@Fighting_Ferret Apparently? Wolves. Lots and lots of wolves.
  • LadyRhianLadyRhian Member Posts: 14,694
Oh, and did I mention really big WOLVES?
  • LadyRhianLadyRhian Member Posts: 14,694
@Rufus_hobart These are larger than man-sized, so they were probably not flesh to stone-d humans. Just statues, but still...

DM: Considering the character you are playing, I can only imagine!

Alora is going to keep looking out for Wolves (especially dire and were kinds of wolves) as she carries on down the path in her cloak. Can she see anything up ahead?
  • LadyRhianLadyRhian Member Posts: 14,694
More road, and that's about it. There is also marks where it looks like something... or someone... was dragged into the trees.
  • Permidion_StarkPermidion_Stark Member Posts: 4,861
I'll wait to see if Kivan or Valygar can tell who was dragged and who was doing the dragging then I will creep into the woods following the track as best I can.
  • Fighting_FerretFighting_Ferret Member Posts: 229
Not bears, Alora. But there was a large number of abnormally large wolves... and the letter states an evil inflicted by a wound... I fear that we may be up against a group of werewolves. Being daylight we should be safe from a large pack of them, but be wary, one may be a natural werewolf like our friend, Cernd, and we have no way of knowing who may be a werewolf.

I'll look closer at the spot were something/someone was dragged off the road. Valygar ,will you accompany me in this task?
  • rufus_hobartrufus_hobart Member Posts: 490
no way of knowing? well then...any of us could also be harboring these creatures within us, if you be correct? *peers about suspiciously* if there be a half-sized one creeping about it could well be Alora! *points accusingly* or if you see one with suspiciously well groomed and even painted claws i would suspect that vain thief over yonder!
  • Permidion_StarkPermidion_Stark Member Posts: 4,861
Alora is pretty sure she is not a werewolf. But is starting to suspect Branwen might be a were jackass ...

Some way into the woods, Valygar and Kivan find a dead body lying half-concealed in the underbrush. He looks to be a peasant, and wolf paw tracks as large as your clenched fist surround the body. His clothes are ripped, torn and bloody, and he holds an envelope in one clenched fist.

You got it. I'll follow your lead. If anything suspicious is detected, I will go into stealth mode.

he's been killed on the way to the post office. We should read the letter to see what it says.

@ladyrhian can we determine a time frame the tracks were left and/or which way they lead?

Also, I'll take the envelope and examine the body.

    @LadyRhian

Yeah, so what are my base thieving skills before adding any points including dex bonus?
  • LadyRhianLadyRhian Member Posts: 14,694
Oh, sorry! Base scores at 18 Dex are Pick Pockets 25%, Open Locks 25%, Find/Remove Traps 10%, Move Silently 20%, Hide in Shadows 15%, Detect Noise 15%, Climb Walls 60% and Read Languages 0%
  • LadyRhianLadyRhian Member Posts: 14,694
@Fighting_Ferret You can't read the letter in the woods. The body has been dead about a week. And given the claw marks and bites, it looks as though he was killed by Wolves. Large ones.

Why can't we read the letter? Is it too dark?

  • Fighting_FerretFighting_Ferret Member Posts: 229
OK, I shall return to the group and attempt to read the letter there and let them know that the body/tracks are a week old.
  • Awong124Awong124 Member Posts: 2,642
Thank you. So I have 300 points to distribute. I will put 80 into Move Silently, 85 into Hide in Shadows, 60 into Open Locks, and 75 into Find/Remove Traps.

    So overall:
Pick Pockets 25%, Open Locks 85%, Find/Remove Traps 85%, Move Silently 100%, Hide in Shadows 100%, Detect Noise 15%, Climb Walls 60% and Read Languages 0%
  • Awong124Awong124 Member Posts: 2,642
Also, if we get max HP I should have 63hp instead of 56hp.
  • LadyRhianLadyRhian Member Posts: 14,694
Yes, it's too dark in the woods to read the words.

The letter is dated a week ago.

Hail thee of might and valor:
I, the Burgomeister of Barovia, send you honor- with despair.
My adopted daughter, the fair Ireena, has been these past nights bitten by a creature calling its race "vampyr". For over 400 years he has drained this land of the life's blood of its people. Now, my dear Ireena languishes and dies from an unholy wound caused by this vile beast. Yet, I fear, too, that the creature has some more cunning plan in mind. He has become too powerful to be fought any longer.
So I say to you, give us up for dead and encircle this land with the symbols of good. Let holy men call upon their power that the evil one may be contained within the walls of weeping Barovia. Leave our sorrows to our graves, and save the world from this evil fate of ours.
There is much wealth entrapped within this community. Return for your reward after we are departed for a better life.

    Kolyan Indirovich,
    Burgomeister

The writing is *not* the same as on the letter which led you here. It's much more shaky and halting, for one thing. But it looks like an entirely different hand wrote the letter.
