I think the funniest death I had in BG was when I commanded Keldorn to attack my badly injured M/T Elf so he would dispel the Confusion effect my PC with Carsomyr... But he made a critical hit and killed me.
The room with the wands mounted on the wall, well I forgot to grab the key to the lightning one and was too lazy to walk baco and grab it, so I was walking my party one by one around the trap. After getting Jaheria across, I went to click Imoen but miss clicked. Jaheria started her slow walk back through the trap. I attempted to click her again but missed sending a lightning bolt through her then me then the reload screen.
"That Red Dragon doesn't look so tough... My cavalier has a sword built for slaying dragons, and gear offering Fire Resistance, what could possibly go wrong!"
Technically, it got even dumber, as I retried the same ****ty plan over and over.

Oh yes, been there, done that. Everyone knocked on their arses & then I'm wondering exactly what it was that wiped out Charname even with a protection from death spell. Must. Use. Protection. From. Fire.
In the end I looked up the best solutions & they still don't work like a charm every time, all I can think is on playthroughs before this I was higher level than when I chose to face the dragon as it seemed relatively easy. This time even hit with two lower resistance spells it took a whole load of summonsed allies, piercing bolts & arrows and magic-missiles-of-cheese to do him in. Same goes for mindflayers, though Melf's minute meteors work exceptionally well on them, I've found.

Oh yes! We have a winner, ladies & gentlemen, @CrevsDaak, this post, the forum & the internet are all yours. Play nice with them. Not just an LOL from me but a genuine snortlaugh. Still chuckling. ;-D

Heh, I had played BG1 insessently, beaten IWD, and was steamrolling BG2, then ran straight into Big Red. Had to develop new tactics to actually win the damn fight, and had to off and level up. That was my first big sidequest of the game, and until the final boss, its very beatable in vanilla with a pretty low level party, and without metagaming.
But Firkrag was an entirely new beast, with abilities far beyond what I was used to. Now in vanilla he's a speedbump generally, but underestimate a dragon and things get very ugly very quickly!
Mindflayers were actually not that bad for me, except I had cheesed to keep my old Bhaalspawn powers instead of Slayer... so that was a nasty shock! how do I get more than 25 strength?! Lol, had to use ol' Dialup web to find a solution. Yikes, that was slow.
You guys know that Firkraag and Saladrex cast a spell called "Lower Fire Resistance", right?
Yes, and my 'totally uber fire immune cavalier!!' found that out quite painfully.
Just remembered, I did have an issue my first time vs Mind Flayers... my PC was a Half-orc that dump-stated Int and Charisma... I didn't like rerolling for long, so finding myself one-shoted was a bit of a surprise. Korgan and summons had to carry the day that playthrough.
I find that an improved bard song can really be an illithid stopper. The immunity to stun kinda cripples them as they have pretty mediocre thac0 and they usually only hit on a critical without the automatic hit their stun usually gives them.

Korgan enraged really tears through them pretty well too. High AC and stun protection are pretty much win conditions vs mindflayers. Iirc, Deathblow oneshots them, right? Or does it have to be the greater one? Mind you, only a solo Fighter would ever consider taking that in my experience.
In one of my very first playthroughs (around year 2000) I didn't know how to remove traps. On the 3rd level of Nashkel mines at the exit, those several traps would always kill me. So, being clever as I was, I figured that I can outrun those magic missiles since there's a loading screen to the next area and surely those won't "transfer" over. It was a classic "Yes!" after I saw loading screen followed by "Noo!" after my character entered the area and immediately died.
One of my favorite tactical encounters with a Level 3-4 party in BG usually occurs in my playthroughs immediately before Minsc's Quest to rescue Dynaheir or on the way back to Nashkel with Dynaheir as a 6th party member. It is the Most Dangerous Game encounter with Sendai, the haughty aristocrat from one of the leading families of Amn and her murderous friends, Delgod and Alexander.
Recently I goofed up big-time while headed back to Nashkel with a Level 4 Dynaheir, Minsc, Kivan, Branwen, Imoen [dualled] and a 3-2-3 FMT Charname.
For reasons of Stealth, Charname was supposed to charge Alexander while Branwen faced-off with Delgod and Minsc meleed with Sendai. Note: We had charmed Delgod beforehand and postitioned him immediately adjacent to the party before advancing with Minsc to trigger the opening dialogue. After the dialogue, Delgod was no longer charmed.
Anyhow, I do not recall the details exactly but it seemed the battle might not be going quite like I planned, so I hurriedly decided that having Dynaheir cast Stinking Cloud would stabilize the situation long enough with Sendai and Alexander for Kivan to help Branwen subdue Delgod. No Biggie!!
Unfortunately, as the Stinking Cloud resolved, Alexander was unaffected long enough to hit Charname with a Poison Arrow. Ooops!. So, there she was ~ Unconscious, unable to use her Antidote and, of course, Branwen could not get anywhere close to her with Slow Poison.....Aaarrggh!!
@Tresset: Very disappointing. We can always use an easier way to kill Mind Flayers. I'd heard Death Spell worked well, and Mind Flayers do have the HD to be vulnerable to it, but I've never tested it.
Deathblow and Greater both work ranged, right? How many HP do Beholders and illithids have? I never used either version of Deathblow, but for a solo warrior, that might be a handy HLA actually. Illithids never stop being annoying for a solo warrior, same with Beholders.
@DreadKhan: Rovala and Poppy both could take down an entire room of Mind Flayers with a casting of Greater Deathblow. But in SCS2, you can't rest in the Underdark Mind Flayer lair, so I'd only have so many castings... which is not many.
Seeing a chromatic orb heading to my pc, geniusly checking his stats and saying proudly 'my base save vs spell is 8. Even if I roll a 2, with +6 bonus, I will surely save!'
Que watching the floating spirit animation rising from my pc and the death movie. In disbelief.
@Eadwyn_G8keeper I remember having many problems with that location especially with Sendai and her company. Some years ago when I was experimenting with Algernon's cloak I charmed Albert in the same area. I won't spoil this for anyone, but I recommend trying this for yourself and see how this "boy" can handle himself in a battle.
Gibs flying everywhere. I'll post an old screenshot later with Albert critically hitting Delgod for 76 damage.
I was on my way to rescue Dynahier and was only level 2, i got to that xvart village where they summon the Grizzly bear, she (the bear) was killing xvarts so i ignored her. When she started attacking my party it did a surprising amount of damage, i berserked Minsc without hesitation so that he would stop the beast. His love of animals must of overpowered his rage because he turned around and attacked my CHARNAME instead, who was a level 2 swashbuckler... with 16 hp. Killed me in one hit :P
I've finally found that screenshot with Albert and was a bit off with the damage, but here it is:
Its 78 instead of 76. Trafienie krytyczne = Critical hit Obrażenia = Damage taken Śmierć = Death
The screenshot is from around 2005, when I've been using some mods, but they didn't affect Albert himself. He's that strong even in the original and is able to take on Drizzt 1v1 melee (I've tried that several times).

yes, they are all shameless reposts

But Shank? Unstoppable.
Death Spell on Mind Flayers. I hear that always takes them down.
