I am legitimately annoyed by this. I use and appreciate text emojis [ O_o -_- ect] to help display tone over text, I really hate the animated ones. They are far to loud, and I somebody put way to much though into them. They are also prone to overuse. They just look annoying.
I'm too a bit disappointed that ordinary : ) is not available - but you can always use space between the two symbols.
Also, ; ) works just fine.
I say: if we want to use simple symbols, we should just take them with a space instead of making an emoticon
Or you take the long way to circumvent the auto-smileys by using the character codes for ':' and ';'. For instance, :) becomes :) and ;) becomes ;) .

That is what I did for the first post. Alternatively, for an even longer method but saves on trying to remember the character code, any HTML tag with an attribute will break it up. The span tag is the best so you don't get other formatting as well. For example, <span style="">:</span>) becomes :). Or you could just use something like the old italics tag :<i></i>) for :)
I just had a thought... Wouldn't it be the most awesome thing ever if we had BG themed emoticons?! Like we could have Xan for sad or Alora for happy... Saemon could replace Trollface... The possibilities are almost endless!
