.... or a Butter-Vest, if you will.
Haha, get it.
Right. Incredibly clever puns aside, a lot of you guys who have known me here for a while, are aware that aside from just being a hugeass nerd with an amazing sense of humor, I am also what the "cool kids" call a metalhead.
No, that doesn't mean my skull has metal plating, that I have gold teeth or that I have quicksilver poisoning, it means that I am one of those weirdos who wears black clothes and listens to music that is about worshipping Santa. Or was it Satan? One of those.
So, now to the title of this thread. Most of you probably wonder what the HECK a gorram battle-vest is. Well, good lads and lasses, let me tell you. A battle-vest - also known as cut-off, or where I come from, a "Kutte" - is a piece of clothing, usually a vest (who'd have guessed?!) that has all sorts of stuff attached to it, usually patches with band logos, buttons and metal studs. It is meant to give other people a first indicator of what your general tastes in music, political believes, what bands you have seen live and/or whatever else you'd like. Think about it as "tattooing" a piece of clothing. The stuff on a battle-vest is a representation and/or extention of it's wearer.
And I am now making myself one of those.
I already had one of those as a teenager, but it had barely anything on it and sadly I had grown out of it within a year or so and afterwards I didn't bother to make a new one. Instead I'd put my patches and buttons on my bag and my parka. Especially in the past two years a lot has changed in my life. I moved to a different town, found new friends, developed a lot as a person. And I feel that this new me should get a battle-vest again.
And I wanna share with you guys my progress.
At first I figured it would make more sense to find myself another forum that specialises more on metal and stuff, but honestly, I like this forum and I like you guys and I don't wanna post about this anywhere else. So I decided to post this here after all. And hey, I promise you it won't all just be metal .... cause my vest is gonna include my love for gaming and arting as well! So strap in, we are going for a ride, bois!

Long speech, short sense, let's get to it!
First, see my vest, no patches or nothing attached yet:
I bought it off Ebay in November or so and sadly it didn't fit as well as I hoped, so I decided to open up the side seams and add a lacing. Usually it shouldn't matter, since most people (especially women, because boobs often don't fit inside standard male cut denim vests) wear their battle-vest open at all times, but I wanted to keep the option to wear it closed. Simply so that I can wear it with a blouse if I want and not just in combination with a bandshirt or something.
Here's a photo of what it looks like when currently worn:
(Sorry for the top down angle, I don't own a selfie stick and my arms are not that long.)
I already have some of the patches that I am most likely gonna put on the vest, here are the ones that I had ready at hand right now (aka laying on my desk and I didn't need to go rummaging through my stuff for):
The top right one translates to "Keep your environment clean."
Sadly some of the bands/acts I like either don't have patches or I can't get them shipped over here to Germany, because international shipping can be a bitch I am gonna make some of my own patches for those. Already bought all the stuff I need, but I don't own a printer and I keep forgetting to take my flashdrive with the embroidery patterns with me to have them printed at a copyshop. Some other patches I still need to buy and some others I already ordered online but am still waiting to be delivered.
I am not gonna tell you what those missing patches are, I guess you guys are gonna have to wait and see me post more photos in the future ;D

Looks like a pirate.
I do hope you have seen these bands. Otherwise it's quite poser-ish
I am very okay with that.
Augh, are we gonna start with this discourse already? Fine, but only in spoiler tags, I don't want my thread derailed into yet another discussion about this pointlessnes.
Also, I kind of have the problem, that I got into a bunch of bands/acts after they disbanded (i.e. The Gone Jackals) or literally died (i.e. Dio ). And there are a shitton of bands I have seen live but I don't like enough (anymore) to wear their patch (i.e. Coheed & Cambria, System of a Down, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Volbeat, Excrematory Grindf***ers and a billion more). I am still undecided on wether or not I should get a Rage patch, cause even though they used to be my very favourite band and I have seen them live at least five times (honestly, I lost track) but when they broke off like two or so years ago in the shittiest way possible (the singer/bassist and the guitarist declared the band disbanded out of the blue one day on Facebook and didn't even tell their drummer about it).
Also, a lot of bands I like don't ever bother playing in Germany and if they do, they only play as an opener for another band I don't care about. Not gonna do that ever again. Oh, and some bands I like are SO huge, that I am not even sure I'd wanna see them live, cause I really don't like some of these supper massive concerts where you can't see shit unless you are there five hours before they open the gates.
I once went to a Hammerfall concert to see Orden Ogan (who at the time where still relatively unknown and small). We left after Hammerfall had started playing, because it was unbearable. Granted, the fault was mainly with the event organiser, not the band, but still.
Last year I wanted to see Flogging Molly live, but they only opened for Volbeat, which I had already seen live at Rock am Ring many years ago and the ticket was imo too expensive to just see Flogging Molly playing for 30 minutes.
I am wearing the vest to show what stuff I am into. Other people can do trophy-vests if they want, but I couldn't possibly care less if a bunch of purists think I am a poser. The metal-community is full of hypocrits and idiots, so why should I care? Also, like I said, this vest is not gonna be just for music stuff, there's gonna be a bunch of comic, art and gaming related patches, too.
If you really believe that battle-vests can only be trophy-vests, then you are gonna foam at your mouth when you see my backpatch (I ordered it specifically from the US, it's gonna take a while to arive)
Right, enough of that. I mean, you can try keep telling me that it makes me a poser, but I will not change and I do not care.
I mean, it would be great if at some point I could claim that I have seen all my favourite bands/acts live,
but I think it's very unlikely.
By the way, I strongly recommend that you guys google those names and listen to their songs.
@DJKajuru and @mlnevese certainly will back up my opinion.
Seriously though, it looks like this vest is going to be awesome! A very nice mix of patches!
Doesn't mean you shouldn't be allowed to show the world that you love them.
So I was wondering: I am gonna go to a birthday party on saturday and I wanna "debut" my vest there. But I know for a fact that my backpatch won't arrive in time. Should I just leave that space free then? Feels like it might look too naked ... any ideas?
Sadly I wasn't able to find the Ensiferum patch my friend had given me
I also wasn't able to find my box of pyramid studs that I've been saving, I wonder what happened to them.
Speaking of studs, I'd love to put a line of studs along the collar (or maybe just on one side and move the Dio patch somewhere else), but I am not sure if I'd run the risk of regularly getting my long hair stuck in them ._.
- Three band patches
- Two comic patches
- One fake cartoon band patch
- Two decorative patches that don't mean anything
- One patch I am not gonna show here cause it's tmi and also might get me banned >.>
- 100 pack of silver pyramid studs
- 100 pack of silver cone studs
- The crowning piece, the ultimate backpatch
And now ...
Seriously, I'd wear'em!
Three decorative ones and four nerd ones.
Also one that represents my job.
F***, that vest is gonna be so full.
Starting things of with the LucasArts logo aka the symbol of my childhood.
I think I did okay for my first try.
