Looking for game suggestions

Greetings everyone!

I am in desperate need of your expertise :)

Over the years I have played quite a few RPG's and I've recently realized what my favorite style of is - dialogue heavy and with satisfying combat. I almost always like to play smooth talking selfish and somewhat kind characters. And as boring as it may be, I only enjoy playing humans.

So basically I am looking for games with the following criteria:

- needs to have lots of good dialogue
- ideally has cool companions
- at least decent combat

And to make it clearer what kind of stuff I am looking for, here is the stuff I've already tried:

- Baldur's Gate I (unsatisfying; the story and combat were good but way too shallow when it comes to dialogue)
- Baldur's Gate II (satisfying; great dialogue, combat, companions, awesome setting)
- Neverwinter Nights (unsatisfying; great combat, not even remotely enough depth)
- Planescape Torment (somewhat satisfying; too fantastic for me, not enough combat, great dialogue though)
- Morrowind (unsatisfying; great world but hated the combat and not enough dialogue)
- Kotor I (satisfying; great dialogue, combat, companions, very cool setting)
- Witcher I (somewhat satisfying; good dialogue, cool choices, didn't like the main character though)
- Dragon Age Origins (satisfying; great dialogue, combat, companions, acceptable setting)

Thank you all for your upcoming suggestions :)

Honestly, very few games do both exceptionally well. You're gonna want to try KOTOR 2 for sure, just make sure you install the Fan Patch that fills in the gaps left by it's truncated development time. Witcher 3 is already recognized as a stunning game. But if you don't like Geralt, that's gonna be a tough sell, as you would be with him for nearly 150+ hours. I'd try Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity or Torment: Tides of Numenera. All use the same engine, Tyranny especially focused on dialogue and character choice. Fallout: New Vegas has some really good quest and faction systems. Gothic 1 and 2 have incredibly janky and difficult combat but amazingly crafted self-contained worlds. Neverwinter Nights 2's Mask of the Betrayer Expansion may be up your alley as well. Possibly Mass Effect 1 and 2. But that's about all I can think of in your specific wheelhouse.

I assume your assessment on Baldur's Gate games was made for the vanilla game? There are hundreds of mods that provide addons of dialogues, quests, companions, more battles, etc. Just look under *Modding* in this forum to find them. They are easy to install, they are for free, most of them are well tested and you find contents for everything you can wish for. A modded Baldur's Game should give you any amount of depth you may wish for.

Just continue with Bioware and Obsidian games and you will be fine :)

Arkanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura maybe. You would want to look into fan made patches for it so that the combat is a bit more balanced.

Agreed. Made it feel like a whole new exp. when I started adding mods finally.

@Syndaree Hah,ya mean there are games OTHER than BG? :*B)

Seriously though, If you already tried mods I unfortunately don't have any recommendations, as I am a bit of BG zealot (and happy being so), but if you have not, start with at least BGNPC Project and Unfinished Business to start, esp for a human, new romances, friendships, engaging quests, answers to old questions, etc. etc. :)

You don't mention Pillars of Eternity. That's worth a try. The combat is much improved and The White March expansion is very good. Just avoid the Endless Paths of Tedium.
Also, Neverwinter Nights is much more than the poor OC. Try HotU, also, try NWN2 MotB.

The first Mass Effect game has been mentioned. There is also Jade Empire, although I felt that was cut a bit short.

Ok thank you all for suggestions!

    - I will definitely try Pillars of Eternity, it looks great
    - Tyranny and Numenera don't work on my PC unfortunately, it's a bit old
    - Nwn MOTB and Fallout NV were on my list, thank you for confirming them
    - I've already played Baldur's Gate I modded as well, I don't wanna replay it again :)
    - I tried Arcanum and it just felt awkward, I don't think mods would change enough to warrant a second try
    - Mass Effect and Jade Empire look great as well, will try them out!

I'm always open to more suggestions :)

I am going to throw an odd ball and suggest Hands of Fate.

It is a unique card game that blends story, combat and suspense and mystery in a neat package.

@Syndaree I have to ask, given your criteria, you ever tried PnP D&D, of any edition. It has all that. Sometimes hard to get a good group together at all the right times though.

! Some fans have fixed the combat? :o That'd be awesome! The game world and wilderness is fun to explore. But if you pump dex (or agi?), your character has so many attacks per round that you can kill any enemy before they can attack. :D
Guess I was mistaken. Looks like the fixpack doesn't have any component for this.

The combat probably isn't to your tastes, but if you want a good story with strong writing and memorable characters, you could try Undertale. It's a very nonstandard RPG in many ways, but you might just find it very interesting.

I've been a BG2 fan for 17 years, and I actually rate Undertale much higher than BG2.

@semiticgod Never heard of that one, 'Undertale' but it looks like an interesting concept. Reminds me just a hair of an old C64 game 'Below the Root' I enjoyed in the 80's, based on a novel series with pacifism at the core of society(I think, been a LONG time).

On the other hand, hehheh, RED ALERT, RED ALERT, we have dissension in the ranks, call out the enforcers, call out the boys in brown suits, the red shirts, the storm troopers, the dadblame Flaming Fist even. ;):)

On a more serious hand, I often remember games (probably more PnP games) or see others that have ideas I often thought to myself ,now why didn't BG do THAT?'
I know, I'll turn myself in to a moderator, but sadly it seems their identifying 'T shirts' have all faded to black. I wonder, who could they be? B)

If your machine can't do Tyranny and Torment, then it might struggle with PoE, since they all use the same engine.

@Zaghoul: If you're truly passionate about conflict resolution, I think Undertale would especially appeal to you!

@semitgod Just may try it, after reading a bit more on it tonight (oh lawd, something NOT BG?) The bit about uncovering monsters emotional state to gain advantage sounded a bit like 'some' negotiation skills.
