I write for myself first, so I'm happy -- and a little surprised -- when others enjoy it as well. And there are a lot of different writing styles in the journals here. My purpose is to document playthroughs and not write novels.
I think my style works best when I take more time between game sessions. In my first and second runs I glossed over some areas that I could have made more interesting. Partly, some of the silly comes from doing stupid things for role-playing reasons. Feel bad for a dead Rasaad? Try to raise him later. Help Minsc rescue his charge even though we're not high enough level? Too bad.
... Tilly Wigglebottom will get through the entire series! n.n
I'll probably switch to Thistlebottom a lot, though. n_n Playing a caster is not my thing... but I'm expecting fun from only going to level 4 mage spells! ^_^ Overuse of low level spells. XD
Looks like I'll have to set aside dedicated play time each weekend. I will also pledge not to play another desktop game until finishing SoA. (Pausing until SoD is released and waiting to see if a BG2 expansion is in progress before SoA.)
What was this Tilly Run about anyway? *-) ... ... ... Agh, this will be a painful run! O_O'
I have ordered a computer desk. ^__^ (And a table for eating. n.n) I will get it this weekend then maybe put it together the weekend after. Very tired.
Well, all my posts on this page _haven't_ been story updates. I'm sorry.
I don't want to give another non-update update in this thread again until story resumes. Here is the update: I am working straight until December 24th. On the 24th or 25th, I'll try to set up my linux machine (even on the non-computer desk) to play a little.
So far: - Wigglebottom is gimped in the long term with nothing passed level 4 mage spells. (And 6 spells per level?) - The Flaming Fist tried to kill me on the road. That's never happened before. Seriously, they overreacted to Imoen. - We used most of our money to resurrect Minsc when he was unluckily killed in his first battle and against his racial enemy. May not be able to resurrect Rasaad in time. (Let's say 4 days before too much decomposition?) - Because Minsc wants to reach Dynaheir, we can't explore around town to gain our bearings. - No one has levelled. Imoen is still level 1! In Nashkel!
Does anyone know if Minsc's Dynaheir-quest timer stops after he dies once? Gah, I just know we're going to go over his limit and he's going to attack us. -_-
With pure luck, we make it through the wilderness towards a gnoll 'stronghold'. (It's ruins of a castle.) On the way, a well-dressed man pleads for us to kill a bear so he can cross a bridge. Wants us to fight a bear? We tell him that's daft and that he can find his own way across the river.
The ruined castle is home to a pack of gnolls. How are we going to get in there to find this man's witch? Imoen suggests killing a few at a time... ... To anyone who finds this journal: the master of Candlekeep is a wanker.
A couple of _very large_ orge men asked us for money to cross a bridge to the castle (I wonder how many tourists come by this relic?). Minsc hits the first ogre man... his mace breaks. Then Minsc drops it to the ground, punches out the ogre, and throws him into the waterfall. Then he does it to the second man!
In the fortress, Minsc punches out the gnoll guard. Afterwards, we plead he use a sword, only to watch him throw it away. He punched out 8 gnolls on the way up ('fortress of gnolls', indeed) then a 9th gnoll on the way down. According to his witch, Dynaheir, that we saved, 'Minsc puncheth out all who waveth their arms-eth'.
What a pair! Dynaheir looks at me with some pity yet then looks at Immy and I both with a measure of respect. We are orphans in the woods, after all.
//Seriously, he actually broke his mace on the first gnoll and I didn't notice until the 6th! o_O I saw that a few of them were falling over, but thought it may be a new feature of blunt weapons (should it be? it's like getting hit with a heavy fist XD). When I opened his inventory to check on available potions, I noticed the crumbled mace. I gave him a sword, only to find his attack was better with fists! Plus, knocking the gnolls down probably saved my butt here at level 1! XD
To my relief, there are less than 10 gnolls if you arrive at level 1. If you arrive at level 2 or 3, you're not much stronger and there are at least twice that amount, I think.
Imoen went up a level! ^__^ Prouda that girl. Immy went up 3+2 hp. I put half her points into locks and half into traps.
Glitches: One gnoll totally disappeared. He was re-positioning himself at the top of the stairs when he went behind it, out of our view. We came up and he was nowhere up there.
EDIT I have to admit, I broke one of my unspoken rules. I had Minsc drink a potion during battle. I immediately wavered on the rule, because I know in BG2, the enemies will drink potions during battle. I'm going to pretend it's either drinking or splashing it on yourself. I'll still limit applying potions during battle, though.
As we start to tell Dynaheir we need money to raise a deluded monk, her eyes widen -- then she orders Minsc to pick up all the gnolls' weapons. ALL OF IT. And he can! In town, the money we get is little (32 gp), but it's enough to raise the monk. He ignores our firm words to stay in town, away from danger. It's an awkward turn when we see him begging by the inn again. He seems nonplussed, however.
Speaking of Minsc punching (or 'punchething' people), Minsc and Dynaheir lay into the man who wanted her dead. What happened between them, we wonder, Immy and I.
At the shop, the giant of a man desired a giant sword. Immy and Dynaheir manage to guide him towards a mace and shield. (The shield, we all hope, may guard against any additional head wounds.)
There isn't much money. But we're going places. Even the mayor of the town -- with some hesitation -- asks our 'mercenary' party to consider helping the town by investigating the mines. Dynaheir says all in good time. For now, we'll investigate around town and train how to fight under Minsc. Are we orphans any longer? Is this a new family? In any case, we all agree it's better in a pack.
Dynaheir seems a trustworthy sort. When Imoen went to sell dad's dagger, Dynaheir insisted we keep it with us.
Glitches: When writing a journal entry, I can't scroll down? The scroll bar will move... yet it won't actually scroll down to the lines, which remain off the page. So I write 2 journals in succession.
When I write 2 journal entries one after the other, the 2nd one will be placed in front of the 1st in time. I think this happens when the journals have been written in the same hour.
I'll pay attention to see if this behaviour is constant and are verifiable bugs.
Honest, I didn't expect to stay with Minsc and Dynaheir. I thought Minsc would die -- I thought the entire party would die! -- trying to reach the gnoll fortress, much less succeed. XD Well, this may not turn out so bad after all. The usefulness of Minsc's punching of people unconscious was also a surprise. I almost feel stupid for giving him a mace instead.
This is a strange run. My characters wisely didn't head to the Friendly Arm Inn (why would big armoured man leave the note on our father to suggest we go there?), so if the 3 week(?) timer is in effect... Khalid and Jaheira will disappear from the game. That means I'm without my preferred, well-armoured duo. I don't normally go without them on most long runs.
I had also wanted Garrick in the party. He seems a nice sort. But with Dynaheir, and later Immy when she switches to mage, and even Wigglebottom, I'd have 3 mage sorts already. An extra bow would be nice. And another frontliner or two. And another cleric. o_o'
Oh that BGEE title theme is wonderful. Sam Hulick did a great job.
Scanned my character stats. Bit worried about 35% 'to learn spell'. XD I've gotten a terrible feeling that I'm going to lose all copies of certain spell scrolls. I can manage that okay: what I can't manage are low hp rolls for fighters. *sighs* Good luck, Minsc!
Everyone is still level 1, except Imoen. I'm happy Minsc has a shield. None of us can take many hits.
Investigating concerns of Nashkel residents. Collected 11 hobgoblin helmets today. We strung their swords with twine and dragged it all to the shop. Sold for scrap metal. Perhaps this metal won't corrode?
So I went to clear another area alongside the road. After loading, I tried to save... wasn't allowed to. Turns out the 3 Flaming Fist soldiers we upset are _still on the map_. I figured they would have disappeared by now. After fretting about the reputation loss, I decided to kill one then flee (then return to kill one and flee)... only to learn that we didn't incur a loss when the first one went down. Or from any of the others.
It took our potion of speed (Immy), a health potion, and the last castings of the wand of missiles. In exchange? Plate armour! and 45exp -- for all 3. o_O
Also, to my delight, I noticed I have the bumbling mage portrait: the woman with the backwards pointed wizard's hat and book. c: I hope this EE portrait imports into BG:SoD!
Going further from Nashkel was a mistake. The giant armoured man didn't ambush us... but the Flaming Mercenaries did. Dynaheir, of all people, insisted we were in the right. And we killed them.
The armour can be cleaned of their symbol, but the distinct helments cannot. We'll sell it as scrap.
In exciting news... I'm on step 20 of ~60 for putting my desk together! Playing BG while my stomach is big from fat happy.
In town, to be safe, we sell all the Flaming armour, buying a large platemail set for Minsc.
Outside of town? We came across more hobgoblins and also ghouls. GHOULS. I had never seen undead before. I don't think even Minsc could punch them out...
'For the head of Tilly Wigglebottom' !!!
That giant armoured man sent a tiny armoured man after us -- after me! Fortunately, Minsc and Dynaheir are with us. Even so... we should avoid most parts of town and stay outside.
Imoen and I, we're learning, right? But I've got this knot in my gut that a large party will approach us one day in the field.
Ogre... MAGI! Close to the main road. Fled fast as we could... stopped to heal then ran some more, 'till the gut in my pain shook the one in my heart.
At some carnival now. Little dog men around...
What is a carnival if you can't afford anything at the stores? We skip most of them. There is, however, a 'stone warrior maiden' at the centre of it all -- at least, for us, because another sword arm would be welcome! We don't have the money for her cure either.
So far, Dynaheir has been content to let Imoen lead, although the witch keeps her eyes out for anything 'of interest'. At first, I thought she wasn't going to tell us their goal, but now I'm sure they don't know. Something has drawn Dynaheir here. Hence, our wandering on the countryside.
//I've never seen an ogre mage in that area before. It was NE of Nashkel and SW of Ulcaster. A flash appeared. I had no idea what it was. Saw an NPC human. Then this ogre mage appeared! Holy heck, from where did that guy come from! O_O
Attacked by skeletons near the ruins of a school. Minsc died. Dragged him back to Nashkel a second time. I was sad until Immy pointed to a similar body trail. We're not the only adventurers dying out there! And so long as one of us lives, the others can be live again!
In town, we saved the 'stone warrior maiden'. Branwen is similar to Minsc, living for battle. She's out for the leader of bandits, who changed her to stone. More enemies? At least she can point out who they are, so we're not fooled.
We gave her a helmet with horns.
Imoen levelled again! She rolled 4+2 hp! ^_^
EDIT - Death count! Minsc has died twice. Once with a gnoll random encounter and once with these skellies. Tilly has died once. With these skellies. As soon as Minsc fell, I couldn't get out of reach of the arrows in time. I even had the Shield spell up. With 6hp, keeping her out of fights entirely is all I can do -- and I don't want to do that with Tilly or Dynaheir!
Happy to see how well Immy is doing. She's level 3 and is a good acting leader.
Another death. A ghoul came at Minsc, stopped him with a touch. Branwen distracted the ghoul long enough for us to kill it, but not before it killed her. Imoen and I carried her back together. Minsc was too weak with disease to carry anything. He leant on Dynaheir. It was odd. Well at least if Immy or I die, our friends will raise us right back! We're not sure where they go, but Minsc definitely wants to be on this side of things, smashing heads and what not.
I spoke too soon. Much too song. Back in town (after fleeing both human and hobgoblin bandits), we had to sell the battle priest's armour to raise her. We have 8gp: 7 after staying in the stables a night. She'll just have to stand back for a while.
Tilly levelled to 2 priest! Gained 4 hitpoints! That's the maximum! HOly wow! Exclamation! ^_^ hehehehe she has TEN hp now. She's superbad.
We leave town, little blue men attack. Their small swords sell for 12gp.
We leave town, skeletons attack. Their weapons and armour sell for 10gp. An elaborate bow sells for 20gp.
We leave town, little (other) blue men attack in a frenzy. Their dirty gems sell for 20gp.
We need more little dirty blue men.
Two bears come out of nowhere. Minsc died as the final bear fell. That's 3 or 4 deaths now? But I think Minsc was used to this even before we met. How many adventures must he have had?
Thirty gold pieces is not enough to raise this man again so soon. We scrounge and scavange. That's what adventurers are? The two of us haven't even be out of the keep for a week!
We did well hunting. A couple of gnolls here and there (Minsc was proud to hear!)... but on our way back, several dirty blue men surrounded us. They killed Dynaheir.
We fled then doublebacked. It was Imoen's idea that we would carry (drag!) the barbarian while our other barbarian carried the witch. However, Branwen dragged Minsc faster than I ever thought I could run! Imoen and I took turns carrying Dynaheir.
Luckily, a potion Dynaheir had sold enough to raise both of them. We're without all their original equipment, however. And Branwen's hammer broke. This iron crisis is small, but when big things go wrong, small aren't far behind.
--- running death county Tilly: 1 Minsc: 3 Branwen: 1 Dynaheir: 1
After raising Minsc and Dynaheir, the stress is over and our muscles are spent. We sleep for nearly a day at the inn. Everyone knows it's dangerous to stay in Beregost for long, so we leave when our bodies can stand.
Bagh! I can't wait until Minsc gets to level 2! XD Getting killed in 1 or 2 hits is nuts, and it happens a lot even with -3 AC.
Urgh ~_~ Wiped out by a bandit npc party in the Drizzt area. I was doing well, but my party can't afford antidotes yet and Minsc was one hit killed again. I ran around, then Branwen was killed, then a cave bear started chasing me! Why was it instantly hostile and why won't it attack other humanoids? >:( Why bears always attack Wigglebottoms? :v ---
In the woods, we struggle against bandits demanding our deaths for our money. With Branwen's magic, we killed them all. All 3 of them. After that one battle, I wanted to sleep.
Immy met a fellow, rather dashing, fighting gnolls. Then she asked me to search through them for valuables. Foo. She's taking the leadership role rather seriously.
Dynaheir and I have gathered a number of spell scrolls. We'll have a go at them, although I've only learnt 2 spells in my life...
--- Minsc levelled to 2!! Gained 5+1 hp. Dynaheir levelled to 2! Gained 4+2 hp.
Running Deaths County! + Party Wipes Tilly: 1 + 1 party wipe Minsc: 3 Branwen: 1 Dynaheir: 1
Thinking about it's unfair how I resurrect my party, but the enemy never does. *-) Maybe 'cause we leave entire parties wiped out? We always stop when _our_ party is entirely wiped out. XD
Minsc and Branwen were killed by a ghast during the night. If you can keep your distances, they are slow and can be put down. But close up? You're paralysed.
We drag them back, leaving the equipment we got off the bandits. At first, we only had enough money to raise Minsc but then we sold the bandits' gems -- we have almost 500 gold _after_ raising Branwen! We're rich!
The next day we stay at the Nashkel inn. Dynaheir insists I try to learn a spell from a magic scroll. This, after failing twice herself. But I succeed! At some sort of ball spell...
! At 35% learning chance, Tilly learns Chromatic Orb on the first try! Dynaheir failed 2 spells with 75% learning chance. n.n
For the next week, we rove around town. Skeletons attack us, blue men attack us, ogres attack us (we kill 1 then flee). Every time we return, we're a little wealthier from their equipment and a little stronger ourselves. The storekeep also pays for bandit scalps. (How does he know which is a bandit's?)
It's been nearly a month since leaving Candlekeep. No assassins have reached us this far south. Let's keep it that way.
On an ogre leader, Minsc picks up this gigantic sword. It looks unbreakable! (And believe you me, Minsc and Branwen have broken their fare share of hammers and maces on faces!)
--- Level ups! Branwen rolls 1+1 hp noooo ._.' (at least she gets level 2 spells!)

inn. Everyone knows it's dangerous to stay in Beregost
for long, so we leave when our bodies can stand.
Bagh! I can't wait until Minsc gets to level 2! XD Getting killed in 1 or 2 hits is nuts, and it happens a lot even with -3 AC.
---
In the woods, we struggle against bandits demanding our
deaths for our money. With Branwen's magic, we killed
them all. All 3 of them. After that one battle, I wanted to
sleep.
Immy met a fellow, rather dashing, fighting gnolls. Then
she asked me to search through them for valuables. Foo.
She's taking the leadership role rather seriously.
Dynaheir and I have gathered a number of spell scrolls.
We'll have a go at them, although I've only learnt 2
spells in my life...

Minsc levelled to 2!!
Dynaheir levelled to 2! Gained 4+2 hp.

Minsc and Branwen were killed by a ghast during the
night. If you can keep your distances, they are slow and
can be put down. But close up? You're paralysed.
We drag them back, leaving the equipment we got off the
bandits. At first, we only had enough money to raise
Minsc but then we sold the bandits' gems -- we have
almost 500 gold _after_ raising Branwen! We're rich!
The next day we stay at the Nashkel inn. Dynaheir
insists I try to learn a spell from a magic scroll. This,
after failing twice herself. But I succeed! At some sort of
ball spell...
!
For the next week, we rove around town. Skeletons
attack us, blue men attack us, ogres attack us (we kill 1
then flee). Every time we return, we're a little wealthier
from their equipment and a little stronger ourselves. The
storekeep also pays for bandit scalps. (How does he know
which is a bandit's?)
It's been nearly a month since leaving Candlekeep. No
assassins have reached us this far south. Let's keep it
that way.
On an ogre leader, Minsc picks up this gigantic sword. It
looks unbreakable! (And believe you me, Minsc and
Branwen have broken their fare share of hammers and
maces on faces!)

Level ups!
