Why Minsc is so popular?

Hello everyone! Sorry for my bad English. Please, tell me, why Minsc is so popular? I was on some forums and he was very recommended as member of party. But why???
He have only 71 character ability point. It is very low. For example, Imoen have 87, Kagain have 82, Ajantis - 88.
He have two slots for quick items (it's not a major minus).
He is ranger, not a fighter. That mean, he can have only two weapon points.
His Berserk ability is very dangerous if you have more than one melee fighter. I had another melee fighter and he always left the fights wounded not by enemies, but by Minsc.
Tell me please, why so many people like him? Only for high strength?

And Minsc as a main source of melee dmg only held up until you found the str tome or the orge gloves and now with Dorn being a thing, Minsc's usefulness has taken another hit.
So all in all Minsc is not the best choice for a power gaming playthrough, he is by no means a bad pick, just not a great one.
But in his defense is probably one of my favorite NPC's, what the ranger lacks in skill and wits, he makes up 10 fold in just being fun, his banter adds so much to the games "get the bg1 NPC project if you haven't already". Having Minsc around just for the giggles, is more than enough reason to take him along.
Also the man brings miniature giant space hamster to the table, what more could you want?
Minsc is a unique character in the first place. He's very different from other characters in computer games. He's voiced over wonderfully well and almost all his phrases have become legendary.
BG2? That's a different matter. From him and the Pirate Lord, to his conversations with Jan Jansen...that is where he really shines.
Also if you have not tried UB his quest is funny too. Linear but still great.
I don't understand what is un/augmentation stats.
And one more question. Is "hide in shadows" usefull for rangers? I know, it gives backstab damage for thieves, but what it give to rangers?
"Augmentation" is referring to the use of magic items to boost stats. These items are in limited supply, so if you have several characters with, for example, low Dexterity, you have to pick one to give the Dex-boosting item. With 18/93, 16, 16 (in BG2), Minsc doesn't really need any of these items, so they can go to other characters who need them.
It is kind of funny how over-the-top character stats are in CRPGs. In most PnP games I played, Minsc's BG1 stats would be considered phenomenal (bonuses in all three stats that matter to warriors). In a CRPG, his stats are "meh".
In BG2, as weird as it may seem, he helps you keep both feet on the ground.
There is also something childish we all love.
Me, personally, I liked him my first few runs, but he eventually got one-dimensional. Yes, a low-WIS ranger who talks to hamsters and fights FOR JUSTICE is unique, but there's not much more to him than that, and eventually it grows old.
(No offense to anyone who likes Minsc)
In my very first playthrough of BG1, I had picked up Imoen (ofc), then Xzar & Montaron, and then Khalid & Jaheira. After the FAI, I made my way directly to Nashkel where I met Minsc. He needed help with something and wanted to join the group, and I let him but realized I couldn't keep him because I had no room, so I had drop him.
I made my way to the mines and right in the middle of the dungeon, the Zhents and Harpers got into a fight. Khalid & Jaheira won and re-joined, but then I was down two party members. I managed to make my way through the dungeon (note I hadn't done very many, if any side quests, and so was quite low leveled), picked up Xan and eventually got back to Nashkel.
I remembered Minsc as I walked by and thought, oh hey I'm down a party member and this guy wanted to join, seems like a good time to let him in... Which I did. I fought Haer'Dalis...erm... I mean Nimbul and rested up at the inn for a few days. Well Minsc wigged out on me and started to kill Imoen and Xan and all the rest of my badly wounded party because I was taking too long to rescue Dynaheir!
I had to put him down and picked up Branwen as a replacement, which was fine as Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Xan, and Branwen is a very solid lineup imo.
That whole experience left me with a bad impression of Minsc however. It wasn't until BG2 that I started to like him again. He's one of my favorite characters now, but we had a rocky start.
In other words, Minsc is not popular with me.
*sigh* Anyway. End rant. Minsc is cool. He's funny and he carries all the things you can't.
When you've got another character tanking, Minsc is a great damage dealer.
If he's your one fighter, he looks like crap compared to Kagain, if he were your one fighter.
People also tend to forget that Kivan is far more versatile than Minsc. He's quite a bit better at range, and not as far behind in close range as people tend to make it out to be. He also can actually stand being targeted with his 17 Dexterity, unlike Minsc with his 15 that leaves him kind of vulnerable. That's a 10% higher chance of getting hit … Fairly likely.
From a role-playing standpoint:
I have no idea. Minsc is f*&%ing annoying in Baldur's Gate 1. He's actually halfway amusing and feels like a legitimate hero in Baldur's Gate II.
Its because Minsc and Boo stand ready.
My favorite line in any game, ever.
Also from a roleplay perspective, having him in your party makes a lot more sense if you plan to transition from BG1 to BG2, though I wont give any spoilers away beyond that.
