On the Nature of Spambots.

Since becoming a moderator I have become well aware of the presence of spambots on our forum, constantly trying to log on and pester us. What I do not understand so much about is the nature of these spambots and as such I have many questions about the pests.

What is a spambot? Are they man or are they machine? How do they work? Where do they come from? Who makes them? Why are there so many of them? Why do they speak in what can only be called gibberish? I know their goal is to advertise and make money via advertising, but for who? What kind of 'companies' use spambots? Does this method of advertising actually have a significant effect on increasing profit for whatever they advertise for? (I mean really, Who the hell would click on a ad and actually by something from a spambot?) Are they even legal? Are they basically just like computer viruses? Are they created with a malicious intent? Why are they so hard to stop? Why do some get through the spam filters while others don't?
