Nah, backups were a thing ever since the early days of the floppy disk some 40 years ago.
Here's a fun activity!
Walk into your closest big box electronics store, find the 20's something kid working in the computer accessories area and ask if he has any external A Drives for sale.
Although I guess IWD2:EE source code would have probably been burnt onto a CD, which if I recall correctly, stands for clutter discs. They use to sell blank ones by the 100s.
Good luck going through the 1000s of them and their illegible labeling to see if the code is stored on one of them and even if you do luck out and the source code was on one of those, chances are, the clutter disc is now scratched to he'll and unreadable.
Best to say the code is lost and save the man hours actually looking for it.

Or even better: nevertheless force him to search through all of them, file them into an excel document in chronological order. And let him triple check each one's content to make absolutely sure he's holding a grudge against you.

Is this some twisted kind of suicide attempt?
Sounds like "new boss comes in and asserts his unearned authority" to me.
Why would they? I bet that all custom content would need to be updated either way. This was the case with the Infinity Engine EE's and non EE mods. And would be most likely the case with any Aurora EE's as well. Maybe they'd publish a "How To Do It Yourself" tutorial so that the communities are able to make their PW's compatible. But that's probably it. I wouldn't count on anything else officially on beamdog's side.
Yeah, ok... let's screw over thousands of players. Cool. If they're smart, Beamdog won't touch NWN1/2.
looks like there's barely 100 people playing, sorry bud lol

*Sees 100 people playing, thinks only 100 people ever play.*

While that would be nice to what is still a small segment of the CRPG player base....its just simply not how for profit companies work. I understand the sentiment, I do. BIOWARE/ATARII/Obsidian/whoever else created and owned/sold the rights to those IPs(intellectual properties in this case) don't owe those hundreds (for arguments sake, lets say thousands) of people ANYTHING at this point, nor does Beamdog. I remember when the official servers were shut down for them and I lost the Forgotten Realms of Aber Toril NWN2 player world i was apart of as a result. It sucked, but these are companies, not charities.
I would welcome NWN1/2EE....I tried, but couldn't get into NWN do to UI (sacrilegious, I know), graphics, and party limitations. I did enjoy NWN2 even if the mechanics did not all work correctly and some other issues. But if the BG series EEs show us anything, Beamdog is not shy about engaging the modding community. Keldrin, Roguenight, Ossian Studios (been a long while & cant remember many off the top of my head) would more than likely be reached out to for input or possibly positions. These games could use a good polishing, well original NWN could for sure. People HATED the idea of EEs and said mods were just better and the EEs would would only fracture the community. I dare say the BG community is stronger/larger now than it has been in a decade or more BECAUSE of the EEs. Regardless of your opinion of the EEs/new content/Sod you must realize this is a win and a boon of anyone that still enjoys the games. PWs will adapt, some will die, new ones will be created- I'm guess many new ones as casual gamers like myself that don't have the time to figure out the technical hurdles of mods will come back/try them out.. Its the nature of progress/business. Asking a company to forgo the opportunity simply out of the kindness of theer hearts not to upset a couple thousand people, when they can turn a profit and the gratitude of many times more people (cuz if they don't think they can get a GREAT many more to buy the product, then they wouldn't do it in the 1st place) is rather selfish/silly/absurd to be honest. I'm guessing they will can even do what they can to support the existing PWS and make the transition as smooth as possible if they created these EEs.
I'm not sure I want 5e D&D for my gaming, I honestly don't know much about it, but as a new franchise, it would only make sense and prolly be a requirement for WoTC as it it cross promotional. I am definitely ready for a whole new adventure in the Forgotten Realms- rather it is visiting Kara-tur or revisiting the Dales. I would LOVE that game to based in the same era as the BG series as with the spell plague & time leap since 2e-3.5e- the FR setting has little appeal left to me. But I'm older and have the original 2 grey source books for FR from AD&D. I understand that WoTC is for profit (even if I think they ridiculously push those limits with the rapid change in editions with zero support for older material). Have to be realistic in expectations.
No, I think if Beamdog is entrusted with a new CRPG game for AD&D it would have to fit with the current business model. That said, the real question is: Can they pull it off? I tried and found little taste for the 2 current D&D MMORPGs (although the older one was okay). Too me the D&D CRPG footprint seems to be at a stagnated, all time low for the franchise. Buried by an avalanche of competition, some of it of great quality. Can they write a story and entwine the rules well enough to recapture the magic of Baldur's Gate/IWD games? That's a tall order, but D&D is a sleeping giant that can come back and dominate the market if the game is even pretty good. Finally playing PoE this past couple weeks a bit & I am not blown away by it. While a great story, to me, it is missing sooo much of the tactical combat element that make the BG games so great. Say what you like, but I would like some examples of CRPGs that offered better/more varied combat and ways to beat the game. The system was a masterpiece simply because of its surface level simplicity that is how damage & time mechanics work, but underlying depth that can be discovered to exploit it in new & completely different ways. Intuitive? Not at all, but I am not intimidated by games that require me to think rather than press buttons and have something cool happen(sigh, Dragon Age had such potential). The idea that every character class be equal to one another at every stage of the game is the horrible concept that has invaded and largely ruined RPGS IN MY ever so humble OPINION. Whatever they do, if its a new game, I just hope they study and understand all the elements that made the BG games great. People don't replay the games dozens of times just cuz its a cool story and different NPCS ever so slightly add to it.
Who knows, 10 years from now, I might view 5e and current realms lore as the epitome of D&D. Will take a game that is worth my precious time investment to determine if so.
here's hoping they can restore D&D to the top of the pile, if they are indeed working on the next D&D CRPG franchise. Make it great & make it yours and forget about trying to make the next Baldur's Gate & just make a great D&D game.

I think you are missing a key point: those people aren't paying any money. So it doesn't matter how many there are, there is no economic value in supporting them.

Why would an EE screw over thousands of players ??? Those players who already have a running version of the original, don't need the EE to play their existing game.

Emotional distress; the mere existance of a [subject of devotion] in their mind imperfect [derivation] causes physical pain.
It's like Star Wars; the originals will never be the same due to the tackiness of the prequels. You can pretend they don't exist... but... it still gets to you!!! Curses, now you brought a tear to a grown mans eye, just by reminding me...
Prequels? I am more upset about the remaster where Han did not shoot first anymore! And adding stupid dinosaurs everywhere.... or unnecessarily cgi-ing jabba...
Anyway i hope they just make a 5th edition forgotten realms game in isometric style.

Beyond solo shooting first for me it was the scenes at the end of the movie showing all these planets celebrating. Like I assume Naboo or whatever is still under the command of some Imperial Governor or something. I get the emperor is dead, but the empire (at least administratively) still exists on some level.
Anyway i hope they just make a 5th edition forgotten realms game in isometric style.
I don't care if it's isometric or not, but I really would rather they focus on 5E than trying to rebalance/fix things in NWN1/2 EEs. Yes, those games could, by some people's definition, need some love*; but I'd rather Beamdog spend their limited resources on a 5E game.
A spiritual successor to NWN would be nice with 5e rules. A toolset to create custom content packaged with a campaign written by David Gaider? TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY!
Once that is released, they can "EE" the official NWN campaigns into the new game as a DLC.
Dont call it Neverwinter though. That name is so saturated with games now it gets hard to keep track. Call it "Night Spirits of Winter's End" or something.

How about ''Post-twilight hours of un-eventual cold season''?
If Beamdog do not intend to do the sensible thing and polish Arcanum, I vote for a Spell Jammer game. In 5E, why not? But just take the basic concepts of Spell Jammer and throw the rulebook in the rubbish bin where it belongs, take a dump on top, dip it in lava, and send it as toxic waste for disposal, storing it next to the nuclear waste and forget about it for the next 100 000 years.
