@Ward well some of the romance shut down options can get pretty harsh in BG2, I'm sure that telling a character that I'm not interested in that kind of thing, however it's worded would stop the romance in its tracks and have it never be brought up again.
You mean I have to tell a gay virtual NPC I'm not interested every single game? That will get annoying. I guess now they have to add 'straight/bi/gay' to CC so it works out.
@AurenRavidal Real-life bisexuals do exist, though, so i find the first part of your post head-scratching. I agree with not changing the sexuality of already-existing NPCs- but many of them don't have an "established" sexuality. For many of them, there is nothing that definitively establishes their sexuality one way or another. Take Imoen- she never talks about men she likes, or women, either. Sexuality wise, that's a null prospect. We don't know one way or another. Straight people can assume she's straight, gay people can assume she's gay/lesbian and bisexual people can imagine she goes both ways. There are few NPCs we can establish as one way or another-Keldorn and Kivan were married. Khalid and Jaheira are/were married. Cernd at least had a child with a woman. Coran is an inveterate womanizer. Eldoth, while seducing woman, seems to love himself the most. Skie loves Eldoth. Sarevok loved Tamoko. But even Nalia, who was betrothed, well, she doesn't seem to love or be attracted to. Everyone else is up in the air.
@TenTaiba Yes correct. Besides who is going to take Anomen anyway? If Dorn is gay I'll be annoyed because one of the strongest meatwalls is going to hit on me. Viconia will be turned off.
@NancyButtPeach Nothing says you have to play a homosexual romance. It's there for the people who want it, like it and appreciate it. Nowhere does it say that everyone has to play or experience it. I won't be playing it, myself. But I have no objection to it being there.
Right! So then you don't use that NPC omg oh noes! so what? I boot Jaheira cause I don't like her. If you don't like to have characters in your party based on their sexuality that's YOUR option, but that doesn't mean that there's any reason for that option to not exist at all.
@TenYaiba I didn't say I choose based on their sexuality, I could not care less. You clearly haven't read my posts. But I think it's fair enough if we don't want uncomfortable and unnecessary 'break it to you slow' crap.
Here's an idea, put an off/on switch for romances completely.
Romance prospects like you more if you reject others. @Ward :P besides If you've never been hit on by the sex you don't prefer in your life you haven't hung around the right areas.
@TenYaiba What kind of simplistic teenage idea is that? You remind me of a kid who said to me years ago "If you never get drunk and wind up regretting it, you'll never learn not to do it".
WHAT THE HELL!? I just won't do it at all! For the record I have been hit on by gay people before and it's very uncomforting.
@ Ward I didn't mean to offend you. and I wasn't targeting you specifically, but Some people will chose party members based on their sexuality, I'm certain of it. I didn't mean to paint you with that brush. Only to illustrate that it's the player's choice to assemble their party as they see fit.
@TenYaiba I've been insulted by professionals, don't worry. I just don't think it's fair that X player has to go through Y dialogue just to have somebody in their party. Same with Anomen for the ladies I guess.
@Ward In any case, fending off advances is just a part of BG2, and besides, if you're actively perusing a romance it won't come up at all. You can grab a character for a romance pretty early. No Polygamy in Baldur's Gate :P
Sounds like we'll be having some nice DLC NPC(s) to BG:EE instead of having to wait until BG2:EE.
I hope not. Late arrival DLC characters are such a bad idea. Why were Shayle the Golem (Dragon Age: Origins) and Javik the *SPOILER* (Mass Effect 3) the first DLC to be released in their respective games, soon after, almost immediately after, the game's release? Because character DLC is something that has to be there before you've finished the game, or you went through most of it, anyway. If you want to enjoy the game (and if you want to sell the DLC), the new character has to be available fairly early.
@LadyRhian I probably should've been more clear in my post. My objection is in how bisexual npcs have been handled by game writers in the past, which typically makes them seem contrived. I just think that a proper romance should do more than alter gender-related pronouns in regards to dialogue. Sky from Jade Empire's a good example of this. He's got a kid and yet the designers decided to make him bisexual just to open up more romance options for players. Now take someone like Veronica Santangelo from Fallout: New Vegas. She's a lesbian and because of Obsidian actually giving her a more concrete sexual identity, it actually makes for a more interesting backstory (she's had a failed romance in the Brotherhood of Steel because they frown on relationships that don't support procreation).
Ultimately this matters less to me than most features, since I won't actually be playing any gay romances now or ever, but I just think that if they're going to implement them, they should do it right. *shrugs*
@AurenRavidel Oh, that, I can get behind completely. Typical ways out also include making the bisexual character chase anything and everything or being easier than the easy button to get into bed. Hey, I want a character capable of a serious relationship, not one that chases everything on two legs or has no problem falling madly in bed with everyone. You're right- it should be done right.
@NancyButtpeach Who put you in charge of what is and isn't healthy for other people? You worry about you and yours and leave others alone. At least have the common decency to state 'in my opinion' before assigning yourself arbiter and judge of morality. I respect and will defend your right to your opinion, but have the right to expect that you exercise the same respect toward others.
If this rant gets me in trouble, I do apologize to the community. However, I sense that it is long overdue in this case.
@reedmilfam No point in getting offended. His opinion has some truth in it but why seek out and actively be offended by everybody who says that kind of thing?
The truth in it is society thinks we have to embrace gay as a lifestyle, that is just bullshit. Aside from that his comment has no value so why care?
@reedmilfam People aren't asking for tolerance as far as I'm concerned. I don't believe this whole 'progressive equality' thing is about tolerance, it's about a group of people wanting to feel like they're being put upon when they actually aren't.
I see little intolerance anymore, there's just some people out there who want more.
@TenYaiba Sorry, you're right actually man. I just wish people would stop making everything a big deal and get on with their lives. There are far more important things, like the corporate bastards and the government and the public health system. :P
Oh no... not politics... not here... I want a good relationship in a videogame! The LAST THING ON MY LIST is to argue about real life! I want to shoot fireballs and lightning bolts from my fingers!
@TenYaiba I don't know. We should talk about the Thieves Guild and the Vampires with the problems caused by Amnish aggression and the Sword Coast's instabilities! Politics are important.
Comments
@TenYaiba Then we are like "this guy is gay? naah can't be. -talk some more- THIS DUDE IS GAY!! - out of the party!-

I don't trust the Harpers. Down with the Harpers!
