I play in an IRL Pathfinder group and an online group that switches between two DMs. One DM runs a 3.5 game and the other runs 5e.

I was never really into PnP and I don't think in the future I will be able to get into it.

I've played on and off since school (40 years ago) but always either D&D or Runequest and always with groups of friends rather than one of those 'official' clubs that just seem to be groups of strangers competing against each other.

I've been playing since october, We had a TPK within a few sessions as we were all idiots and our babarian wasn't there that day. (rogue tanking doesn't work as I found out). we rerolled characters and have gone quite successfully since. My DM recently asked if one of us would be willing to do some DMing as he was getting tired and had never been a player before so I volunteered, I just helped them make characters 20 mins ago. that's about it for my PnP experience.

@semiticgod , What about your real life relationships with those players? Are they going to give you kudos for a well-played good-game, or are they going to think your role-playing idea in their group speaks to your real life personality, think you're an obnoxious jerk, and refuse to play with you in the future? :(

I've played 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition (A)D&D, Twilight 2000 and Space 1889. The T2k group was when I was in the Army stationed in West Germany, that took a peculiar sense of humor.

@semiticgod Our DM also used to play mind games with us (giving us hidden agendas etc.) and unfortunately for us he also happened to be an attorney who specialised in Company Law, so he could turn the rulebook inside out and make it say whatever he wanted it to (but always with good humour).

My old DM used to kill and mutilate our characters in the most gruesome ways :I
At one point I had to give up on my character because she wasn't able to handle the trauma anymore.

    Good times.

@Buttercheese That reminds me, we also used to play Paranoia occasionally.

Twilight 2000, now THAT is a blast from the past!

I have been a P&P player since I was 10 or 11...but I don't have anyone to play with anymore. *cries hysterically*

Never considered playing online. Anyone here do that? Any experiences to report?

My online group uses roll20.net to play online and it's great. many of us met through WoW and were hardcore RPers on there. Now we play D&D for our RP fix. But yeah, roll20+Skype can lead to loads of fun. Also having PDFs of all the books is more convenient than carrying physical copies, though I do own a lot of physical copy rulebooks.

Yeah, that was '86-87. I still have the box set.

I don't understand how a P&P game online would work out logistically. Do you all have to be online at the same time when playing roll20? Or do you play by email? How does it work?

Played some D&D in college. Not since then. Fun times.

Other. More or less opposite of the second option - I play rarely but now have a group. Also, have done some openRPG games a while back.

Have played Battletech in the early 90s. Have also played 2nd ed D&D during the 90s and took a hiatus from gaming. Never played 3.0 or 3.5. Then got back in a few years ago with 4th ed D&D up until about 18 months ago. Switched over to W40K (Rogue Trader and then Deathwatch) and played that for a year. Currently playing Traveller for the last few months which is quite excellent. The group I play with plays every Saturday much to the chagrin of my girlfriend.
