Character Colors

This is a rather odd topic to be making, but I was curious, when applying a color to a character, what do you personally base it on? How you imagine them to dress? Their personality? Because it fits their portrait? Or simply because it looks good?

All of the above to a certain extent but mostly I try to match colours to their portrait. Although with my Cavalier I used the nice glowy gold colour x2 cuz it kinda suited the class, adds a kindof divine ornate touch.

Sadly most of the portraits i pick usually come with people dressing in brown, or some shade of brown, so I try to pick colors that fit them personally, I like having a multicolored team, sort of like a rainbow.

For the primary/main color, I focus more on the portrait, but some portraits don't show a lot of color because it is mainly just a head, and others, as @HaikomenBladeMaster mentioned, have really dull colors. In those cases, I go with personality and/or class. Also l agree about multi-colored party members because that makes it easier to see visually who is where/going where and who is currently speaking.

I do the opposite for the minor color, though. The main character can have whatever minor color I like, but then the minor color for everyone else is the MC's main color.

I will say that although there are fewer options, I much prefer the original game's method of picking colors from a box rather than the slider in EE. I have a lot of troubles stopping on any individual color. Maybe this is a mouse issue, though, in which case it will be easier once I get my main PC back.

I always go with the colours I see in my portrait. The main colour I choose based on whatever clothing colour I see predominantly in the portrait, and the minor colour could be anything from the colour of a necklace to the colour of the stripes on their shirt.

I go with whatever I want, really, and very often that is something slightly clashing or unlikely. So, basically, not the portrait colours. I change them around frequently throughout a game, so it's not that I won't eventually cycle back to portrait colours, but there are other factors.

To go with "clashing" or "unlikely", Druids don't always sit on green, nor does Edwin stay with red or orange.

There's also the matter of what somebody might be wearing in armour. If you've got Red Dragon Armour on, then it's ugly to wear bold blue underneath that. The Robe of Vecna, inclining towards green, suits plenty of colours, but not pink, so I'll not put my Mage in pink for that one.

Additionally, I like to make sure my party is ranging through colours. Three characters on variations of blue, for example, looks a bit bland and uncharacteristic when you get XP rewards for quests, or several characters are speaking through a dialogue encounter.

Ultimately, all and any of this can be classed as trivial. Fashion is a playground. :P

Sometimes I try to match the color on the portrait a little, but only if I already like the dominant color. I do a lot of green/gold or red/gold.

I just pick colors that looks good with my armor/robes and playermodel. It really is a mood thing, but I don't put much time into it.

I try to match the portrait as close as possible, I also do the same with weapon choice. I could not use a portrait with a sword as a cleric even if it was the most suitable one to use.

Depends on the run. One time, I tried a Power Rangers playthrough.

I like to make all four colors of a character the same. So, I'd have an all-black character, an all-white character, an all-blue character, and so on.

I frankly obsess with matching my character portrait and the character colors, as well as matching the weapons to the portrait.

Interesting idea. Why group Fighters and Clerics together though? Grouping all Warriors (Fighters/Rangers/Paladins,) kinda makes sense, but Clerics are a different breed all together.

That's a neat idea. I would probably use different groups rather than class-specific. In the midst of battle, what I most need to know is who should go up close and personal when the enemies get close, who can if it's needed (i.e. if an enemy starts attacking them in melee range while the actual tanks are already engaged), and who needs to run away. For everything else, I tend to click on the portraits rather than the ragdolls. If I need to cast a spell or use Turn Undead, for example, I click on the mage or cleric via portrait rather than trying to figure it out from the colors, but the colors could definitely be useful for quick reactions.

I would show mine but he's kinda in Durlag's tower and the light isn't very flattering down here :/

I generally try to match at least one color to something in the custom portrait, but I'm also fond of all the new metallic colors (the options used to be very limited on metallics).

I use primary colors for my characters, usually red, yellow, green, purple, orange, and blue. That way I can keep track of them better, because the circles under their feet reflect their color.

I try to get them to contrast, and do much the same as the above user in using primary colours.
For some reason black, grey, brown, white, no matter what you pick the character circle ends up coloured white anyway.

I like the avatar colors to match the portrait colors, too. I'm actually rather OCD about it.

Me too - I like the sprite to match the portrait.
