North Korea summit is dead and buried, as predicted even amongst all the hoopla and praise Trump received at the time. The biggest popcorn fart in diplomatic history.

As it previously announced, North Korea blew up a nuclear test facility in the presence of foreign journalists but not any international inspectors. It's not the only such facility North Korea has, though, and it was believed to not actually be useful for their nuclear program anymore, making it an easy loss.

Trump later announced he was canceling his meeting with Kim Jong Un.

It also seems that Japan and South Korea weren't even informed beforehand about Trump's decision, and are now scrambling to figure out what happened and how to react.

By the way, those journalists are still in North Korea. Trump just cancelled the summit. They essentially have no protection if they want to detain them given this announcement. An absolute incompetent shitshow from jump street.

The New York Times has the broadest range of viewpoints I've seen; they have contributors by everyone from Ted Cruz and Glenn Beck (!) to Bernie Sanders. I've seen editorials ranging from "It's not terrorism if it's against Israel" to "It's not killing civilians if it's against Palestine," and more moderate viewpoints (which thankfully are far more common) in between,

    Editorials or op-eds?

I have edited my post to change "editorial" to "op-ed." Pretty big difference, and not something I'd like to confuse!

Honestly, I find news stories from all over the place (Twitter's main value is the links people post) and evaluate them individually. I trust foreign news sources like the BBC and The Guardian FAR more than any domestic equivalents, simply because there is such a whorish careerism that infects all branches of the US media. There is a overwhelming value placed on access, which requires them to sugarcoat what is going on with those they need access to.

I'd like to think it was just incompetence, but there's also a possibility that this reflects an intention to seek or create provocations. When Bolton said that Korea could follow the Libya model for denuclearization that could easily be written off as just an error - it was unsurprising though that the North Koreans reacted badly to that given what happened to Gaddafi. When only days later Pence repeated the reference to the use of the Libyan model the question of cock-up or conspiracy becomes a real debate.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Trump (or more likely someone close to him) had come to the conclusion that the proposed summit was going to end in disaster and the US would be better pulling the plug now. In order to save face it would then make sense to deliberately provoke the N. Koreans into making statements that could justify a cancellation. That actually seems like a pretty likely scenario to me.

It's stretching the conspiracy theory rather further, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the US are aiming to create an incident (such as the taking of hostages) that could justify military action. Trump has repeatedly said that N. Korea will not be allowed to keep nuclear weapons. If talks are no longer seen as a means to achieve that, then what's left ...

You know, we're in 2018 and I see around me, looking at leaders of many european, offspring and other countries and I think...

Damn, how did we get so many nutcases in power. I mean ok, there's Trump, obviously, Putin is also obvious, so is Erdogan. Netanyahu is damn worrying too. I'm not worried about the new Italian government though, there'll be a new one in a few months (come on man, that's Italy we're talking about here).

What went wrong here? It's like the most WTF leaders we had in decades. Makes me almost miss the Dubya, Bliar, Bonga Bonga Berlusconni, era... and well Putin was already there so I don't count him.

I wonder if it is a coincidence that as soon as the Nobel Peace Prize said that they were 1) investigating a fraudulent nomination for Trump and 2) Trump would not be considered for a Nobel Peace Prize that the American rhetoric and tone about the summit changed.

So I'm here in Brazil... the cost of diesel fuel has doubled since president Temer took over... truck drivers are on strike, blocking roads, supermarkets can't get food, fuel stations are running low with huge queues, some airports are running low on fuel... on the plus side.. you can get all you can eat pizza at the restaurant for £4 ($5) :p

I think that's a bit of selective memory right there - reminds me of when Clinton said, "I miss the Cold War."

Yeah they were terrible, but Bliar was clumsy, Dubya had bushisms and Berlu was a walking caricature. At least we could laugh. Trump doesn't even make me laugh, Putin, Bibi and Erdogan are even sinister.

On the one hand, Jack Johnson deserves to be pardoned. On the other hand, he's been dead for 80 years. If Trump wants to make a symbolic gesture towards African-Americans, he could start by commuting the sentences of people doing long prison sentences for nothing but drug possession charges.

The Cold War was a long time ago.

To give you a sense of how much things have changed way back then a Republican President "won" the Cold War when he told Mr. Gorbachev to tear down a wall. Now our Republican President was elected with help of Russians and wants to build a wall. We used to have a cold war between the KGB and the CIA, now the president adores a former KGB spymaster and attacks the CIA, FBI, and Justice Department on Twitter and wants to launch investigations into the FBI and do nothing about future Russian interference in our elections. We'll one party flipped that's for sure anyway.

The cold war never ended.USA and Russia might change their leader or name, but will always fight over influence and resources, indirectly.

North Korea's vice foreign minister has said that they are still willing to meet with the U.S. despite Trump's cancellation of his meeting with Kim Jong Un. I'm surprised this response would come so soon. Hopefully the North won't spin around on this one.

When you say African-Americans, do you mean Whites and Blacks from Africa? How about Jamaicans who happen to be Black? How about Europeans who happen to be Black? Can't leave them out. They where part of the slave trade too, especially Blacks from Portugal and the Middle East.

Poor Morgan. All because he stated that he wants to be Identified as a " American, who happens to be Black." He also has said that Black History IS American History and should be taught as such. Not just reserved to one Month out of the year.

That’s the problem with government power. It seems to always attract the worst of the worst.

Anyone else here tune in to alternate, independently owned media? I find it fairly refreshing. I’m always looking for decent independent news sources from “both sides” of the aisle. I get enough mainstream, corporate-generated news from CNN as it’s constantly playing in the break room at work.
