I actually betrayed the party a few sessions in by trying to kidnap one of the party's NPCs and send her to her death in exchange for a big cash money wad from an evil witch. The GM worked with me on the plan. My gnome got knocked out during the attempt, but the guards took him away before one of the other players had a chance to gouge out the gnome's left eye as punishment (the party needed a left gnome eye for a spell component). The same player later applauded me for making the move, saying it took balls for a beginner PnP player to just waltz into the group and do something that evil to the party.
I didn't just betray the party; I actually lied to the other players extensively about my character's background, weeks in advance of the betrayal, when my character first joined the group. For one thing, I told them my gnome hated slavery due to seeing his friends and loved ones made into slaves, which endeared me to the above player, because his character had been enslaved himself. But the reality was that my gnome had no problem with slavery, and actually had a habit of selling people he didn't like into slavery.
He was a very evil character, but he didn't let it show.
One day I might delve back in, but I'm afraid that won't be any time soon.
As it happens I only briefly had a friend who was into AD&D in my school days and although I was fascinated by his hefty rulebook and all the lore and game mechanics, we never quite got around to D&D and mostly played Magic the Gathering, which doesn't take as much time or effort.
I also played quite a lot of Warhammer 40k tabletop when I was younger, I don't think that counts as "PnP" though.
Though funnily enough, my friends and I devised a way to play Warhammer with actual pencil and paper because for a long time we couldn't afford to actually buy all the miniatures we wanted. It involved drawing the battlefield on an A3 piece of paper and drawing our soildiers as little circles and using centimeters instead of inches for measurement. It worked surprisingly well and we had great fun doing it until we gradually built up actual miniature armies.

At one point I had to give up on my character because she wasn't able to handle the trauma anymore.
Good times.
Never considered playing online. Anyone here do that? Any experiences to report?
I don't understand how a P&P game online would work out logistically. Do you all have to be online at the same time when playing roll20? Or do you play by email? How does it work?
Essentially once a week we all log on roll20 and Skype together. We talk in character and stuff like you would IRL and do the Rolling of dice and moving of characters in the environment on roll20's grid.
Is that turned based? Meaning that you communicate gia the forum? How does that work?
