until it appears I made one of my favourite mistakes by not recasting protection from petrification in the basilisk area ...
A 19th attempt almost went the same way - but this time I saved against petrification and got out of range before the basilisk could try again! There were no more problems up to the palace, but that proved a disaster. After some recent discussion in the no-reload thread about the best way to approach that I decided to try my luck with casting Otiluke's Resilient Sphere on Liia. I was expecting her to be able to save against that, so took along a stack of 20 scrolls. Liia saved against the first attempt, but unfortunately it appears that Otiluke's is now coded as an offensive action in EE and Winski Perorate was not inclined to let me try again ...
I started a 20th run, but wasn't really in the mood and didn't last long. I deliberately activated Zargal with the intention of retreating and using sleep, but the dialogue interrupted the movement order and I couldn't get going again until after being poisoned by both archers - I couldn't then get far enough away to be able to rest before the poison finished me off.
A 21st was even shorter - a skeleton archer ambush on the first area transition giving me no chance.
I've been more focused with a 22nd so far and just moved past Sarevok.SoA is complete as well now, leaving just the final third. I was struggling a bit to maintain concentration in that phase and the nearest I got to death was actually a nothing ambush in the city. I was walking around without stoneskin or invisibility and was slow to react to the ambush triggering - and then when I retreated I managed to get stuck in a cul-de-sac by a wagon, resulting in an attempt to go invisible being interrupted. Fortunately, only one of the thieves was able to attack me in the narrow space, but I was still down to 11 HPs by the time I was able to take an invisibility potion.
Unfortunately that run ended with another failure at the Throne. I've found in the past that winning against Mel as a mage is hard work, so was looking for an easier solution and remembered that I'd seen posts describing taking her down in mind-flayer form. However, I suspect that must have depended on cheesy dispelling of weapons (which doesn't work in EE) as the flayer attacks couldn't touch her. That left me stuck in flayer / tensered form for quite a while, during which she brought out an army. I did eventually win that contest, but used up most of my best resources in the process and would probably have had no chance against the fallen solar if I'd got that far. As it happened I didn't get past Mel's second incarnation - a lack of concentration after the failed strategy against Mel #1 meant I was wearing the Amulet of Seldarine rather than AoP when fighting her second form. Things were looking good there with Mel showing at badly injured and probably due to leave fairly soon, but then a slayer shadow got a critical and level drained me. The huge effect that has on saving throws left me very exposed and moments later I was stunned by one of the many earthquakes Mel was spamming ...
Rather than look for short-cuts I really should stick in future to what I said I would do after attempt 17 above .
A 23rd attempt looked like finishing very early again when a skeleton archer ambush appeared on the first transition, but this time I survived. However, that was only a temporary reprieve as a bit of RL distraction led to one of my old favorite deaths - failing to recast protection from petrification after resting mid-way through clearing the basilisks.
The 24th once more hit the skeleton archer ambush - but this time failed to get any further ...
In the 25th my penchant for taking risks proved costly. Progress had been pretty smooth in the run up to arrival at Baldur's Gate. After killing Ramazith there was no particular reason to fight up through his tower, but I couldn't resist doing it. Taking on the ghasts it would have been easy enough to throw up some immediate summons, but I decided to try and pull them outside the tower and kill them there. I had a ring of free action, so there was no need for any danger while doing that, but I didn't wear it. That all meant that I was vulnerable to the nasty trick BGEE plays where you can exit a building before a chasing enemy, but they actually arrive outside first and even the instant of time between double-tapping the space bar was enough for a ghast to land an attack ...
For number 26 I at least found a different way to die. After killing Dushai for his ring I moved a bit carelessly into Shandalar's sight on the way to the inn. I didn't think that was a problem as I thought that he only forced you to do his quest if you'd already killed his daughters. However, I didn't know the dialogue that followed and the only options that were obviously refusing the quest were also offensive, which seemed dangerous. In trying to make a more neutral response I got transported to Ice Island. At only level 3 that was seriously bad news. There are quite a few potentially nasty traps in there and I had no spells or items that could help protect against those, so aimed to push levels up by killing inhabitants to get a few more HPs. Using webs and blindness I'd done pretty well - getting to level 4 and close to level 5 when I triggered a lightning trap ...
The 27th once more featured a bit of interest in the manner of death. For a change I charmed Silke before dragging Karlat out of the nearby inn. She hit him with one magic missile - badly injuring him while I ran away a bit. As I cast invisibility and disappeared I noted Silke starting to cast improved invisibility. I didn't mind if she got injured, so over-rode that with a command for another magic missile. Unfortunately I didn't take account of the fact that given the time taken for her to get a clear aura, her AI might then over-ride my command - and she cast lightning bolt instead. Killing herself as well as Karlat was fine, but taking me as well was a bit too much .
And the 28th also failed to get out of BG1. I concentrated better for most of that run, but let things go at the Palace. I started the fight by sending in buffed summons and turning Liia invisible. Typically she just does nothing during the fight, so after checking at the end of the first round that she was still invisible I didn't bother casting chaos - which I reckon is the best option for a mage there. I paid no further attention to Liia and was therefore surprised when, with 2 dopplegangers still left, Sarevok informed me that the Grand Dukes were dead ...
After a few early baths the 29th has at least got through BG1. Most of that was pretty smooth, though to add a bit of interest I decided not to use lots of summons or potions on Sarevok (just a single charge to distract Semaj). As Sarevok was as quick as me that meant quite a bit of running round to get enough space to magic missile him - in the end though that was done.
SoA should really be no problem for a mage, but death is only ever an instant away! With a first HLA about to be received I went to investigate the mind flayers in the Temple sewers. After using Spiritual Armor and Improved Invisibility I thought my saving throw of -2 would be sufficient to show myself to them - but it wasn't. Thinking about it I do seem to remember that the standard mind flayers have a -2 saving throw adjustment on their domination, but the Ulitharid have a -4 ...
I wasn't really in the right mood for a 30th attempt and was too slow to run away from Neira when she cast a rigid thinking. I got outside, but in a confused mood and the guards there were not happy with being shot at ...
After doing other things for a while I started a 31st attempt. That's generally been pretty safe and Sarevok is down. I think it's about time I ticked this one off the list and tackled SoD more seriously, so let's see if I can concentrate ...
I realised immediately on importing to BG2 that I'd forgotten to pick up the pantaloons from storage - not a good start. However, things progressed smoothly enough as I passed through the dungeon and killed all the Cowled Wizards. At Watcher's Keep some vampiric wraiths didn't prevent me almost clearing the top level of the dungeon, before another cock-up ended the run. I had tried to pick up the slippers, but when talking to the lich priest I didn't have them, so my inventory must have been full. I had no spells or potions that could help when a finger of death chased my running figure, but with a saving throw of 1 that only had a 10% chance of killing me - but that was enough!
A 32nd attempt didn't get far, though I don't think it was really my fault. I'd just got to level 3 and bought invisibility at High Hedge in order to be able to travel safely. I tried resting to memorise the spell, but was ambushed by a couple of skeletons. They don't do too much damage with their daggers, so that didn't seem like much danger. However, I tried several times to move without the icon responding - it's not unusual to have a single click fail, but I'm not sure whether there was some particular reason for nothing happening in this case. By the time I'd paused the game and restarted (ensuring that movement was occurring) I'd already been hit several times and reduced to 8 HPs. I thought I was safe as I moved out of sight, but a dagger had already been launched at me - and it was a critical hit for 8 HPs .
Number 33 ended when I was concentrating on what I should be posting about the run and forgot about the need to take care when kiting a dire wolf.
To try and improve focus I did a bit of creative posting on the next run (last post here). However, that failed to prevent a careless mistake poisoning me early on in BG2.
A 35th attempt resulted in a self-inflicted defeat, though bug-related. At the palace I decided to try and rely on horror as a spell. The Bhaal horror ability is very useful in that fight, but there are better alternatives for a mage. However, although Liia died in the first round while I was casting Malison, 3 of the dopplegangers attacking Belt were scared by horror, while another was stunned by a dart - with Belt only slightly injured. That left just one active doppleganger, which was attacking a summon and nearly dead anyway - so the fight should clearly have been won at that point. However, I was slow to realise that the dopplegangers were ignoring the horror spell and continuing to attack (and probably I couldn't have done anything about it anyway) and Belt went down inside another round.
After a few weeks concentrating on LoB I've started a 36th attempt. As usual I've struggled to play risk-free (for instance clearing the entire ankheg nest without using any protections), but had no really close shaves on the way to finishing off Sarevok.
Moving on and SoA is done. That felt like a bit of a slog, but not many real problems. Can I finish the run off properly this time ...
And the answer is - no. I was struggling to focus on playing safe and was taken down to 3 HPs by Draconis as a result of not using any acid protection. The fight with the Ravager was also much more difficult than it should have been as a result of not loading +4 bullets on top of Everard's Sling. Errors finally proved costly against Mel. For some reason I had remembered her 2nd incarnation as not having death tyrants and didn't protect against those - nor against Mel's sleep effect on first appearing. That resulted in instant downtime followed by being dispelled while Mel took the opportunity to cast a timestop and nearly kill me during that. I was wearing the Big Metal Unit which cramped my style a bit and I was never able to recover - eventually getting trapped by summons and finished off by Mel's darts.
After a couple of months off from this I thought it was time to have a 37th go and that has got past Sarevok. The most worrying moment in BG1 was a result of mainly playing LoB/SCS recently where the palace offers different challenges - one way to help with those is to make Liia invisible, but in this installation that's no use as she attacks in melee. The delay that caused nearly proved costly, but the dopplegangers were malisoned then confused just in time to prevent them finishing off Liia after Belt kicked the bucket.
SoA is complete, though there were the usual lapses in concentration - in particular missing out on the goodies from Ust Natha as a result of telling the drow I was from 'the lair of Adalon' . There was one near-death experience when I decided to finish off a gauth in the beholder hive using a death fog. I don't use buffs much as a rule and the gauth reacted to the death fog by paralyzing me - that wouldn't have been a problem if it had continued attacking from range, but its morale failed with HPs down to 1 and it ran away out of the death fog. Fortunately when it returned it decided to attack in melee and the combination of the relatively low damage from that and the regeneration from the Ring of Gaxx kept me alive until the paralyzation wore off.
And ToB is also complete - though regrettably not successfully . The plan there was to shoot Mel up using buffs and a simmy and then regenerate spells during each break using spell trap. The first incarnation was duly killed along with Yan-C-Bin. I made a mistake while getting spells back though by casting haste from the simmy - with the result that I became fatigued. To deal with that I tried changing spells round in order to use wish and get a rest that way. Something strange happened though with the combination of the simmy and the wish genie active and I lost access to 8th and 9th level spells. Without a planetar available it was always going to be difficult to prevent Mel producing lots of summons (which then makes it much more difficult to keep her under attack) and she was only at injured status when I didn't react quickly enough to being malisoned and was stunned by an earthquake - and was eaten by the hordes before I could recover.
Quickly starting again with a 38th attempt I decided to freshen things up by restricting spell use to spells discovered, rather than allowing any purchases of scrolls. The lack of invisibility makes quite a significant difference and I also had no area damage spells (and wasn't using items). Instead I made some use of lightning bolt, which I rarely bother with. The changes to the projectile make that less dangerous to yourself in the EE, but it's still not risk-free. However, I was pretty successful with it for quite a while until being reminded of the danger while progressing through the Cloakwood Mine. I tried it out on a chasing guard, but must have let him get a fraction too close as the initial damage hit me as well as the guard. The projectile now bounces much less than before, but still bounces once in a random direction after hitting the original target - and in this case that resulted in me being hit again. For quite a while I'd been wearing the Boots of Grounding and those would have saved me, but they had just been swapped for the Boots of Speed ...
Number 39 is under way and has finished BG1. I was trying to minimise use of resources and nearly paid for that when Semaj managed to release a chaos at me through a spell trigger - fortunately I saved and then decided I should use a potion of magic shielding after all .
I was progressing pretty well in SoA with much of the work in the city done and up to level 15. However, I got caught out by my habit of giving traps a chance. I decided to open the acid trap in Neb's house without taking any precautions and my 65 HPs proved insufficient ...
After a couple of weeks doing other things Number 40 is through BG1. I suspect I must be approaching a limit on post length with this character, so must try and concentrate this time and get it finished. One problem became apparent as soon as I started BG2 though as there are no pantaloons. That was a result of cutting down some of the encounters I normally do in BG1 and not even getting around to going inside the FAI ...
Sigh - once again I found a way to die. I'd just gained my final level in the Underdark and was clearing out the illithid town. I'd sent a planetar in to tackle the brain and it did so in style with a one-shot vorpal. I'd remained well outside the room thinking that would be safe - but the brain's death unexpectedly stunned me. Inside the room the planetar was also stunned (I'm not sure whether by the brain or other illithid) and a golem and an illithid presumably decided that made me a juicier target and came out to grab the feast.
And after another couple of weeks it was time for number 41. Despite using lots of sub-optimal tactics I managed to survive BG1 ...
However, a lack of attention proved costly in the Windspear Hills. Rather than sending in summons against a group of vampires I used an incendiary cloud - prompting a vampire to chase out after me. It cast a domination and my save of -1 proved insufficient against that - I'm not sure if that was because it was stronger than a standard vampire or was coded as a necromancer and hence got a specialist bonus.
The usual lack of concentration ended attempt 42 in the maze on the way to confront Sarevok. I had just summoned several lots of monsters and selected them to walk through a group of traps in order to confront the two skeleton warriors on the other side. However, it appeared that I hadn't properly selected the monsters as I also moved to attack - straight through 3 lightning bolts and 1 fireball trap with aura clouded so I couldn't put any defences up ...
And for number 43 I was trying to stretch my protection for petrification spell in order to kill just one more basilisk - but it was only at near death when the spell ran out ...
Sigh - number 44 also fails at Sarevok. I did a more focused attempt this time and had never been in particular trouble in a quick run. Sarevok was lured out along with Semaj and a cloudkill put the latter to near death. He was then trapped in a web and finished off with MMs. I'd taken a potion of magic shielding so thought it would be safe to go in the web and run Sarevok round hoping he would get stuck, but I double-checked first that my buffs hadn't been dispelled. However, the instant I walked into the web I got stuck . That seemed very odd as I thought the battle had taken less than 2 turns to that point (and the potion lasts 3 turns), but Sarevok was happy to take advantage.
I felt I had been robbed in the previous attempt, so was minded to take a cautious approach for a 45th attempt - only to die in a skeleton archer ambush in the first area transition .
After doing other things for a while I continued with a 46th attempt. That was pretty focused in BG1 and there was never any real danger.
I was taking more risks in BG2 and that eventually proved fatal. In the Temple sewers I attacked a green slime in melee and was poisoned. I did remember that could be fatal, but thought I would have more time to deal with it so rather than use a green scroll I headed for the temple to buy a cure - only to die within a couple of rounds of the poison being inflicted.
Post continues here.
After failing with initial attempts at a sun soul monk and some horrendous mistakes with a mage I decided to generate a new random class - this time a fighter dualled to thief. My rules for dual classes allow the first class to be kitted and all the fighter kits look attractive to a dualled character. I decided to go with the wizard slayer though to give an outing to that much-maligned class.
It didn't take long to get up to level 7 while in the Cloakwood Mines and I was in two minds about whether to dual at that point. A particular advantage of that would be the ability to get the strength tome, but I eventually decided to press on to level 13 as the best point for a fighter - thief dual. The rest of the run up to the fight with Sarevok went well, but by that stage I was out of scrolls of magic protection and couldn't be bothered searching out any more. I knew that would be a potential problem against Semaj and indeed that proved to be the case. Dispelling arrows had already slowed Sarevok down and got rid of Semaj's initial buffs, but a second release of a tattoo of power produced a chaos spell and that proved decisive.
And a second attempt was worse. There was an error in movement against Mulahey, resulting in being trapped away from the exit by his arriving support - a hold person then proved fatal.
For the third attempt I only used magic protection scrolls where necessary - which proved fatal for Semaj (and hence Sarevok).
However, another mistake proved costly while assaulting Mae'Var's guild. His pet cleric saved against a horror, but I was perched on the exit point of the stairs in order to be able to run away from spells. Unfortunately I thought his cast had been disrupted (and didn't leave), but it appeared he was able to complete the spell as domination ended the run.
And a fourth attempt didn't get far when I thought Mulahey was out of hold person spells. However, he unexpectedly cast a fourth one of those ...
After a bit of a break a fifth attempt was also ended by a hold person. Two of the amazons were dead and Lamalha almost so, when Telka unexpectedly joined in the battle when I was already entangled by Lamalha.
An immediate sixth attempt was going well with the XP limit reached before going to Durlag's Tower to get the wisdom tome. Using a scroll of magic protection against the trap there I decided I might as well kill the ghost and Kirinhale, even though there was no real benefit to doing so. However, the latter appeared to have a domination on touch ability (or possibly her charm is counted as non-magical) and almost immediately ended the run.
As mistakes have been mainly responsible for failures to date I decided to fully document my seventh run to encourage me to keep concentrating. That probably helped and the run got to within a split second of success when Melissan was about to give up for the last time when the game crashed - I failed with a reload of the final save though. The final instalment of that run is at:
http://forum.bioware.com/topic/124277-baldurs-gate-2-no-reload-challenge/?p=20182037
An 8th attempt wasn't being documented and ended with another moment of carelessness. I was shooting Prat with exploding arrows, with the intention of killing Bor while he was out of sight. However, in the twisty passages I didn't notice him sneaking up while at near death. I tried to run round a corner, but might have been better using a LMD on him as a single dart followed me and the stun effect was fatal.
And a 9th attempt was once more ended by being held by one of Mulahey's long stream of hold persons.
A 10th attempt ended even earlier as I killed Bentan for his scroll. I assumed the spell he cast as he died was confusion and didn't run off the edge of the map to avoid it - but it was actually mental domination!
An immediate 11th attempt was ended by a bug. After successfully killing Davaeorn and flooding the mine I tried to get into the city, but found it was still closed (despite the journal reporting it was now open). Rather than muck about with resetting effects or consoling to new areas I decided to just give up there.
A 12th attempt, still on the same day as the 9th, 10th and 11th, also killed Davaeorn, but once more the chapter end didn't properly trigger. It looks therefore as though the game's got corrupted somehow, even though there are no mods being used. I'll try patching to the new version released fairly recently to see if that helps ...
A 13th attempt was using the V2.1 update to EE. That ended when I decided to continue attacking Kirian's party even after Korax was dead. Sniping at Baerin from long distance prompted Peter to appear and cast hold person. Although I was running and was out of sight of Peter when held, Baerin followed me ...
And number 14 ended at the Bandit Camp. Everyone except Hakt was dead, but I had been poisoned by him and leaked lots of HPs. However, with Hakt almost dead himself I was expecting to be able to rest any moment to cure the poison - but the game ended first when Hakt hit for the last 12 or 13 HPs needed to kill me.
Number 15 was even worse - a mis-click meaning I didn't run away from Nimbul in time. I did actually get into the shop before horror took effect, but Nimbul followed me inside and a stream of magic missiles ensured I didn't recover.
After a break doing other things I tried again, but with the same poor result. In the basilisk area Kirian and Baerin were dead, but against my better judgement I went to look for the others. With Lindin chasing after me I was a bit dismayed to see a hold person spell winging towards me, even though Peter had never seemed to be visible ...
After another long break I tried a 17th attempt, but again failed thanks to not playing things safe in the final battle with Sarevok - rather than just fighting Sarevok and Semaj I pulled the others out as well. Angelo proved extremely resistant to exploding arrows and hit me hard with his own arrows - particularly lightning damage. As I don't allow potions that meant I was down to 2 HPs when Angelo finally fell. That still should have been enough, as even though Tazok was still lurking invisibly somewhere his attack speed is slow so shoot and move should have been a winning combination. However, I went too far out while circling the temple and summoned a battle horror into the fight. A couple of those had already been created and destroyed while fighting Angelo and I switched back to detonation arrows for this one. Before it was dead, however, I must have made a slight mistake in movement and come just within the area of effect of one of the arrows - killing myself .
An 18th attempt successfully completed BG1, though it followed a very similar path in the final battle with Sarevok - with Angelo again nearly killing me before being shot down. Exploding arrows were once more used while running round to avoid being attacked by the still invisible Tazok - but this time I avoided the blasts, while Tazok could not.
Another mistake in BG2 ended this run, however. I was under the impression that the death of the casting druid ended a call lightning spell, so wasn't too worried when a shadow druid managed to complete a spell despite being nearly dead. The first round of damage was vicious, but the druid died before it could repeat.
A 19th attempt again fell to carelessness. I was attacking Bentan to both reduce reputation (to get horror) and grab his scroll of PfM. I ran away from him before he finished casting a spell and, thinking it would be hold person and he wouldn't come to investigate the results, didn't run off the edge of the map - that proved fatal when the spell was actually charm person or mammal. I really must try and concentrate next time ...
Number 20 was pretty good - until it wasn't. After killing Prat with the help of a first use of a scroll of PfM I had a scroll of PfP ready to use, but got distracted listening to some cricket. I realised my vulnerability as the basilisk came into view, but was unable to retreat before the first gaze hit ...
Growing up rapidly, my 21st attempt has made it past Sarevok. HPs are excellent, so that should provide an incentive to keep safe during the grinding in the early part of BG2.
A 22nd attempt was made after updating to v2.3. I didn't notice any obvious differences on the way to Davaeorn where a loss of patience proved costly. I sniped at Davaeorn and ran away a couple of times before a slight bit of carelessness meant I moved marginally too close to him. Davaeorn cast a dire charm (which has a faster icon than hold person). I did actually beat it to the exit, but not by enough and arrived upstairs to be greeted by the game ending screen.
The 23rd ended at the palace. That's the one encounter in the game where bad luck can doom you without any mistakes and this run was certainly doomed. After using DUHM I showed myself and tried a Bhaal horror as the dopplegangers appeared. That failed to affect any of them though and what was worse all 6 dopplegangers were attacking the dukes. One of them was beaten up enough to suffer morale failure in the next round before a second Bhaal horror was tried. By this time though Liia was already dead and Belt at injured status, so this horror needed to be very effective to give me any chance - but once more it affected none of the dopplegangers. With them all attacking Belt and hitting pretty much at will it was a matter of only a few seconds to finish him off, with just another morale failure in response. I think that's probably the first time I've ever failed to kill a single doppleganger in that battle (though Belt and Liia are far more vulnerable in the EE than vanilla or BGT, so this is now a much more probable outcome).
For number 24 I was pushing my luck by trying to attack Kirian's party early on. All but she were killed easily enough, but she was fortunate in successfully casting all her spells without any disruption - she eventually died, but two acid arrows on top of a lightning bolt proved fatal for me as well (as usual I'm not allowing any use of healing potions or antidotes).
Feeling enough is enough I've been trying hard with version 25 and this one successfully got past the palace challenge (1 doppleganger running from the first horror and 2 more from the second). He's just seen off Sarevok and is ready to start in BG2EE.
For number 26 I wasn't so careful, but still made it past Sarevok. There were a few close shaves on the way, in particular being trapped by the spiders in Beregost and having to kill 2 of them with a non-proficient staff before being able to run away off the map (poisoned and with only 2 HPs left). The EE now invokes auto-pause disabled in many encounters (including that one), but the way this is done is annoyingly inconsistent even in the same encounter (meaning I never know in advance whether the game will pause or not). Although I've been used to using auto-pause "enemy in sight" for many years I should probably stop using that now and revert to manual control instead.
The run ended at level 12, though this time in rather unfortunate circumstances rather than a mistake. I was attacking the slaver ship and had initially entered under stealth and tried and failed twice to use horror from out of sight of the priest. After resting I entered again and failed once more (this time from in sight) before immediately leaving. I successfully stealthed on arrival back in the sewers before 2 guards followed. After waiting several seconds I attacked those before running away to try and hide again. However, as I rounded a corner I saw behind me the priest, who had either followed into the sewers very late or was able to hide in shadows himself! I was wearing Aeger's Hide to protect from rigid thinking and immediately equipped Arbane against hold person - but he went all druidic on me and a charm person or mammal proved fatal.
After a promising run with an inquisitor ended rather cheesily it was back to the wizard slayer for a 27th go. This one didn't last long - a control error allowing Mulahey close enough to talk and I didn't then react quickly enough to get a PFM scroll up before being held.
After a while doing other things the 28th was looking good to complete BG1. The only encounter that worries me in that is the fight at the palace, so I was glad to see an exceptionally good result there from using Bhaal horror.
The 29th attempt benefited from a new keyboard - to address a sticky pause button that's caused a few deaths. That's helped successfully defeat Sarevok this time, though not until after an extremely dodgy fight at the palace - Belt being down to his last few HPs before the last doppleganger attacking him was killed.
/>
A 30th attempt failed at the palace. My first horror failed to affect any of the dopplegangers and all of them attacked the dukes rather than me - giving them virtually no chance.
And a 31st didn't last long. I couldn't resist trying to kill Kirian's group and unfortunately both Lindin and Peter came into sight at the same time after I inched forward following Baerin's death. Peter sent a hold person chasing after me into the distance and Lindin followed up to ensure there would be no recovery ...
For the 32nd I was intending to do a risk-free run and did that up to Davaeorn. After killing his battle horrors I decided, rather than doing lots of micro-movement to ensure I could run away upstairs before a spell reached me, to turn auto-pause on briefly. Unfortunately, at the moment I was reaching to do that Davaeorn came into sight. Taken slightly unawares I hit pause not once, but twice - wasting a crucial moment of time before pausing properly. I did then run for the exit and reached it ahead of a dire charm spell - but not with enough gap and the spell followed upstairs ...
Aiming for a lucky 33rd run things have gone well so far. I was playing fairly cautiously, which meant the main danger was at the palace. This time though 2 of the dopplegangers were horrified and 3 of the 4 remaining attacked me rather than the dukes - with the rare result that both Liia and Belt survived.
An immediate 34th attempt didn't make it too far - Davaeorn's lightning bolt proving pretty vicious to remove the 56 HPs remaining.
After quite a long break a 35th attempt didn't last long when I forgot I wasn't using autopause (again) against Landrin's spiders and got trapped by those without any armor, helmet or a melee weapon ...
An immediate 36th attempt seemed to be progressing well, until my penchant for taking risks with traps proved costly. In the bandit tent I had 74 HPs, which felt like enough to trip the trap there without any protection - but wasn't ...
For the 37th attempt I kept hold of Mulahey's boots for a while to reduce the danger from lightning traps That helped produce a pretty straight-forward run to date. I was a bit annoyed when the game crashed, just after Sarevok was killed, but fortunately the final save had already been created so I didn't need to do the fight again.
Quickly on to number 38, where I had a pretty trouble-free ride through BG1. Let's see if I can discipline myself to stay safe in BG2 this time ...
Bouncing back quickly I took number 39 through BG1 this morning. Unlike nearly all of his predecessors he's optimised for ranged attacks rather than melee - perhaps that will encourage me to avoid getting into melee range and risking cheesy maze attacks
The concentration on ranged attacks proved costly in BG2, though once again I felt it was a slightly unfair death. I decided to attack Rayic's golems, although recognising that would be risky. I only just survived the combat and was down to single figure HPs when I went outside - and died with nobody near me.
Still not wasting much time and Sarevok is down again. Things weren't risk free in BG1 - for instance there was nearly a nasty shock from Davaeorn's lightning bolt!
40 attempts seems like a nice round number and I'm feeling a bit aggrieved after two unfortunate deaths in a row - so let's see if I can make this one count ...
Regrettably this run ended with the same old story. I was quite close to getting my wizard slayer levels back when I made a mistake in Trademeet by mis-clicking on steal rather than buy when trying to get Ras (the UI for that is poor, making it an easy mistake to make). I was annoyed by that, which no doubt was the major contributor to my death in the next encounter with Mencar's group. I set 3 traps immediately downstairs and then 4 further ones a bit away - I realised that created a risk, but didn't feel like taking the bit of extra time to be safe. Amon and Pooky followed me down and the former was killed by the continuing poison from the first lot of traps. I was hidden so could have set more or gone outside, but instead just tried stealth-shooting Pooky. He followed and his stoneskins absorbed the initial damage from the remaining 4 traps and I didn't have time to hide again before he caught up and ended things with a dire charm.
Number 41 is not exactly a nice round number, but I'll see if it can break my duck anyway
There was a bit of a scare at the palace when Belt was taken to near death, but he managed to cling on - unlike Sarevok ...
I was feeling I'd had enough of this for a while, but then realised this would be the 42nd attempt - and thought that must be the answer I was looking for
Unfortunately I appeared to have the wrong question. All 6 of the dopplegangers at the palace chose to attack the dukes rather than me and that was always likely to make their survival questionable ...
After doing other challenges for a bit a 43rd attempt completed BG1. The only really worrying moment there was when Angelo did quite a bit of damage with his exploding arrows (I should have brought green scrolls of fire resistance to help with that, but had been too lazy to pick those up).
After falling at the Throne in a speed attempt with a fighter / thief I thought perhaps I could get some revenge with this. However, I wasn't concentrating well in this 44th attempt and could easily have been killed a couple of times before getting to the Palace. Luck ran out there though when Belt fell a moment before I could finish off the last of the dopplegangers attacking him.
And still not concentrating well a 45th attempt ended in the Cloakwood when I didn't initially notice an ettercap had poisoned me not once, but twice in 2 hits - meaning there was not quite enough time to reach the edge of the map to run away.
I started documenting the 46th attempt on the no-reload thread in an attempt to fool myself into taking more care. That clearly didn't work as this one also fell to poison on the same map when I pushed the limits of how far away from the map edge I could be before risking being poisoned ...
The 47th was another short-lived attempt. I was ambushed by a basilisk on the way from Firewine Bridge to High Hedge and, without autoplay on sight enabled, didn't have time to run before it gazed.
Number 48 ended at the palace. No real shame there as, particularly with the character now not having bow proficiency (to use dispelling arrows), there's probably no more than a 50% chance of success. Without use of horror the chances of success would be close to zero and on this occasion two lots of horror only scared one of the dopplegangers.
Post continues here.
I've yet to have a success in these attempts, so at the moment the expected outcome of the overall challenge will probably be viewed as "no" . Having found myself another year older yesterday I thought I would celebrate by creating a 4th class to have a go with - that's a beast master. I'll document the initial attempt with that on the Bioware forums to try and reduce the chance of making a silly mistake ...
To summarise the Bioware updates:
- the first attempt ended to spider poison in Beregost.
- the second when a magic blocking potion ran out as Davaeorn used a dire charm.
- the third I was robbed when charmed by sirines despite using a potion of clarity.
- the fourth followed the same course, with the same result (confirming that the implementation of half-elf charm resistance appears to be bugged in the EE).
- the fifth I generated a new character (human rather than half-elf). He eventually got dominated by a vampire when I forgot that improved weapon switching means having the Shield of Harmony equipped is no longer the same as having it active.
Well over 2 years since the last attempt I thought I would try again. The 6th attempt had a bad start when I forgot I was playing a ranger and fell very early on. I decided to continue on though and made it through to the Palace fight. I didn't use any charms or wands there, so it was always going to be chancy and things looked very bad when 5 of the dopplegangers chose to attack the dukes rather than me. I did pretty well to shoot 4 of them down, but the last managed to kill Belt just before I could finish him off.
Starting a 7th attempt straight away, I managed to avoid falling this time and was thus able to make use of stealth during BGEE. That's extremely powerful if used carefully, as for instance in the final battle where stealth shots successfully killed Semaj without even activating his contingencies - before a few stealth attacks finished off Sarevok.Another careless end in SoD though. I used a potion of clarity for protection against Ziatar and tried to carry that through for the Neothelid. However, that battle took a bit longer than I expected and I got dire charmed.
A few months on and an 8th attempt has gone past Sarevok. Lack of buffing caused the odd problem and I was lucky to survive when scared by Venkt. Now let's see if I can get through SoD for the first time with this character ...
And indeed I could. A quick trip was trouble-free - there are a pretty limited set of encounters you really need to buff for to be safe and I did that this time. Let's see if I can manage to do the same for BG2.
And the answer to that is no. A whole catalogue of errors resulted in me dying in the Copper Coronet to a hold person from one of the guards. A big advantage to the beast master in early BG2 is the ability to use animal summoning spells, but I had forgotten to memorize those before resting. I also didn't let the familiar out of my backpack just in case of this sort of problem. I also didn't time a stealth shot correctly, resulting in activating a guard when I didn't intend that - and then I compounded that error by moving forward again, after starting to retreat, to try and disrupt the hold spell with LMD (but was too late with that). That resulted in 2 guards attacking, which proved fatal when I would have had enough HPs to survive just 1).
After a decent run with a wizard slayer came to a disappointing end I decided to choose my next character randomly. The chances were that would result in a new class, but in fact I came up with this one again - as it's about a year since my last attempt at this though it feels pretty fresh. BG1 was completed with no particular alarms. The restriction on metal armor and weapons is not much of a constraint in that as ranged weapons are so powerful anyway and melee weapons have few immunities. I did rather less content than I often do though and realized only after the transition into SoD that one of the encounters I'd not done was the sirines and golems at the Lighthouse - and hence had missed out on raising my constitution.
The run through SoD was quick and generally smooth. The only moment of concern was against some devils on the way to find Thrix when I forgot to protect against fear as well as charm. I wasn't likely to get hit too much while running around scared, but there's always a danger in that situation of getting stuck, which could have been nasty. Once I got to Belhifet, the THAC0 advantage of Champion's Strength added to the extra damage of favored enemy meant he was shot down very quickly. The opening stages of SoA were easy enough, but I fell victim to playing after a hard day at work when my concentration wasn't up to the job. After Captain Dennis' companions had all been killed, I tried to melee him, but his use of healing potions kept him going long enough to critically injure me. He was down to 4 HPs and would have expired momentarily from the splinter damage from previous hits - but I'd projected he needed one more hit on me than he actually did to finish me off ...
Six months or so later and I've been doing a shaman run for a while, but limiting that to an hour a day - and I decided to start a 10th beast master run when I was at a loose end yesterday. Most of the run through BGEE was pretty smooth, but I did have a significant problem when I saved the game just after talking to Degrodel - then talked to him again when I restarted. That meant he grabbed the Helm of Balduran and made a run for it, while leaving more goons for me to deal with. Although caught by surprise (and already wounded from fighting through the first lot of guards), I reacted pretty quickly and was lucky enough to stun him with a dart before he could get away - and then successfully finish him off. Sarevok was no problem, but on transferring to SoD I see that I've forgotten to pick up the pantaloons, which would make Melissan a lot harder if I make it that far.Well I didn't need to worry about Melissan - the run coming to an end against Korlasz. That's the first time for quite a while I've died there. I failed to finish her off with an initial attack and, as I had no buffs, took quick damage from missiles in response. Deciding to 'play safe' I took a potion of invisibility, but that had no effect (I realized later that I was under the effect of glitterdust). I did manage to get out of sight range, but not before a final arrow was launched with me now down to just 9 HPs. I tried to take a potion of power to add some extra HPs to survive that, but my aura was still clouded from the wasted potion of invisibility ...
A month later and the beast master came up again as a random choice. My last few runs have been pretty good attempts, but this one broke that streak. Everything had seemed to go well early on, but at level 6 I tried to kill Bentan for his PfM scroll. Hitting him failed to disrupt a spell and I tried to run away - but mis-clicked and the spell took effect ...
Another couple of months and the beast master came up randomly again. I didn't really feel like playing though and paid the penalty for that against the sirines - again when I was level 6. Out of habit I sneaked in towards the first group, rather than approaching openly. That activates them and one of them started moving away, meaning I couldn't melee them all together. The sensible thing would have been to just not attack, but I tried to do so anyway - and paid the penalty by being poisoned twice.
Fourteen months later this class came up once more. This is the thirteenth run, which is deemed unlucky by some, but as the game reminds us it's really intelligence not luck that determines progress. Regrettably that was confirmed this time when a distinct lack of the former ended the run - I failed to make use of the clarity potion in my quick slot when approaching the sirines at the lighthouse area.
With the number of failed attempts nearing 50 I decided to generate a fresh character to have a go with. The resulting inquisitor has not changed my
luckintelligence though . I killed Davaeorn and then started doing a few reputation quests before going to the City. At the lighthouse I beat up some sirines and golems and recovered the constitution tome. While resting to recover HPs from a couple of golem hits a new sirine appeared. I was thinking fighting that would be reasonably safe as I was immune to charm and, if confused, had a high chance of killing it anyway. However, I had forgotten (again) that sirines in the EE also feeblemind opponents and once affected by that condition death, though prolonged, was inevitable.A second attempt with an inquisitor nearly ended early on when I was scared by Tarnesh - as a result of still trying to get used to playing without auto-pause. Not long after that there was another near-death when Peter appeared unexpectedly and succeeded with a rigid thinking cast. Since then though there were no more mistakes (despite me being a bit distracted by keeping an eye on the Brexit vote) and Sarevok has just fallen.
I couldn't resist the temptation to take risks and once more that proved costly. At Watcher's Keep I had killed all but one of the statues, but the final one was the archer and therefore the most dangerous. I tried attacking in melee, but broke off when both it and I were badly wounded. After using Bhaal healing and renewing DUHM and PFE I attacked again and swapped a bit more damage. However, a final attack (that would have probably killed it) was a critical miss and, with only 20 HPs left I decided to run again. The statue quickly switched to bow and hit for 7 HPs as I was running, but I should then have been safe. The poor pathfinding in EE then struck though when my icon hung up passing through a door. I didn't react quickly enough to that to prevent the statue getting another shot in - and then it was close enough that it got a final (in both senses of the word) shot in during the slight delay while the area transition activated to leave WK.
A third attempt didn't last long. I was hiding behind some rocks with Korax after contacting Kirian's group. Lindin was successfully pulled out alone and was quickly paralyzed. I then tried doing the same with Baerin, but Peter got enough of a sight to cast a rigid thinking. That shouldn't have been too much of a problem as Korax immediately paralysed Baerin as well. However, despite the fact Baerin was standing right next to me (and not on a corner) he'd apparently disappeared into the rocks and I couldn't see him. Thus a confused attack was made on Korax rather than Baerin ...
Number four has just gone past Sarevok - let's see if I can push this one on rather further ...
Another failed attempt, though this time the result of AI cheese. In the Underdark I was on the way to Phaere and cautiously sprung the N'ashtar ambush on the way. The only real danger in that was maze, so I used true seeing to ensure the mage couldn't sneak up on me and retreated gradually away while throwing Azuredge. After retreating into the city I carefully confirmed that N'ashtar was still well away out of touch range as he came through after me. Unfortunately it was so clear that was the case that I didn't react quite quickly enough when he cast maze anyway (though I am aware that the EE sometimes does funny things with area transitions, so I should really have been anticipating that possibility)! I tried switching weapons to Carsomyr and using a potion of magic protection, but the screenshot suggests the maze projectile had arrived a moment before I did that ...
After a couple of nights with little sleep I didn't feel up to the challenge of trying another wizard slayer attempt and, two years after my last attempt at this class, I started another inquisitor run. However, I wasn't really up to any sort of play and died pretty early on in a missile duel with Malkax .
Six months on I had another go. I still wasn't really in the mood for it though and fairly early on suffered when unable to remember whether 5 or 6 reputation would cause a paladin to fall - I found the hard way it was 6. I persevered as far as Davaeorn, but was charmed there when I decided to risk attacking him without any protection.
Another 6 months and a 7th attempt is underway. For the last few attempts I've been selecting classes to attempt at random, but this time I rolled for a repeat attempt rather than a new class. Generally I've taken slightly fewer risks in recent attempts and that was the case here. I did though make a major mistake at the Palace when moving forward too quickly after casting dispel magic and getting caught in the area of effect. Fortunately 2 of the dopplegangers attacked me, giving time to kill the others before they could finish off Belt.
I didn't get around to SoD for about a week, but have run through that this morning. There were no major problems and I used multiple champion's strength scrolls (their THAC0 bonus stacks) for the first time in order to tear Belhifet apart very rapidly.
I made very slow progress (by my standards anyway) through BG2, but did eventually get to Melissan - and once more died to a combination of carelessness and the game cheating. Against her second incarnation I had her low on HPs and decided to use GWWs to finish her off. After a couple of those I thought she should be dead and, checking her HPs, confirmed she was at 1 HP - but her final dialogue refused to trigger. In the meantime my HPs were being eroded away due to not bothering too much about attacking glabrezus and damage from the earthquakes she was spamming when she was supposed to be getting on her bike. Finally she did make a move and I thought I was safe, but lack of attention meant that the continuing earthquake damage finished me off ...
Three months later a random selection brought up the inquisitor once more - but the dreadful run I've been on for the last couple of weeks continued. In the Cloakwood I wasn't quite careful enough getting past the web trap to activate the last ettercap. I did break free, but by that time had been poisoned a couple of times and had no green scroll to cure that.
I'm still plugging away at this - and still waiting for a first success (after 75 attempts as I write this) ...
Recently I've been trying with a wild mage. That can potentially be done with pretty low risk by:
- avoiding spell casting in BG1 (where items are plentiful and relatively very powerful to your own spells anyway).
- avoiding casting spells in sight of enemies in SoA (summons can sort out all necessary encounters there).
- keeping chaos shield up whenever casting in ToB (to prevent the no-save hold surge) and always having a back-up plan to deal with the inevitable spell failures.
My first 5 attempts with that failed to get out of BG1 - due to:
- one fatal archer ambush on the first area transition.
- twice dying to not allowing for the fact that constitution changes alter HPs differently in EE to vanilla, making it very easy to die when using the violet potion (my first death to that effect I felt therefore was very forgivable, even if the second wasn't ).
- twice failing to keep Belt alive at the Palace (this is considerably harder in EE than BGT).
My sixth attempt was a decent one and got to the Throne - but failed pretty miserably there when my intended strategy of lowering the magic resistance of Mel's first incarnation failed and I was left with no quick way of killing her (and couldn't then deal with the infinite summons she produces). That attempt was documented on the no-reload thread here on the Beamdog forums.
A seventh attempt again failed when Belt couldn't kill the dopplegangers at the palace, but an eighth one was looking promising when I went to tackle Abazigal. This time I felt I would be better prepared to meet Mel, but the possibility of glory was snuffed out when a wild surge resulted in me imprisoning myself!
A ninth attempt after a break for a while made comfortable progress to the Palace, but a bit of bad luck / bad judgement was costly there. All but one of the dopplegangers were dead and the last one's morale broke and started running. I attacked with my sling, which proved costly when it ran up the stairs behind Sarevok before coming down again. As it reached the bottom I killed it with a critical hit, while Belt was right next to me - thus meaning I had no opportunity to drag him away from Sarevok before talking. Sarevok would have finished Belt off in, at most, a couple of hits so I put myself in the front line to distract him - with the aim of trying to get him to follow just out of his melee range. That's very difficult to do, however, as with any significant gap there's the chance he will switch targets and his melee range with a 2-handed sword is also long. On this occasion I failed - thinking I had moved just out of his range, but his sword licked out to take off my head ...
And an immediate 10th attempt was another to end in the Cloakwood, though rather unfairly. When ambushed by 3 giant spiders I tried dodging past the one at the top (as I've done many hundreds of times before) only for the icon to get stuck. That's a bit of a feature of the EE, that the pathfinding can be really poor at moving past other icons, but normally you can unstick by moving directly away. Unfortunately, I was slightly slow in realising that there was a problem and by the time I tried doing that, one of the other spiders had moved up so close that I couldn't move directly away and the game persistently refused to allow me to move to either side. At that stage I was then poisoned and didn't have a green scroll to cure that (and don't allow the use of antidotes). I used a wand scorcher to kill one of the spiders, but it didn't die until the second round of damage and the delay meant I died just before reaching the safety of the map edge.
Trying once more the same morning and this time I've at least got past Sarevok in the 11th attempt. At the palace all the dopplegangers were confused by chaos (my only spell of the run to date other than find familiar and a couple of friends), but still managed to kill Liia and badly wound Belt. Sarevok was nearly dead when Angelo and Tazok entered the combat and it was the latter's exploding arrows that actually finished off Sarevok - hence I missed the screenshot initially and had to take that from the final save.I had done most of the available work prior to Spellhold and already had my first HLA when a slight lapse in concentration proved costly in the Planar Sphere. After you've got decent HPs with a wild mage the most dangerous surge is the no-save hold. You can avoid that by having chaos shield up at all times while casting and always ensuring you cast chaos shield out of combat. In this case I forgot to put chaos shield up while in the previous area and tried to summon a planetar in the engine room. There was nothing visible when I was held, but unfortunately the golems decided to explore. I should also have had an invisible when helpless contingency, which would have saved me, but must have forgotten to renew that at some point ...
Seeing it was more than 18 months since I tried this wild mage I started a 12th run. That hit problems immediately though, when I forgot I wasn't playing LoB. I attacked Xzar and Montaron with my familiar and killed the former before he could cast. After Montaron had already hit the familiar once though I suddenly realized how vulnerable it was in this game and pressed pause - just in time to freeze the action as the familiar died. Normally the loss of HPs from that would kill me as well, but level 1 protection kicked in to save me. I didn't take full advantage of that escape though. I had hit the level cap and was on my way to the Bandit Camp when I nodded off for a few seconds - coming back to awareness just in time to see the game over screen pop up.
I started another run straight away and, so far, it's been a lucky 13th. Typically I hardly cast spells at all in BG1, but this time did quite a bit of casting once I hit the level cap. However, I never got any particularly nasty surges from that - this one could have been annoying earlier on, but by this point I'd already invested virtually all my money. In earlier runs with the wild mage I've gone straight from BG1 to BG2. I think that was because this character was generated before I'd started playing SoD. However, as it was created after SoD was released I should really be including SoD as well - so there's some more hard work to do before the wild mage has the chance to get to Athkatla.
I continued casting spells in SoD without taking full care, but my luck ran out there. My basic spell save was down to 1 to provide protection against many dangerous surges, but that was no help against a no-save hold. There was only one bugbear just on the fringes of sight, so stoneskin would have saved me from death in that situation in BG1, but in SoD it called a couple of friends over to help it beat me up.
After a further month a 14th run is under way. Up until getting to level 9 the only spell cast was find familiar, with most killing during that period being with my trusty sling. A few more spells were used towards the end though, along with increased item use. As usual though plenty of resources are being carried forward into SoD.
Another mean ending - this time during the assault on the Coalition Camp. I had nearly died trying to get into the Underground River earlier when not realizing a mage had spell turning on and would reflect a wand scorcher. That would have been my fault, but at the Camp I was given no chance. The first 2 assaults were dealt with without problems and the third should have been the same with the enemies all wounded by a fireball and facing a full set of summons in addition to the warmages and me. One of them though decided to run straight through everyone (he wasn't affected by any spell) and trigger the assault by the final group just before I could finish him off.
A few months later and there was plenty more sling action as the wild mage made her way through to Baldur's Gate, before falling to one of the Umberlee priestesses - that run was summarized on the no-reload thread.
A 16th attempt was pretty similar. All the hard work had been done in getting to Baldur's Gate, but I took a chance in committing to a missile exchange with Lothander after he was out of spells - and lost out to a critical.
Another month later and for a 17th attempt I used items a bit more than the last couple of runs, though still relatively sparingly. Sarevok is down with just a couple of wild surges to date - though one of those cost me 20k gold.
For the first time with a wild mage I've taken down Belhifet (the character was originally rolled prior to SoD, so I wasn't doing that in early runs). There was again plenty of item use with stoneskin scrolls proving handy in the Coalition Camp and restoration scrolls keeping Caelar going against Belhifet.A momentary loss of concentration proved costly after some good play in getting up to level 16. I was clearing the Graveyard tombs and attacked the one with 2 shadow fiends in. I was concentrating on killing one of them with MMMs and didn't notice the other sneaking out of the shadow of the doorway to paralyze me ...
A further month and an 18th attempt is underway. I couldn't resist taking some unnecessary risks to keep the adrenalin flowing, e.g. gambling on not running the wrong way after the last of the Red Wizards chucked a horror as he died, but got away with it and Sarevok is down.
Another failure at Boareskyr Bridge as I failed to kill the mage quickly enough to prevent him summoning elemental supporters and failed to kill those quickly enough to prevent them detonating the barrels. Part of the problem was that in v2.5 the barrels are subject to both area damage and melee attacks - ruling out things like skull traps or confusion. It may be though that they're immune to poison, so cloudkill would be a potential tactic next time along with the ring of energy to try and disrupt the mage's spells (that strikes though mirror images and minor globe).
A couple more months and my 19th attempt has once more defeated Sarevok. As usual I essentially didn't cast spells until up close to the XP cap. I had a few wild surges thereafter, but nothing nasty.
I've got through SoD again as well. Belhifet's refusal to attack me and the relatively small amount of damage I could do him made the final fight difficult and I was down to my last couple of restoration scrolls for Caelar when the end came. Let's hope I can make some better progress in BG2 this time.
A decent attempt annoyingly came to an end against the Demon Knights in the Underdark. The danger of mazing or imprisoning yourself when using 8th and 9th level spells meant I had been rationing those and decided to kill the demon knights using missiles. I was thinking that my spell save was good enough to avoid problems, but while that was a safe -3 while using the Staff of the Magi, it was only -1 with the sling equipped - which proved to be not good enough.
A 20th attempt was done pretty safely up until encountering the Neothelid. That stunned me with an ego whip effect - I need to double-check for future reference what the saving throw is against that. The run was summarized on the no-reload thread.
Six months later and I got caught out by my penchant for taking risks with traps. At level 8 I decided to go through the charm trap in the flesh golem cave without taking any precautions - and the 2% chance of getting caught out by that triggered ...
Starting again almost immediately I was much more cautious for most of the run through BG1. The only mage spell I cast directly was find familiar, but I did have a couple of surges late on when using scrolls and DUHM. Sarevok was cheesed by just running through the lightning trap multiple times.
A bit of cheese and lack of caution resulted in an early end to SoD though. I put stoneskin on before resting to take on the Neothelid, but one of the cutscenes triggered when resting - meaning that spell buffs didn't continue as normal. I did notice that, but decided to just try the fight anyway. I got the Neothelid to near death while taking minimal damage, but it then found a 46 damage critical to turn the fight on its head ...
A couple of months later and a 23rd attempt is underway. As usual there was very limited use of my own spells and I haven't had a single wild surge so far. I did though take a slight risk of spoiling that record by deciding to go for extra style points by finishing Sarevok off with a Bhaal LMD (that still has a risk of a surge as it mimics the spell).Edit: I tried to use Bhaal horror at the start of the SoD dungeon and summoned a nabassu instead - good job that didn't happen at the coronation where I did the same thing .
There was a disappointing end to this run at the crusader invasion of the camp. I hadn't bothered renewing stoneskin prior to the final encounter, which probably proved costly. I was still shocked though to apparently go from 73 HPs to zero in a single hit. There was no obvious attacker either on the screen or the text, but my guess is that Swift Rabbit got a critical backstab on me.
There was more pain in a 24th attempt a couple of weeks later. After the usual sling-fest in BG1 I was working through SoD without apparent trouble. At Boareskyre Bridge I used the Ring of Energy to attack the mage. That's been a very reliable tactic for me and a few applications of that saw the mage dead without apparently completing a spell. I was thus shocked to find a fiery portal open after the mage was down. Defeating the stream of creatures coming through that quickly enough to stop them damaging the barrels is a tall order. A cloudkill helped keep mephits in order and I went through about a dozen of those, 3 elementals and 4 or 5 lesser elementals - but it still wasn't enough to save the bridge .
Another couple of weeks and a 25th attempt failed at the Palace. As so often I left that largely up to chance and things were looking dodgy with Liia dead and Belt badly injured before a single doppleganger had died. I intervened by using a wand scorcher and that, together with wand summons rapidly downed opponents to leave only one doppleganger active - when I suddenly died. I suspect what must have happened is that Belt had taken damage from the scorcher and, even though he was still definitely not shown as hostile, reacted by unleashing an insta-kill.
Two more months and I've once more completed BGEE. As usual I didn't use spells until my saving throws were as good as possible, but did cast quite a few after that - surprisingly only suffering a single surge as a result.
Well, that was very annoying. I had a pretty smooth passage through SoD to find Belhifet and tried my normal tactic there of using Caelar to kill him. Unfortunately one of my attempted restorations on her surged (unfair both from the point of view of using a scroll and casting a divine spell) and as I don't allow Caelar to be controlled in that fight she was cut down before I could try again. I hadn't brought any Otiluke's scrolls, which meant using fire shield to wear down Belhifet was much more difficult. However, by using potions of power and restoring HPs I made decent progess and had him down to about 15 HPs while I still had plenty of resources. Trying to restore my HPs for what would probably have been the final time though, the delay been using the scroll and the spell actually casting proved costly. I still had about 40 HPs, so could survive a standard hit from Belhifet and quite possibly another hit from one of the other demons attacking. However, I failed to survive when Belhifet pulled a critical out of the bag.
A few months later and a 27th run had seen mainly sling work take me to level 6. At the Lighthouse though I decided to use Algernon's Cloak to put a sirine on my side. That worked for the first group, but for the second I didn't notice the charmed sirine going invisible and was targeted by poison arrows by its companion ...
Something over a year later this class came up again as a random selection. As usual most of the work was done with my trusty sling, with items being used a bit later on and then my own spells risked in the later battles - with Sarevok, for instance, suffering from magic missiles. Gameplay was generally a bit more risky in SoD, but I again got away with it. The nastiest moment was in the final fight against Belhifet. I was trying to do him a bit of damage by using stoneskins and blue fireshield, but got a wild surge when trying to renew stoneskins using a scroll - a momentary delay in me recognising that resulted in me being taken down to 9 HPs before I could retreat and take a potion of regeneration. Soon after that Belhifet fell.Groan. I was doing plenty of spell casting in BG2EE and a surge eventually got me. I was trying to knock open a container in one of the Graveyard tombs and generated a lightning bolt with a surge that was bouncing directly through me. I actually reacted pretty quickly to pause the game after only being hit twice, but had no potions in my container that could help protect against further damage and couldn't move out of the way in time to avoid another hit ...
Another six months and I decided to try this again after noticing someone else trying a solo wild mage on the no-reload thread. As usual I used pretty much only my sling up to level 6. Thereafter I cast lots of spells without suffering any particularly nasty surges, with some use of items in the end game where Sarevok was shot down. And SoD is complete as well. I was still casting plenty of spells and was again lucky with the surges. I think there were 3 of those in the final battle with Belhifet when I was trying to cast stoneskin or fire shield from scrolls, but none proved fatal and Belhifet eventually killed himself when battering the fire shield. On loading up SoA, it appears that I forgot to take the pantaloons out of my bag of holding. That's less serious with a mage than some characters, but still a significant pain.
Oh dear, what a way to go. I'd just cleared, as I thought, the last of the enemies from Spellhold and was on my way to get some boots made prior to moving on. I had a sneeze coming though and didn't watch the screen for a few seconds - which was just long enough for the group of werewolves which sometimes regenerates close to the boot machine to kill me .
A month later and a 30th attempt failed relatively early in BG2EE. I'd essentially abandoned caution when casting spells and paid for that by being petrified. The run was reported in the no-reload thread.
I started a new run immediately, but this time decided to avoid use of any spells that could cause a surge. I often minimise the use of spells in BGEE, but this run that's been taken to the extreme with no familiar and no use of spells like knock to gain resources or friends to improve shop prices. There are plenty of resources in the game anyway though and wands can generally solve problems pretty easily. Most enemies though were just shot down anyway - as with Sarevok.I didn't last too long in SoD though. I was at the old temple in the Forest of Wyrms cleaning up guards prior to killing Ziatar. With just a couple of them left I saw from the text that one was lining me up for a backstab. You can often avoid those by moving just as the attack starts and before it connects, but I didn't want to move and activate the other guard and decided to allow the attack. Unfortunately it was a critical hit and did just enough damage to kill me ...
Nine months later and a 32nd attempt was a poor one. At the basilisk area Korax cleared most of the basilisks without trouble, but got tagged by a couple of acid arrows from Mutamin. I wasn't paying sufficient attention to how those were affecting his HPs and when he died I was still within sight of the greater basilisk - who made no mistake with his gaze attack.
Another 9 months and a bit of carelessness proved costly at the palace. I realised before the fight I'd forgotten to get a chaos scroll, but with hasted summons available the odds seemed pretty good anyway. However, all the dopplegangers attacked the dukes and Liia was dead and Belt at near death in less than 2 rounds. Casting invisibility on Belt got the dopplegangers to disperse and 2 Bhaal heals on him kept him going long enough to take the dopplegangers down to 2 - one of which was not attacking him. Unfortunately the other found a critical before I could finish it off ...
I was trying to update my lengthy post above detailing failures made to date with a fighter to thief dual, but it appears I've hit some sort of limit on post length with that. I suppose that's a signal that I really shouldn't still be failing after so long The original post includes 48 failures, with the fight at the palace being a particular problem. That encounter was a breeze though in the current 49th attempt - the first Bhaal horror sent 2 dopplegangers running and 2 of the remainder attacked me. The final two were hit by dispelling arrows before a second horror sent another doppleganger running. Moving on to the palace Angelo did some damage with his arrows, but ultimately Sarevok was left alone and was finished off in an undignified fashion by a measly Bhaal LMD. Another error resulted in death just a few thousand XP before dualling at level 13. Fighting Mekrath's umber hulks I had used horror to split off a couple and was trying to kill them. I was aware of the danger of the horror ending and being confused (it's irritating that the umber hulks are able to use that ability the same instant they recover). I should therefore not have been trying to attack in close quarters at all (attacking with Lilarcor would not have been a good option as automatic movement would have been likely to bring all the remaining umber hulks into action). Even with lots of pausing I didn't get the chance to react to the recovered hulk's confusion and that would have been very likely to be fatal with just the single umber hulk attacking - but the noise of battle drew a couple more to join in as well to make sure my agony was cut short.
A 50th attempt (recorded on the no-reload thread) ended when I hadn't appreciated that Rayic's casting was not properly shut down and got disintegrated.
I wasn't concentrating properly for number 51 and went down to an old favourite - getting trapped by the web near the ettercaps that tends to only trigger as you come in sight of the final ettercap.
I played the 52nd pretty well, but once more failed to get over the tough hurdle at the palace. My two horrors only scared one of the dopplegangers and even though a couple of them attacked me, the other 3 were extremely lucky against Belt - killing both him and Liia before the end of the second round of combat (with 2 of those having been dispelled in the first round as well).
A 53rd attempt was also pretty well played in BG1, but once more I thought was going to fail at the palace - it didn't though . My first horror there failed to scare any dopplegangers, which looked bad, but luckily 3 of the dopplegangers attacked me. I took a lot of damage from them as a result of having a bow equipped in order to dispel those attacking the dukes and was grateful when a second horror sent a couple of dopplegangers running. The second of the 2 dopplegangers attacking Belt just managed to finish him off, but I successfully killed the one attacking Liia - keeping her alive though at near death. There then came a tense period of chasing down the 2 scared dopplegangers, needing to finish them off before they recovered and sent a killing swipe Liia's way - and eventually that was successful. There were no problems with Sarevok, so BG2 beckons once more ...And on to ToB ...
Most of the time in SoA I was concentrating fairly hard. The main exception was a fight with Firkraag, who I took on at relatively low level. I was affected by dragon fear at one point and was very lucky that my running kept me out of his sight nearly all the time and he didn't try to melee me. Of the three elements of the trilogy (I haven't done SoD) ToB should be the easiest with this character, so I really should have a good chance of breaking my duck now . And finally I've put my first bit of gold on the leader board (the 53rd attempt with this character, but the 99th counting all attempts to date) . Most of ToB seemed pretty straight-forward, but I really struggled with Mel's first incarnation. Her earthquake spell was doing regular damage and her non-missile missiles (by-passing the reflection shield) hurt whenever I let her get too close. The Death Tyrants prevented me using any magic (including items such as potions) and the slayer shadows were quick and thus made it very difficult to both keep out of melee with them and out of Mel's missile range. In the end I had to resort to using my first arcane scrolls of the run (protection from magic weapons). Once up close with Mel a combination of the Answerer (to make her easier to hit), the Soul Reaver (to make it harder for her to hit) and Blackrazor (to get some free healing) was enough to beat her down. Deciding I had pushed my luck enough in this run, Mel's remaining incarnations were all trapped to death on arrival .
Afterthoughts
Progressing with this class is not as hard as it might appear from the number of attempts! However, using the wizard slayer as the starting class does severely constrain possible tactics. With green scrolls and Spider's Bane offering the only magic protection in BG1 it's unlikely a run would be successful unless you're prepared to run away from combats - doing that makes perfect sense to me, but I know some people don't like that tactic. Having horror as a Bhaal power is also extremely important. That makes many combats much easier and a solo wizard slayer would need to be very lucky to keep the dukes alive at the battle for the palace without using horror.
In BG2 once you've dualled to thief progress is far easier - thief tactics of backstabs, stealth shots and traps are not affected much by the continuing restrictions of your wizard slayer heritage and there are far more items available which provide immunities against common status effects, e.g. Shield of Harmony for charm, confusion and hold, Arbane for stun and Dragon Slayer for fear.
In ToB things get pretty easy so long as you take a bit of care. Spike traps in particular can bring down the toughest enemies. The wizard slayer levels make it easy to get magic resistance over 100% without the possibility of protections being dispelled and (at least if you've dualled at level 13) your fighting abilities are also sufficient for all tasks. The occasional use of Vhailor's Helm for a simmy and letting that take rat shape is a good way to hold the stronger fighting enemies in place while you smack them down.
Trying out another class I've had a number of goes with a shaman recently. I hadn't previously played with one of those at all, so the early attempts have had some painful learning experiences as well as my usual problems with (not) avoiding silly mistakes. Although I haven't got far enough to get a feel for how the class would perform in ToB the class seems pretty strong to me and completing SoA should be pretty easy in principle.
I've recorded the first 9 runs on the no-reload thread (final post to date is here and has links to earlier posts). In summary runs ended as follows:
1 - shot down by Baerin while experimenting with dancing to summon spirits.
2 - failed to pause game while doing something else on the computer and returned to find character confused by Kysus and about to die to Drasus.
3 - was going well when a bug auto-killed me in Candlekeep and I decided not to reload.
4 - tried to get rid of nymph domination spells in the palace, but failed to realise that being dominated by your own summons is treated as game over in EE.
5 - mis-clicked trying to run away from Bentan and got charmed.
6 - went back to seek revenge on Bentan and failed miserably!
7 - took a chance at the Bandit Camp and suffered one too many acid arrows from Venkt.
8 - finally got into BG2 and was finding that pretty easy. Once I got 7th level spells I saw one called Ether Gate and cast that on myself to see what it did - it provides a maze effect!
9 - playing quickly got through to BG2 again, but wasn't paying enough attention and was fatally poisoned by a phase spider early on.
It's nearly 18 months since I tried the shaman, but I just had another go. After taking a while to remember a few tricks I started making good progress before getting tripped up at the Bandit Camp - Venkt landing a horror, which he started casting outside the tent, before following me inside, following me back outside and finally completing the spell.
And an 11th attempt failed almost immediately afterwards. I got distracted and ran into Neera unexpectedly in Beregost and was shot down by the Thayan wizard. Must try harder!
Attempt 12 has been better so far and I've just got past Sarevok. I'm not hopeful of getting too much further as I've still been less than halfway through SoD, but it would be nice if I could push on a bit further than I've been in that to date. I've got the advantages of having carried quite a bit of resources in and also having done rather more than required in BG1 - meaning I've got just enough XP to level up immediately in SoD.
Unfortunately I failed to beat my previous target. After doing the dungeon easily enough I did all the quests in the opening area, including fairly laboriously clearing all the undead from the mines - except the lich. I then used a PfU scroll to try and kill him, but that didn't go well. I did that once before without any problem, but this time the lich immediately cast remove magic without me noticing and followed that up with PW:stun. The duration on that would only have been 1d4 rounds, so it wasn't necessarily an automatic death sentence. However, a malison was followed by ADHW and topped off with PW:kill before I could recover.
After a 6 month break a 13th attempt proved short-lived when I was too slow retreating from a carrion crawler. An immediate 14th wasn't too much better. I got up to level 7 that time before trying to cast a Writhing Fog on some ghasts in Durlag's Tower basement and just catching Bayard in it. I tried to run, but the ghasts were blocking the stairs and Bayard then cast a horror which proved fatal. Starting again straight away the 15th also ended early - trying to kill a charmed sirine from Beregost temple I got a critical miss. It took a couple of seconds to go hostile and start casting a charm - giving me time to have run away. However, I chose to try and kill it - but critically missed for a second time!
A 16th attempt was marginally better - getting through to SoD before another mistake saw me forget that immunities offered by a shield don't operate if you swap a sling for a bow. That run was documented on the no-reload thread.
After a while doing other things a 17th attempt has completed BG1. Let's see if I can get further in SoD this time.
Well I got further, but not far enough. At the Coalition Camp I was expecting to beat off an attack by trolls without problems and in fact I was comfortably winning the battle - but one of the enemy had slipped past me and the wimpish guards decided the battle was lost. I've got very little experience of this fight and obviously will have to be more careful in future.
Six months after the previous attempt at this I had another go. That was immediately after losing a mage run a bit cheesily to a scripted kill by Irenicus and I wasn't being careful enough. I'd already had to save against a dire charm from Sil when going into the golem cave. While shooting the second of those, for some reason it decided to run away rather than attack me and I followed it just too far - activating the charm trap ...
A couple more months and I've started a 19th attempt. That's not been particularly clean so far and I wasted a lot of money in BG1, but have at least made it into SoD.
Another run fails in the process of learning a bit more, this time about the Neothelid. I was wary of domination type abilities and had used a potion of clarity against it. I hadn't realized though that an ability called "control body" was actually hold person ...
Another month later and number 20 is under way. That feels significantly more like hard work after doing a couple of runs with a dwarven defender, but I've at least managed to get past Sarevok.
Once more though I failed to get through SoD. I was fighting through the demons on the way to Belhifet when I got caught out (not for the first time) by my inability to remember that some of them can use hold person as well as charm. I had actually used a potion of magic shielding just before entering the demon portal, but that seemed to disappear as a result of the cut-scene and I'd only replaced it by a potion of clarity.
A few more months and I tried once more, though with disappointing results. I'd just killed Nimbul and nipped into the inn to find Neira. I was too slow to dodge out of the way of her opening rigid thinking though and that took effect as I arrived outside - with a sling equipped and half a dozen guards waiting for me ...
A 22nd attempt got past Sarevok, but crashed on entry to SoD. I see from this thread that it appears v2.5 crashes in SoD if you've used an earlier save, so will need to roll up all new starting characters in order to progress further .
Number 23 had finished pretty much everything prior to returning to Candlekeep, but I found myself taking increasing risks in the process. At the Iron Throne that finally cost me when I deliberately took a chance on resisting a horror spell - and didn't do so.
Another risk failed to pay off when I remained on the map area after Peter cast a hold person at me from out of sight. I was a long way away from Lindin, but 4 or 5 rounds later he tracked me down ...
A few weeks later and a 25th attempt has gone past Sarevok without too many alarms.
Once more I failed in SoD though. At Boareskyr Bridge my nymphs confused the mage, but that didn't stop him casting - however, his spell was disrupted by a blast from the ring of energy. A couple of rounds later though the bridge exploded. I don't know why, but my guess is that confused guards attacked the exploding barrels - so that's another tactic to avoid in future ...
Six weeks or so later and I'm trying again. I flirted with death a couple of times when going through lightning traps without any protection, but survived to see off Sarevok. The need to buff saving throws regularly makes SoD more of a pain for me, but let's see if I can get through it this time ...
Again the answer is no and again I suffered from not buffing. I was trying to kill the Neothelid without using a PfP scroll (though they are plentiful). Spirit summons were reasonably effective against it when they had the chance and did get it to near death. However, it was constantly ducking back underground, so that combat took a while and the potion of stone form used to boost saving throws at the start of the combat ran out, allowing a hold effect to bite ...
A 27th attempt got through BGEE and, finally, made it through SoD as well. I took a fair number of risks in BGEE, but was more cautious in SoD and had a relatively uneventful run through there this time. I've got no experience of higher level shamans, but in principle there should be no problem with SoA - though that doesn't mean there won't be in practice of course ...
And the problem didn't take long to arise . After emerging from the dungeon I decided to see how a shaman would get on against the cowled wizards. The first group died easily enough, but I misjudged how many spells left the last wizard of the second group had and then failed to stay out of his sight when I decided it was time to run ...
No. 28 was another to fail in SoD when being dire charmed by a trap just after the Neothelid. I think what happened was that I was about to use a potion of clarity as a buff for the Neothelid, before deciding I should make use of one of the scrolls of chaotic commands I'd bought instead - but then forgot to do that. That means I was probably lucky not to get charmed by the Neothelid, but luck can only take you so far.
A couple of months later for the shaman (and after a few weeks break from BG generally) I've started a 29th attempt and completed BGEE. I forgot to pick up the violet potion and hence couldn't get the strength tome - that's a relatively minor issue for a half-orc with 19 strength already though. Let's see if I can actually get around to buffing in SoD this time ...
Well, some buffing - but not enough. In the Belhifet fight I wasn't too far from victory when I noticed my oil of speed had run out. I took that and immediately noticed that potion of magic shielding had also expired. Unfortunately a cornugon had also noticed that and immediately took advantage with a dire charm while my aura was clouded ...
Another month and a 30th attempt didn't get that far. A fairly typical end with no buffing done to take on the sirines at the lighthouse. One of them ignored damage from a Writhing Fog to cast a dire charm ...
Three more months and number 31 has at least got past BG1. I did forget to pick up the violet potion and hence couldn't get the strength tome, but that's not as great a problem for half-orcs who already have 19 strength. There was a satisfying finish with a relatively rare successful hold on Sarevok. There was another disappointing end at Boareskyr Bridge though. The safest way I know to do that is to use the Ring of Energy - that reliably disrupts the mage's spells. This time though I decided to use nymphs along with dispelling arrows. The mage was confused and later dispelled, but that didn't prevent him continuing to cast his spell creating the fire rift. I've never fully understood how that works. I have successfully prevented the creatures from destroying the bridge several times, but I think they must do automatic damage to it over time - so need to be killed very quickly. Despite getting through them pretty quickly this time that proved to be not good enough and the bridge exploded, taking me with it.
Another month and a 32nd attempt has also seen off Sarevok. The only slight concern was when I didn't monitor an attack from Drasus properly and was taken down to 9 HPs before realizing the danger.
Belhifet is also history. Fighting his demons earlier on I think I had to save at least once against charm after I let a potion run out, but generally the run through SoD was trouble-free. Let's see if I can actually make decent progress in BG2 this time ...
Once again the answer was no. I played pretty safely for a while, making a fair amount of use of summons. Against Mekrath though, his death spell got rid of my fire elementals. A succession of nymphs appeared to have depleted all his spells and I spotted him invisibly before dancing to produce some spirit summons. After a few rounds of him attacking them I moved into his sight so that the spirits could attack back - and he immediately produced a finger of death ...
I started a 33rd attempt almost immediately and a few hours later am once more past Sarevok. There were no particularly close shaves, but I did again forget to pick up the violet potion - meaning I couldn't get the strength tome.
Still on the same day and I've finished SoD once more. Hopefully this time I can do rather better in BG2 ...
Well, I did a bit better - but still found a way to die in SoA. I was just short of getting HLAs and had already bought everything of possible benefit when starting the Unseeing Eye quest. The trap on the bridge just before the beholders is a prismatic spray and I wasn't sure whether Shield of the Archons would protect against that, but tried it anyway - and succumbed to the 10% chance of death when hit by a petrification ray.
A 34th attempt was looking promising as that was cruising through SoA, having picked up a number of HLAs this time. In the Twisted Rune I got PfU dispelled by Vaxall just before it died in a Fire Storm. After apparently not being targeted with domination by Shyressa after a number of rounds, I opted to try using spirit summons against her without specific charm protection (though I did have chaotic commands available) - and paid the price for that. There was no apparent targeting there, so it may be she uses an aura effect, rather than a targeted domination. The run was documented here.
Another month later (and a couple of weeks without playing BG at all) I'm trying again. BGEE and SoD didn't pose too many problems, so let's see if I can maintain concentration in SoA this time ...
Sigh - it would appear not. This time I didn't even get out of the dungeon . I thought I was being careful in the mephit portal room when I sent a nymph well into the room with an insect plague following it, while I and 2 further nymphs stayed by the door. I've noticed before that color spray extends further than would be expected according to the spell description though and that once more proved to be the case as all 3 nymphs and myself collapsed. 3 mephits attacked at once and, even though they killed the nymphs first, the color spray lasted just long enough for them to finish me off as well.
A further month and a 36th attempt was progressing without problems until I travelled to an area north of the basilisks without paying full attention. A basilisk ambush occurred and a gaze attack was on the way before I registered what was happening ...
A couple more months and number 37 has gone past Sarevok. I've been doing a fair bit of playing around with this run so far and got in trouble a few times in BG1 when trying to use spirit summons to win fights where they were not really a suitable tactic. I toyed with the idea of killing Sarevok just with spirits, but after a bit decided that was going to take just too long - and shot him down as usual instead. It took me quite a long time to get around to playing in SoD, but once I started it didn't take long. I nearly failed at Boareskyr Bridge when the mage somehow managed to avoid 3 dispelling arrows, when I was buffed up, and opened a fire portal. I had 5 nymphs already summoned which helped occupy the summons, but I was still lucky that the mephits didn't do quite enough damage to destroy the barrels. On the downside I found when I went to fish the pantaloons out of my bag in the epilogue that they weren't there - so I must have forgotten them in BG1. That could be a problem in the unlikely event I get to Mel.
I didn't need to worry about Mel. Towards the end of SoA, I was becoming conscious of the shaman's slight lack of ability to deal damage - particularly against things with magic resistance. I was exploring a couple of different things against the illithid in the temple sewers that might have helped with that, but got a bit too cute when trying to run past one of them and got my brains sucked out.
Trying again almost immediately, everything went smoothly up to the Iron Throne. There though, I stayed too close to a nymph acting as a target for enemies following me between floors and was affected by a horror cast at it.#
Four months later and I rolled for which character to try next after successfully completing the challenge with a berserker. I would have liked almost any other character than a shaman or druid, to give me a decent chance of getting 2 runs in a row. As it is I'm still unsure how realistic the chances of a shaman are against Mel. However, I'll try to concentrate and get far enough to find out. At least in this 39th attempt BGEE is done, without any major problems.
SoD was also proceeding smoothly - until I got to Belhifet. I was again a victim there of a mysterious loss of buffs after the opening cut scene. The magic shielding potion I'd taken only a few rounds before disappeared and I was immediately affected by fear. By the time I recovered from that Caelar was dead and my stoneskins eroded. Even so, I should have won comfortably, but wasn't thinking straight as a result of my annoyance at what had happened. I had the battle tankard, so could have used greater restoration to heal myself without penalty. Instead though I tried just using potions of power to keep HPs up while tanking Belhifet. That had a pretty good chance of success I think, but at near death himself, Belhifet put together a string of high attack rolls and finished me off before succumbing himself.
A couple of months later and I was in the mood for something a bit more sophisticated after a few attempts at a wizard slayer - hence this 40th attempt. The greater options provides more temptation to muck around and I was affected by horror at the Iron Throne as a result - only just surviving there. Eventually though Sarevok fell to open up SoD. I continued being a bit careless at the start of SoD and paid for that in the temple at the Forest of Wyrms. I was fighting through various bugbears there and was aware of the danger of a backstab from stalkers, but still hadn't got around to putting on the ironskins I had available ...
For a 41st attempt I was restricting kills to only using spirit summons. I got up to the Cloakwood Mine like that, before eventually failing when a charmed Drasus gained a kill.
No. 42 was another pretty quick outing - I didn't take long to get to level 7, but then got held while mucking about with ghasts at Durlag's Tower.
A 43rd attempt was more promising and looked like it would provide a chance to explore ToB. However, after beating down the Slayer in hell and prompting its transformation to Irenicus - he just stood there, rather than giving his closing speech. I think what probably happened is that he received damage at a critical point in the transformation and that interrupted his script. That's a common problem with Kangaxx and can be avoided by making sure you don't hit him during the transformation. Though I'm not certain that's the issue, it seems likely enough to me to apply my normal rules with bugs, i.e. no reload allowed unless there was no way to avoid the bug triggering. The run was reported in full on the no-reload thread.
I started a 44th attempt immediately and made fairly rapid progress into ToB before eventually being charmed by an erinyes in the Fire Temple after spending too long running round and letting chaotic commands run out. The run was reported in summary form on the no-reload thread.
I've currently got a cleric/ranger run in SoA, but didn't fancy continuing with that for the moment and decided to start another shaman attempt. That's made it through BGEE relatively comfortably. My early shots at Sarevok missed and he slaughtered all my nymphs as a result. To be safe I used an oil of speed to make it easy to stay away from him until one of my dispelling arrows finally hit and I could shoot him down at my leisure.SoD is complete without any real alarms. There are huge quantities of consumables on offer there and I used rather more of those than in BGEE to ensure safety. Let's see if I can keep that going in SoA this time.Oh dear - another one gone early on. Against the first group of cowled wizards I tried to use insect plague against them, but struggled a bit with the changed mechanics of that in v2.6. The result was that I was chased by 2 of them, one plagued and one not. They both ignored a couple of summons put up in their path and continued chasing me down the edge of the map. The aura of spell protections meant it wasn't very easy to see the insects on the plagued one and I made the mistake of letting that get too close when the insects had apparently vanished. I only woke up to the danger as the mage was halfway through casting maze and that started to take effect an instant before I used the area transition.
More experimentation lost me my 46th attempt. At the Bandit Camp I tried to see if there was a way to guarantee only being hit once by lightning from the trapped chest. I'm not sure that there is and I hadn't used any protection ...
Another early failure almost immediately. At Durlag's Tower I used a PfM scroll to kill the ghost. However, while running an invisible stalker it summoned around I attracted a ghast and forgot about that after shaking off the stalker and resting. When leaving the tower it was waiting on the ground floor next to the stairs and paralyzed me before I realized it was attacking.
A 48th attempt has been fairly typical so far. After a cautious start I soon slipped back into bad habits and had a few close shaves - including having to save against petrification in the Candlekeep catacombs when attempting to rely on nymph confusion against the basilisks there. However, this time I survived long enough to deal with Sarevok.Dodgy play continued in SoD, but again I got a bit of luck to help me through. Issues included realizing I only had one Bhaal DUHM, forgetting the Battle Tankard and not picking up any slings to use with the Bullets of Darkness I had made. That meant I could only hit Belhifet with a 20, but I managed to keep Caelar alive long enough to do the job for me. SoA is done as well. I played it a bit safer there, but there were still a few close shaves - for instance waking up in time to the need to use a potion of invisibility when I let Kayardi too close in the Planar Sphere and he started casting maze. Overcoming Jon's regeneration in the final battle takes a fair amount of concentrated damage, but 4 successive lots of energy blades did the job.Well this time I got through to Mel - but failed to get past her first incarnation. The shaman shares the problem with divine casters of lack of damage and there was some thought (and a bit more luck) needed to get that far through ToB. One of the problems with Mel is that the large number of summons she produces mean keeping HPs up is a real struggle. I don't allow healing items and regeneration potions get dispelled very quickly, so I tried to reduce AC as far as possible. That meant though not using the amulet of spell warding, which had been pretty standard for me to get negative spell saves. I think Mel's darts have a save vs spell at -2 against stun and my save of 1 was not good enough against that ...
A 49th attempt failed against Belhifet when I forgot to keep my buffs active and was charmed. That run was reported on the no-reload thread.
I haven't played much for some months and it's 10 months since I had a go at this class. I started playing pretty safely, but once I arrived at Baldur's Gate was taking a few more risks and that proved costly when I got trapped in a corridor by Jardak. Using a potion of invisibility gave me the chance to get away and prepare properly, but I chose to try and finish him off straight away and he finished me off instead .
Another month or so and I tried again, but a bit of carelessness against Sarevok saw me die to a lightning trap.
A few more weeks and I had another go, but once more wasn't being careful enough. At the Bandit Camp I initially tried fighting inside Tazok's tent, rather than retreating out where nymphs were waiting. I did eventually run with HPs into single figures, but Britik must have continued to target me when he came out and I died just as the nymphs held Britik.
Another week and another run. Again it's not been a particularly clean run, but at least I've got past Sarevok this time. One glitch is that I forgot to pick up the violet potion, so couldn't get the strength tome from Candlekeep. However, that's a pretty minor issue for a shaman half-orc, who's got a strength of 19 anyway.
I hurried through SoD as usual in a single session. The only real problem was not the gameplay, but a failure of the cutscene with the Unknowable Horror to trigger. Though I don't like reloading for any reason, I didn't fancy returning to Candlekeep for that this time and loaded the autosave to kill Belhifet once more.
The slog through SoA is also complete. I was careless early on and had to make saving throws 2 or 3 times, but tightened up later. Let's see if I can finish things off this time.
Regrettably not - another disappointing finish with not even getting to Melissan. Against Abazigal I made the mistake of using a PfM scroll, preventing me using necessary spells against him. To speed up the expiry of that, I tried to get to the pocket plane by using the efreeti as a diversion to break contact - but it failed to last long enough. Iron/stone skins had been dispelled, which meant Abazigal could damage me in melee and he managed to get a killing blow in just before I got back to a safe position.
Six months later and a 54th attempt came to an early and inglorious end. Fighting Neera's Thayan wizards I didn't think there was any danger when targeted by a flame arrow, but had forgotten that I had put on Gorion's belt to save inventory space - the 100% extra fire damage for that meant the damage was exactly sufficient to kill me.
An immediate 55th run was no better. Trying to attack the hobgoblins after killing Bassilus I was poisoned. Rather than just run away I tried to heal myself between poison ticks, but failed twice. That delay also gave Geltik the opportunity to catch up to me again and another hit finished me off.
Starting another run straight away didn't really help matters. I'd just got up to level 6 and decided to take on Silke. She survived a call lightning and I backed away slightly out of sight before summoning a spirit for her to target. Knowing a lightning bolt would be coming I moved well away to the side, but the gods were definitely against me this time. The lightning killed the spirit before bouncing off a house at an acute angle and hitting me. While unlikely, that didn't seem too unreasonable, but the lightning then rebounded off an inn back over me again - and the cumulative 53 damage was too much for the 52 HPs I had ...
A 4th run of a bad day also ended early. After completing the Nashkel Mine I attacked the amazons and lightning and fogs soon left 3 of them dead and Telka running at near death. I assumed that she would be little trouble, but when I found her she hit with 3 successive shots, while I missed with a return sling shot. All her shots did high basic damage and the bonus fire damage in addition proved fatal.
In a 58th attempt the next day I once more failed to avoid my tendency to take risks. At the Bandit Camp I stayed in the tent too long and took significant damage from arrows before leaving. Venkt followed and tagged me with an acid arrow before I could run out of sight and I couldn't quite survive the continuing damage from that.
Another day and another attempt. At least this time though I have managed to see off Sarevok, so there's something there to build on.
The trip through SoD was pretty quick and easy and Belhifet stood little chance against Champion's Strength as well as Caelar. Let's see if I can at least get to the Throne this time.
Well, I've got a fair distance on the way as SoA is complete after the Slayer was beaten down with energy blades. The only battle in ToB that scares me is the final one with Mel, but I'll have to keep concentrating to make it there before worrying too much about that.
Less a lack of concentration than being conned by the game prevented me from reaching the Throne once more. I'd got through to Balthazar and decided to clean up the monks accompanying him before using the Pocket Plane to rest up for a final assault using my simmy. With the monks duly all dead I made a bit of space and activated the Pocket Plane ability. When the game reckons you're in combat that ability doesn't work, but this time there was no message to that effect and the animation seemed to proceed properly. During the animation Balthazar appeared on screen, but that shouldn't have prevented me disappearing and I waited for that to happen. Unfortunately it didn't do so and Balthazar came within kicking range and a single hit killed me. I assume that was a Quivering Palm - Balthazar had previously malisoned me, so my spell saving throw had gone up to 3 and was potentially vulnerable. I could I suppose have used Spirit Form to apply improved invisibility to protect against that, but as Balthazar sees through invisibility it wouldn't have had any effect in helping me activate the Pocket Plane, so I didn't bother ...
Three months later and I fancied another go with the shaman, even though I've got another couple of runs on hold. For a change, I did the run without using any shaman spells at all (other than auto-heal use on rest). That worked pretty well and I was well on my way in SoA when I thought it was safe to turn away from the computer briefly while using a sling on a golem at Watcher's Keep that couldn't get through the doorway separating us. Somehow or other though my attack changed from sling to melee and when I turned back again the golem's fists had crunched the life from my splintered bones.
Another 7 months and I had a 61st go with the shaman as part of a multiple run with 5 characters in parallel. Doing that was supposed to make me concentrate more, but that hasn't worked at all well this time . The jester, undead hunter and druid have all failed already in BGEE, but the shaman has at least managed to get past Sarevok.
A quick trip through SoD this morning was done without particular problems.
After a 3 month break I restarted the run, but immediately noted there were no pantaloons when starting SoA - so I must have forgotten to take those out of my bag of holding in SoD. That could have been costly if I managed to get as far as Mel, but I soon died anyway. Attacking the slaver ship, I was intending to just show my face then retreat. However, I hadn't realized that a hobgoblin from an earlier fight had run away into there. That slowed my exit enough that Captain Haegan and his guards came through after me and blocked me against a wall. Without any buffed defenses I was an easy target for them and died before the 2 fire elementals with me could make any impact on the enemies.
The 62nd attempt didn't have to wait long as the shaman came up again as the 3rd in my next multiple of 5 attempt. The unfortunate fate of that one can be read in the continued post here.
Running off the map seems more cheese-ish than using such potions..
I know lots of people think running away is cheesy and that's a perfectly reasonable opinion. Personally it just seems sensible and realistic to me and in fact much less cheesy than alternatives such as:
- instantly consuming magic potions of various sorts
- switching boots or other equipment around as a spell is coming towards you
- using autopause of any type
- reloading when you die
I could go on, but the basic point I suppose is that's it's a game and whatever rules make it enjoyable to you are fine ...
When I first got the game, I thought that any form of pausing was not exactly cheating, but the easy way out. Over time I relented and allowed pause-on-spot-enemy, and pause-on-spot-trap, but still no manual pauses. That game was hard, especially as I insisted on trying to co-ordinate a party of 6!
These days, I am a lot more accommodating of the pause button/feature, and get a lot further in the game, but respect to anyone who plays without pause. I think this is much harder than no-reload, and the combination of both is quite frightening!
In multi-player games we only use pause rarely, but in single player I typically use it constantly during battle situations. I play at 60 fps, so there would be even less time to react to battle events than in a standard 30 fps game.
Having said that I have experimented a bit in the past with no-pause games and might well have a more serious go at that in the future. For some character classes (like the berserker) that's easy to do as you can set up battles in advance to have minimal risk. For other classes with more vulnerability to both magic and physical damage I agree that not using pausing in a no-reload would be a major challenge. I was recently though trying a challenge of running a kensai through BG1 with the restriction that he could only kill anyone using the cursed berserking sword. I didn't complete that, but made enough progress to confirm it was entirely possible - and I'll probably go back to that at some point. Not allowing pausing in that game wouldn't make too much difference as all combats need to be planned in advance anyway. I think BG2 would be impossible to do with a kensai using the berserking sword (due to the huge number of encounters with disabling status effects), but without the sword (or using a barbarian or berserker) it would be at least possible.
I know that I can be successful with the mage, if I can just avoid mistakes for long enough, so my thoughts are more about future attempts. The mage is the last of the classes generated prior to SoD, so all attempts after that will need to do SoD as well as BG1EE and BG2EE. The potential difficulty there is that I've never played past the early bits of SoD!
Most of the BG gaming I've done in recent months has been trying to do a no-reload solo LoB SCS run through BG1. My progress with that has confirmed that's not particularly difficult in principle with a range of classes, but the extra time encounters take provides more opportunities for me to make mistakes . One possibility if I eventually succeed with that would be to continue on to SoD without playing no-reload (as the challenge from @Harpagornis is not a no-reload one anyway). That run would then act as a 'sighter' for my future attempts for this thread. It's also possible though that I will lose interest in a reloading game and just bite the bullet and get stuck into SoD without such a sighter ...
Of course, it looks like I am still in for a long wait, was not expecting it to take 12 months or more when I self-imposed this exile
I wasn't intending to roll up a new class yet, but having annoyingly failed once more to beat Mel with a true class mage I fancied playing some sort of fighter next, rather than throwing more spells around - hence this dwarven defender. Unlike the mage this one will need to get through SoD as well as BGEE and BG2EE. That could be a major hurdle, as I've never got far at all in SoD. However, in previous attempts at that I've been playing it entirely blind - but I've now picked up a reasonable amount of information from posts on this Forum that may well reduce the difficulty significantly .
The easy bit of the first attempt is done with Sarevok down even though I wasn't being particularly careful - let's see if I can tighten things up a bit to give some sort of chance of making progress in SoD.
Well I did reasonably well in SoD in the sense that I progressed a bit further than I've done before - that was helped by taking the easy route against the lich and using a PfU scroll. I did a few other quests for the first time before journeying on to the Troll Claw Forest (which I'd not seen before), but didn't get too far there when coming a cropper against a beetle.I wasn't caught out by the fact that the beetle could stun me, but I had thought that free action would protect me against that - I must have been thinking of my BGT installation ...
After a few more failures with my mage I decided to have a second go with this character where mistakes are less likely to be fatal. He's just got past Sarevok - now to see if I can beat the progress in SoD made with the first attempt ...
Well I did make a bit more progress - making it through to the Forest of Wyrms. I was feeling pleased at having beaten up a green dragon (using potion buffs for the first time in SoD) that attacked me there, but shortly afterwards the game finished like thisThe feeblemind trap was even on the floor rather than a container and as I hadn't been in the area previously I don't know if it was possible to avoid it. Even if theoretically it could have been avoided though, placing a trap like that there is just really mean - one of the hazards of solo no-reload play I suppose .
In a 3rd run I was once more looking forward to getting into SoD, but a lack of concentration on current events proved costly. Back at Candlekeep I decided to take the 'safe' option against Prat by using a first scroll of PfM. I knew that wouldn't help against Bor's darts of stunning, so equipped a ring of free action. Although I've been playing mainly EE for a while now, that was a flashback to my BGT installation where free action protects against stun - unlike in the EE ...
A 4th attempt saw me back in SoD, but I didn't get too far. I decided to attack the crusaders at the bridge in the first area after they had gone neutral (to double-check if they had any useful items). However, I was wearing the belt that gives cold immunity at the expense of double fire damage and one of them hit me with some sort of nasty fire spell ...
After a 6 month break I had a few minutes spare after failing at the Coalition Camp with a shaman and decided to make a start with a dwarven defender. As it transpired I managed to make both a start and finish - the slower weapon speed of throwing axes catching me out as Shoal got just close enough to demand a kiss.
Well that was annoying. An immediate 6th attempt was looking nice when I was up to 126 HPs at the level cap in BG1 - I think that's easily the highest HPs I've ever had in BG1. Against Davaeorn I tried using a potion of magic blocking to attack him. That blocked his initial spells, but must have run out at the exact moment he cast a hold person - and while up to that point I'd been wearing a ring of free action all the time I'd taken that off specifically to allow hasted movement with the boots of speed while chasing Davaeorn. On his own he wouldn't have had time to get through those HPs, but he immediately summoned an ogre berserker to help him out. After 2 painful ends in a row with this character I really must make absolutely sure of at least getting through BG1 next time ...
A 7th attempt was much better. I successfully got through SoD for the first time in single player and had a good start in BG2 before failing to remember that Tanova could use maze. That run was documented on the no-reload thread.
It's over a year since my last attempt with this class, but an 8th attempt is underway. Like most of my recent runs I've struggled to concentrate, but the dwarven defender is a pretty robust class and managed to survive through BG1.
I probably concentrated a bit harder in SoD and that felt that a relatively easy ride to see off Belhifet. With the level of knowledge I've gained about SoD (at least in terms of the required encounters), it's not really any more difficult now than the other games.
I'm through to ToB, though it was a bit of a struggle. Twice I was caught in a maze and had to use both scrolls of PfM to survive those. The first was my fault - forgetting that Kayardi the halfling used maze in the Planar Sphere. The second was the final battle with Irenicus and less my fault given he used a ranged maze, which I don't think he's supposed to have. Note that the ability for the scroll to save you in that situation is not due to protection from magic, as that check is done at the point the projectile hits you. Instead it's the fact that the scroll dispels existing effects at the point it activates - and that includes the maze effect before it actually makes you disappear.Drat - maze got me in the end against Abazigal. He does have a ranged maze, which is a major problem for a non-spell caster. However, I wasn't expecting that to come right at the start of the combat and hadn't yet used potions of magic protection with the aim of avoiding those being immediately dispelled.
Starting a 9th run almost straight away, I'll see if I can avoid the maze problems this time - with fighters I tend not to bother with summons, but might need to make use of those against enemies armed with maze. I've just had a smooth run through BG1.
SoD is now complete - again without major problems. I made things a bit more difficult against Belhifet this time by having no proficiency in any of my +3 weapons - but still beat him up with a decent margin to spare.Another run got thrown away in the Planar Prison. My standard save vs spell at that time was -2, which protects against most spell effects. However, seeing the Warden throw a symbol stun with its -4 penalty I decided I should really use defensive stance to avoid a 5% chance of failure. However, that was a last-second decision and although the stance went up it didn't prevent the spell from taking effect immediately afterwards.
Another month goes by and a 10th run is underway. After several recent runs with a wizard slayer and wild mage I fancied something more straightforward. The dwarven defender has got past Sarevok easily enough, but can he survive SoD again?
SoD proved no problem. This time, I decided to rely just on Caelar for the fight with Belhifet - keeping her alive with greater restoration scrolls even though I don't allow her to be controlled at all in that fight. For a fighter type killing Belhifet is easy anyway, but I wanted to test the restoration strategy out for other characters. There's a potential risk with a character that can't use helmets (allowing the battle tankard to negate fatigue) as, if Caelar dies, the battle might then be unwinnable. However, with so many restoration scrolls available it should be possible to keep Caelar alive without relying on much luck.
SoA is also complete, though not entirely without incident. I noticed early on I'd forgotten (again) to take the pantaloons out of my bag of holding in SoD and hence lost those. Most fights in SoA were straightforward, but I got taken down to about 10 HPs after killing Firkraag as a result of the persistence of the Melf's Acid Arrows he hit me with. I avoided maze problems until the final fight with Irenicus when I lost track of the slayer after my efreeti went invisible without me noticing and Irenicus then did the same and successfully sneaked up on me - costing me 1 of my protection from magic scrolls.Insert appropriate swear word here as once more I fail to make it through. This time Ogremoch was the culprit. I initially proposed to hold him at bay with my simmy for a round or two - which might well have been enough to kill him with 2 lots of GWWs active. However, the bug that destroys simmys when any damage is taken hit and it disappeared before doing anything. That should still have been no trouble and I didn't bother with any other summons or buffs while running him round using K'logarath. He's pretty quick though and I wasn't taking much care and got hit 3 times. I did do him quite a lot of damage though - particularly after he was knocked unconscious briefly by one of the axe blows. I had in mind that I would be able to kill him if he went unconscious again, so when the text reported that had happened I switched to Frostreaver and attacked with a GWW - only to find that the text was lying and 2 more swift blows killed me before I could quite finish Ogremoch. It's not particularly unusual for the text to lie about that sort of thing - sometimes creatures are affected by spells, despite showing successful saves and sometimes the other way round as in this instance. It was my fault therefore for not paying more attention, but (as should be pretty obvious if anyone reads through this thread) I struggle to avoid taking risks over the long period a whole run takes .
A month later and I've started an 11th run. I've just finished an attempt with a solo War Hulk kit (modded, so not part of this challenge) - that got to Mel, but failed there. The kit is restricted to 1 APR and I was also playing using my own rules prohibiting missile attacks as well as my standard restrictions on healing etc. That made it a pretty good attempt to get to the Throne and I'll try this time to avoid risks and allow the dwarven defender to go one better. There were no risks in BG1, with a quick progression and no particular problems encountered while sorting out Sarevok.
Another quick and safe run sees the end of Belhifet. I even remembered to take the pantaloons out of my bag in case I want to make use of them in BG2.
My best intentions went astray when nearing the end of Chapter 2 & 3 work when at level 27. At Windspear Hills I used a sunray to kill a few of the large group of vampires and then looked to finish the rest off with Azuredge. One of those resisted several hits while I was running him round, but I was sure he hadn't even attacked me and carried on with the rest. However, the last vampire managed to charm me and, looking at my portrait, I saw I had in fact somehow been level-drained. I imagine that I just missed an attack, although this is the first run I've had with the v2.5 update and I have noted some differences. For instance horror is now once more badly bugged and doesn't prevent enemies attacking. There's also some use of calls for help and the combination of those things came closer than I would have liked to ending the run while still in Jon's dungeon (group attack by mephits).
A couple of months later and I fancied another easy attempt. So far, so good with Sarevok down.
I failed in the SoD prologue though when Korlasz somehow avoided taking damage despite being hit numerous times and I eventually got shot down by his supporters.
After a little while playing SCS LoB I decided to try an easier option again - and Sarevok has fallen once more in this 13th attempt.
I'd specialized in hammers this run rather than axes and went to double-check whether the Sundermaul hammer was accessible - it's not even with 25 strength. Carrying on it was a pretty trouble-free run through SoD, even though I had to beat Belhifet up twice as a result of the game crashing on exit from hell.
I'm through SoA as well for the first time in a while. I wasn't trying to play particularly safely, but the dwarven defender is much less vulnerable when unbuffed than many other classes and should have a decent chance to go all the way now.
He had a decent chance - but threw it away. I got to the Throne and beat up Mel's first 2 incarnations, but then tried to speed things up by meleeing the 3rd. I didn't notice her casting timestop behind the energy pillar though (I never play with sound on, so rely on visual clues for casting) and wasn't using the Defender of Easthaven or defensive stance - that resulted in being rapidly cut to pieces .
A 14th attempt failed relatively early on when trying to kill Drizzt. I'd been running him around for quite a while trying to get one final critical to finish him off, but wasn't paying attention to the weather and was hit by lightning with fewer than 50% HPs.
A 15th attempt was documented on the no-reload thread. That had a self-inflicted ending when I used exploding arrows against the mage guarding Boareskyr Bridge - I think exploding the bridge myself. Up to that stage it had been a pretty clean run though and I don't think it should be long before I get a dwarven defender to go all the way.
Playing again straight away I made a good start, but took a first risk against Davaeorn and didn't get away with it - charmed when not trying to melee him without any spell protection.
For number 17 I was again taking some risks, but this time I saved against spells a couple of times on the way to seeing off Sarevok.
I started off playing SoD reasonably carefully, but lost out when fighting one of Akanna's aerial servants. Both it and its companion had hit me attacking from invisibility and I'd equipped the regeneration ioun stone to help repair the damage. With 68 HPs and keeping a close eye on the fight I thought there was no need to switch to running and fighting. However, I'd forgotten that in SoD ioun stones don't provide protection against critical hits and the aerial servant managed a critical for 71 damage .
I didn't really feel like playing for an 18th attempt, which perhaps explains that I think I must have allowed Korax to briefly get out of the line of sight of a basilisk he was moving towards - the basilisk then targeted me moving in behind ...
A 19th attempt made reasonable progress, but failed at Spellhold after saves were nerfed by being level drained - that was summarized on the no-reload thread.
Playing a 20th I was struggling to concentrate a bit and made a number of mistakes in BGEE. None were particularly dangerous, but I only realized I'd not picked up the Cloak of Balduran after killing Sarevok.
I was continuing to experiment in SoD and lost out there. At Boareskyr Bridge I tried attacking the gate guards to see if that offered a short cut, but that just started the general fight. I was thinking though that I could go invisible to leave the fight, but that proved to be not possible. It was no surprise to see the enemy mages cast true sight, but in BG1/2 that only activates once a round. Here, invisibility was being automatically dispelled instantly - even when waiting until just after true sight had triggered and I'd put myself in a position where I could be surrounded.
For a 21st attempt I did rather less content in BGEE than I typically do - with the aim that will keep me fresher and with more chance of concentrating throughout the run.
SoD didn't prove much of an obstacle. With mainly sub-zero saving throws there's far less of a requirement to be careful about positioning and buffing than with most characters.
SoA is also down. Here again low saving throws make most of the action straight-forward, though maze is a concern in a couple of places. Can I make it through ToB this time?
Oh bollocks - the answer is no. I was taken aback to find myself dominated by a vampire in the Saradush prison. Looking carefully at the final screen I'd been level drained, which explains how a domination was possible - but as I had the mace of disruption equipped it's hard to understand how I was level drained in the first place (I did load the autosave to double-check that hadn't happened earlier). Oh well - back to the drawing board ...
It's a little while since I've done any of these challenges, but a 22nd attempt with the dwarven defender is underway and has gone past Sarevok without trouble.
With no need to do much of the content, SoD didn't take too long either.
Sigh - another oddity / bug ended this run in the Underdark. I was attacking the demon knights in the Western Tunnels and was stunned by a symbol stun. There are 3 potential reasons why that could have happened:
1) there was a historic bug allowing some effects cast as level 0 spells to receive the -2 penalty intended for specialist mages casting their preferred spells. That was supposed to have been fixed in v2.5 though.
2) looking at the screenshot at the end there is a level drain icon on the portrait. There was nothing in the battle text suggesting level drain and the saving throws shown in the character record had not been affected. However, the information in the character record is not always correct, so it's still possible that saving throws had been nerfed.
3) it's not that unusual for effects against enemies to be saved against, but be applied anyway and that could have happened in reverse here.
Whatever happened I suspect it shouldn't have. That's been the case with a number of these runs, which is one of the reasons that successes have been rather elusive .
A couple of weeks later and a 23rd attempt didn't last long when I attacked Kirian's group. She was paralyzed by Korax and died before I thought I had drawn Baerin away alone. In a fight with him I would have been a heavy favorite and used defensive stance to avoid taking much damage. However, after a round or so the other 2 turned up to switch the odds. I tried running, but the slowdown from stance makes that difficult and I didn't quite make it.
For a 24th attempt I once more summarized progress on the no-reload thread - this time limiting each session to 1 hour to try and help me maintain concentration. That must have worked reasonably well as I finally managed another success (at the 159th attempt since my previous one ).
Afterthoughts
Defensive stance can be more of a liability than an asset in the early game - certainly the way I play as it makes mobile attacking and retreating much harder. However, the saving throw benefit it gives is helpful at the end of BG1 and SoD and later in BG2 the damage resistance is pretty useful. The dwarven saving throws and fighter APR & HPs complement the damage resistance to make this class a formidable tank - more than making up for being not quite as offensively strong as other fighters.
I tried out another new class with a bard making his way through BG1 before meeting his doom from a SoD trap - that run was summarised in rhyme on the no-reload thread.
A 2nd attempt two and a half years later ended quickly. I found a second scroll of stinking cloud, which persuaded me to send Korax in against Kirian & co. He died quickly, but I still didn't break off the attack while trying to shoot an unconscious Kirian down - but I succumbed to a rigid thinking from Peter.
Ten months later and another run ended even more quickly. I'd already demonstrated I perhaps wasn't in the mood by accidentally trying to steal from Winthrop, but bought my way out of that trouble. There was no escape though when I carelessly allowed a carrion crawler near Shoal to get into attacking distance ...
A fourth attempt soon afterwards seemed to be progressing nicely up to confronting Belhifet. However, a failure to renew protection from magic shielding potions started a slide to disaster there ...
I wasn't expecting to play this again for a while, but a random selection turned up another bard just a few days later. As usual I started pretty focused, but soon reverted to taking a few risks. That resulted in a couple of close shaves - particularly when I got stuck in my own web while fighting Slythe. He took me down to 2 HPs before I broke free and ran just as he was winding up for the fatal stroke. Web was more successfully used on Sarevok - he got stuck a couple of times and was taken down to the point where a single magic missile could finish him off.I didn't really feel like playing, but carried on into SoD and paid the price for not taking enough care at the Camp invasion. I'm not sure what killed me against the last mob - could have been a couple of simultaneous critical hits or failing a spell check.
With the current forum closing tomorrow, I decided to start one last run - randomly choosing a bard 8 months after the previous attempt with this character. There was the usual mixed bag, with some dodgy play, but I managed to complete BGEE.A couple of months later I finally got around to trying to continue this run. However, I was a bit lazy in attacking the bridge at Boareskyr and the mage managed to open his portal - fire elementals then attacked the barrels and exploded the bridge.
And despite making no more progress I thought I would try out another new class. That was a Priest of Lathander that would have dualled to thief in BG2, but fell to a bit of carelessness just before the end of SoD. That run was also documented on the no-reload thread and the silver lining there was that's the furthest I've been in SoD - largely because this time I was generally keeping things simple rather than exploring too many new things. On that evidence I feel as though it should be easy enough to no-reload SoD in future.
A second run this morning has made pretty quick progress and just finished BG1 when a doomed Sarevok got stuck in a web trap for too long while surrounded by skeletons. I did somewhat less work than the first attempt with this character, but was still close to 300k XP when transferring to SoD - I must resist the temptation to hunt basilisks in future . Now, can I avoid mistakes in SoD this time?
Unsurprisingly the answer to that is no . I wanted to kill Morentherene for the shield upgrade and with her at near death I was tempted into trying to run round a bit longer to get a killing blow in - but she managed to attack round a corner when I didn't expect it.
Eight months later I thought it was time to have another go with this character. He's just gone past Sarevok, though annoyingly I forgot to pick up the wisdom tome from Candlekeep. He'll remain as a cleric in SoD, before dualling in BG2 (if he gets that far).
In the event he didn't get that far. There seemed to be no danger as I worked through the last few guards around the entrance to the Underground River. However, there are a few traps scattered round the gateway and I had ignored those thinking they just did a bit of damage - but one proved to be hold person.
Several more months and this character's having another go. He's done BG1 and I think remembered everything there this time.
SoD is out of the way as well, though that felt pretty difficult this time. There were hard fights at Boareskyr Bridge, where I fought rather than surrendering the garrison, at the Coalition Camp where a scared crusader triggered the final group before I'd finished with the clerics and against Belhifet. Amusingly, he was eventually killed by his own Hamatula. And another run ends in disaster. I'd dualled at level 12 and was at thief level 11 when going into the underground tombs. A couple of backstabs killed Pai'Na, but I felt compelled to kill the spiders as well. As usual horror didn't work properly there and I had to run for it, but found there was no way out due to oddities about the way the web structure works. I wasted several seconds trying and failing to get through the apparent gap and lost the opportunity to get out using LMD. Things got worse when I started taking poison damage, despite not showing as being affected by poison. I tried to use a potion of firebreath to blast a way out, but ran out of time before I could get outside to rest.
A 5th attempt has just defeated Sarevok. In writing this I've realized that I've again forgotten the pantaloons, though at least with a thief that wouldn't make much difference in ToB if I get that far .
I'm through SoD again, though once more it wasn't particularly easy. I didn't use potions at Bridgefort and had a harder fight there than I might have as a result. I also forgot to renew protection against fear against Belhifet and, as a result, started running round there when Belhifet was at near death. However, Caelar survived long enough that I recovered almost straight after her death and was able to quickly finish Belhifet off by sling.A lack of concentration resulted in another death at a very similar stage to the last one. I was again just coming up to thief level 12 and had just gone to the lower crypts in the Graveyard. I backstabbed a sword spider there to put it to near death and then tried to finish it off in melee. It got lucky though and I didn't and I wasn't paying enough attention to run until too late.
A 6th go has got past Sarevok, though once again I forgot something - this time failing to take the violet potion to Candlekeep and being unable to get the strength or wisdom tomes there.
This time I failed to get through SoD. At the Coalition Camp I made the mistake of using horror - one of the mages then wandered too close to the fire and precipitated a general assault. I killed quite a few of them, but ultimately the last half dozen or so exploded the barrels.
A month later and I made another start, only to rapidly come to a finish - I forgot to check the time before travelling and got ambushed by bandits on the way south from Beregost.
Three months later and an 8th attempt has had a pretty smooth run through BGEE.
Things were going smoothly through SoD as well - until I was trapped. At the Underground River I was aware of traps around the barricades near the compound entrance, but I hadn't previously realized there is actually a hold person trap directly in front of the cyclops - specifically placed to catch you if you try talking to it or attacking it in melee ...
Another 10 months and attempt no. 9 is through BGEE and SoD. I forgot to pick up the Cloak of Balduran, but otherwise progress has been pretty comfortable so far. Let's see if I can actually get cleric abilities back in BG2EE this time ...
Well I did get abilities back and got up to thief level 28, but not without making a number of mistakes. In the end another of those proved fatal when I went to the Twisted Rune without a scroll of PfU (I had filled one scroll case and put it into storage without transferring a PfU scroll). My experience of Shangalar without a scroll is limited and I was caught out when he used maze.
A couple of months later and a 10th attempt failed at the palace. I've had a few failures there recently, so might have to resort to using the odd charm to tip the odds a bit more in my favor ...
Another six months and I'm trying again. My previous run was with a kensai where I was taking lots of risks, but this attempt has been much more focused thus far and has come through BGEE without difficulty.
I got diverted into a couple of different types of runs, so left this run at the start of SoD for the best part of a month. Getting under way again, it only took a couple of hours or so to complete SoD. There was a relatively narrow escape against Morentherene when I forgot to use PfP before the fight and got taken low on HPs. Other than that things were pretty smooth and Belhifet was an easy target using multiple Champion's Strength scrolls.Once more good progress in BG2 was thrown away. I was almost at the level cap when I tried failed to take care against a beholder and attacked in melee with a spell save of only 0. That left me vulnerable to domination and it duly took advantage ...
Seven months more and I hadn't played anything on this challenge for about 6 weeks. However, it's my turn to be the PC in both my regular Trio and Duo in multi-player, so I thought I should add a solo run for symmetry - and a random choice turned this one up. I had a pretty smooth run through BGEE today, with plenty of use of skeletons to overwhelm enemies. Sarevok's exceptionally good THAC0 did make me retreat from combat with him, but even hasted he couldn't deal with the remaining skeletons.A week later and I've made it through SoD. I got lucky on the bridge when the mage managed to complete a lightning bolt - that hit one of the barrels, but failed to destroy it. Otherwise it was pretty smooth on the way to Belhifet. I tried to kill him with cursed scrolls of ailment. However, even after having MR reduced and being successfully doomed he survived the 3 attempts with those. Still, the good defenses of clerics and ability to use champions strength scrolls meant it was no trouble to shoot him down with bullets of darkness.SoA is done as well. I was at the level cap before leaving for Spellhold, but with only human saving throws there was still a need to be careful after that. However, I just about managed that and eventually saw off Irenicus. He survived against a first grouping of spike traps, but was already wounded by sling shots when he came across a second group and they proved too much.I carried on immediately into ToB, but died almost straight away in the first pocket plane fight. I set some traps there, forgetting that Duke Eltan had physical mirror up and would reflect the trap projectiles ...
Curious to see how a post-SoD character will alter your approach to early SoA, starting with more xp and potentially more character-appropriate gear.
I do not remember this ever happening before. They hit us on the left side of the screen. They came out of nowhere and had my thief down to almost zero in two backstabs, plus they took out Korgan. They are using invisibility potions to keep backstabbing us en masse. Jahiera had to summon in an elemental blocking force to take them out.
I am not sure if this is SCS30 behavior or just a result of SoD experience. Any clarity?
