Through life I gain wisdom, through death I gain power, through undeath I transcend these mortal bindings! I shall arise and exult with the powers of Necromancy!

Edit: Unfortunately I never play humans so all my elfy elf Necromancers are Clerics QQ

How could you forget the master races chosen specialty of illusion?

Wiiiiild mage. The best generalists, that can cast 10th level spells from a 1st level slot (with the added expectation of an hilarious surprise to amuse one and all)

Otherwise illusionist or enchanter. For blowing things up there are wands.

Necromancers are cool but I prefer clerics, since they can destroy/control undead all day long.

I miss the previous thread. I had the stupidest line about Diviners. I was proud of that line.

Anyway, the main reason I like Diviners is actually just the thematic aspect. In everyday life, being able to see the future would be the most useful thing. The name is cool, too.

No fighter/mage? Spell swords have always been my favorites.
But Sorcerers are pretty good too. Yes they are very strong mechanically, but I like them more roll play wise. A being possessing blood that's not of the mundane, capable of shaping the weave around them through natural talent alone, is just far more interesting that a book learned mage.

Sorc is the one I use most.

Sorcerers in vanilla BG. Although I prefer Diviners using @subtledoctor excellent Scales of Balance mod.

You can build some very good characters by dual-classing into (plain) Mage after gaining a few levels of some other class, and I've plenty of time for those. I've also had a lot of fun with multi-classed part-Mages - not great as your primary arcane caster because they don't reach such high Mage levels, but excellent support casters who can also fight/steal/heal/whatever.

However, since we're here offered only the option of a pure arcane caster with no levels of anything else, then ... yeah, Sorcerer. If you've chosen the right selection of spells, a Sorcerer is like having a win-button.

PSSHHTT! You sorcerers and you're innate talent! We specialist worked hard to get where we are then you all come prancing in here with your "spontaneous spellcasting" and your "no forbidden school" shenanigans and now everyone's raving about how much cooler you are! HARUMPH!. . .

Though I am a fan of sorcerers of the Fey and Sylvan Bloodline in Pathfinder. . .
Cool little flavor stuffs and even Faerie wings for the Sylvan Bloodline- I MEAN I WON'T BE TEMPTED BY YOUR MISCHIEVOUS WAYS!

First of all @Onestep I do enjoy having a new poll guy! Thanks for making this

"A little fire and lightning should liven things up!" I love me the old classic Harry Dresden type wizard. Nothing screams badass fantasy like someone throwing a fireball or shooting magical missiles out of their fingers.

In real life, divination would be the coolest... "she loves me, she loves me not" alone would have made high school much more interesting!

Amusingly … Necromancers and then Illusionists, even though they're "opposites" I guess. Kind of a depressing thought, isn't it? Death is no illusion! Death is the only reality there is! Is that what they were trying to say? =P

I never like playing as a mage in RPGs in general, but I enjoy having them in my party. Last year however, I completed BG1 with a mage. I couldn't decide which school to choose, so I rolled a die and the result was the general mage. That playthrough was a pain sometimes, but I must admit that I enjoyed it overall and I'm glad that I picked that class. I'm always curious about all the spells and I often used those that are usually considered as weak e.g. Chill Touch.

Playing as a mage was easy compared to my ongoing playthrough as a bard, ugh.

Sorcs are better, but I prefer generalists RP-wise. Never liked the thought of losing out on some spells and since you don't get better spell levels (harder saves) for being a specialist in BG.

I like the idea of a child of Bhaal having innate magical abilities that are more instinctual than trained.

On the other hand, instead of cherry-picking which spells I want, maybe for role-playing purposes I should let a roll of the dice decide which spells I get at start and each level-up!

    Just kidding. Necromancers.

I like vanilla mages because it is a good feeling to have access to all kinds of magic, and even mold your own personality according to spell choices.
I also like illusionists because I feel that they are the kind of people who would try to win battles through deceit and persuasion, and if anything goes wrong they would simply turn invisible and get the hell out.

Transmutation... Time and matter are under my control. If only i could cast slow on myself and haste on my favourite game (bg), i could play it 4 times as often.

Illusionist. So powerful they had to give them 3 opposed school in PnP just to try and balance their sheer awesomeness.

The option is there, it is just magically shielded from those of unworthy eyes.

But my vote goes to the Bard.

Wild mage! Because in BG1 I had a cow kill half of Nashkel, which led to a flaming fist ambush ending my no reload playthrough. It was awesome.

And at high levels every lvl1 spell turns into horrid wiltering, which is insane!

I love me some enchanter, because I like the way their magic is based on controlling others. Seems very lawful, even though elves can be them...

Can I. Change my vote to wild mage?
