Antagonists You Love to Hate (spoilers)

rdarkenrdarken Member Posts: 660
I'm watching a playthrough of BG2 right now and it hit me how I was hoping he would kill Firkraag. It dawned on me how much I really hate that jerk, more than any other of the bad guys. (Although, only slightly more than I hate the Cowled Wizards.)

So... Who gets your blood going?

There's obviously way too many minor villains to list. I tried to pick the ones that stand out: Ones that have a storyline, a major part in the plot, or that screw you over in some way.

Well I haven't met some of those on the list yet cos I haven't finished my first BG 2 run yet, I'll just vote and stay away :D

But of those I have met, Irenicus easily tops the list by a long way.

He killed two of Charname's earliest companions and closest friends, tortured him and his beloved sister, abducted and abused her more to near insanity, and then tried to kill them all once he had no more use for them.

Irenicus is the embodiment of a totally selfish and heartless evil. He doesn't kill for enjoyment, or a greater purpose, he does it because it is convenient and it satisfies his personal goals.

Well my party is still in the Underdark, so I don't have the full picture yet, but for now, Charname REALLY wants to kill Irenicus, painfully, slowly, very very painfully...

Saemon cos you really can not kill him permanently, even though he deserves it thrice over.

Saemon because you must go with his schemes to get the best things.

You can kill Saemon with some mod assistance. The "improved continuity" component of the Oversight mod (http://www.gibberlings3.net/oversight/) prevents him from showing up in ToB if you kill him in SoA.

But then I also kind of like the idea that he's the guy who tends to get away with it.

    I never really liked Bodhi.
Nobody steals Imoen's soul and then screw around with me

In my opinion, Irenicus is one of the best villains in all of video games. His dialogue and behavior has fantastic writing and voice acting; his attitude is exactly right for what he's supposed to be. And he even has an element of "makes you think" once you finally find out his backstory.

I hated Sarevok for the whole 'plunging two nations into war for my own personal gain' thing and trying to have me killed.

I hated Irenicus for sucking out my soul, killing Khalid and traumatising Imoen.

But I hated, haaaaated Saemon goddamn Havarian for fucking me over every time we met. And myself for thinking "surely this time he'll be on the level" every time. And then he'd Dimension Door out.
The other two I could respect. Saemon, not so much. I'd wring that little bastard's head if I had the chance.

Sarevok and Irenicus both, but Serevok just a little more so... They're both dang awesome, but they must suffer for their crimes!

I try to kill Saemon every chance I get. I know he just comes back, but it feels good to see him explode into chunks a couple of times.

The way this scumbag screws you over and keeps coming back for more makes me think he's one of the devs' old D&D characters that he thinks is sooooo very awesome, but everybody else at the table hates him. Infuriating. That's the kind of character that I will happily knock down a peg or two with eight archers waiting around a corner with readied actions to fire on the first thing they see.

Gahhh! I need to go back and change my vote to Saemon!

So funny how a character who sort of helps you is more hated than all the antagonists of the series :) That's some mighty fine writing.

I personally really like Saemon, I think he is well written and does his job (to make charname trust him only to screw him over in the end and get a reaction from the player) extremely well, which can be seen by the results so far.

I personally hated Bodhi. She seemed a little unnecessary to the overall plot of the game, I didn't find her particularly interesting and being a vampire made fighting her in a pain in the butt (I hated fighting the vampires in the BG series... screw you level drain and domination!) I think a random deciever mook that was hired by Irenicus, and wasn't clearly and overtly evil in appearance would have been better. The addition of her as Jonaleth's sibling didn't really have any substantial effect on the plot. Since when Bodhi propositions you to join her side in the guild war you kinda know exactly what you're getting yourself into by siding with her. If Irenicus had someone less... uh, evil-looking trick you into joining that side you'd get a cool "Oh crap, what did I get myself into" type of moment when you realize it's a pack of evil vampires.

Saemon for his betrayals. The ability to (repeatedly) kill him makes up for it though.
  • rdarkenrdarken Member Posts: 660
I actually had no clue she was a vampire at first hehe

I know he's not really the most evil guy in the game, and really I consider it more important to stop the big bads. But Saemon is just sooooo frustrating, there's just no way to get rid of him!

How do you pronounce Saemon? Say-mon? See-mon? -_-

I need to yell his name in despair :u

It's closer to Say-mon. I think Aran Linvail actually speaks his name in the game, as in voiced out.

    It's probably not pronounced See-men...

I don't like Amelyssan because of how she manipulates everyone and Charname is too stupid to catch on while pretty much everyone else in the entirety of ToB is able to figure it out. That gets to me.

Dante put treachery in the lowest circle of Hell, because he thought of it as the worst of all sins, the most deliberate and the most calculated. According to Dante, there are four different types of treachery: betrayal of kindred, betrayal of country, betrayal of guests, and betrayal of benefactors.

Betrayers of benefactors is the lowest level of Hell, in which Satan himself is found. Dante saves this level for the worst sinners and it is called Judecca, named after Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. Here Dante finds Satan, Judas Iscariot, and Brutus & Cassius. In Dante's opinion these are the worst sinners of all.

I share the same opinion. That's why I think that Saemon's crimes are the worst.

Also, I'd like to help @typo_tilly . The best chance to undestand how his name is pronounced is to listen to Baldur's Gate 2 Chapter Four Introduction. The narrator clearly gives the spelling.
