I'm still coming to terms with the idea that the Bard kits need buffing up to be on par with a vanilla bard, what crazy world did I wake to this morning!?

Meh. The Blade is still really powerful, and the Skald still has one of the best songs in the game from level 1 and onward. The vanilla's just the most adaptable, which is what its strength should be. If anything, the Bard kits are now actually balanced.
Just out of curiosity, why are there neither air elementals in IWD nor water elementals in BG? An obscure alchemical reference? (probably not....I already looked into that)
I guess it's just these games' thing. There are also pretty much no earth elementals in the first Neverwinter Nights.

But doesn't the Blade also have the bard song? I still wonder what they're going to do with that kit.
they're not going to do anything with it, it's going to be the same as in BG - one bad bard song. (edit: it will have a better spell progression though, i just remembered)
the blade will still be an ok kit for IWD, offensive spin lasts 24s so you still get to cast tenser's second and rush in for that quick kill.

Not strictly true. In BG the Blade gets a "remove fear" song, in IWD they get the +1 hit and damage song.
you can pick something that increases apr which will come in useful if you decide to cast tenser's.
there are a few items that do this, however since they are scarce it is quite likely that they will be reserved by your warriors.
as elminster said, blunt is better than anything else when it comes to hitting things in melee - enemies' armors are more vulnerable to it since most don't give AC modifiers to crushing (i don't know precisely how this manifests in IWD and whether it works consistently). there in fact is a certain blunt weapon that grants +1 apr i think so that might be an optimal choice.
it won't make much of a difference however, whatever you pick since you should probably focus on singing and casting (low and mid level debuffs are devastating so bard is very effective in support-caster role)
Great now I have an image of a DWing bard in my head, who only memorizes illusions and enchantments, and when he waits into combat (with his 2 clubs), he shouts "Let's go Clubbin"
i've always seen clubs as more low-key weapons most strongly associated with rogues so it's an image that is generally consistent with the archetype for me.

A real bard would name themselves Eric Clapton and start every battle with the opening guitar rift from Layla
(edit: it will have a better spell progression though, i just remembered)

Bards can be bad-ass!
Patrick Stewart is always epic, though.
"Thespian extraordinaire."
Oh! Is that what Silke says?
Halberds
Example: Halberd of Ibanez XH300
EDIT: You mean, she wasn't a Mexican extraordinaire (no racist)?!
Until then, a bow is nice.
