    Avariel

Avar (as in Lavar, like Lavar Ball) ee-el

hehe... I just imagined Lavar Ball as a Baldur's Gate character. Lavar Bhaal.

I used to pronounce it "ah-yawn-tiss" but at some point I got the impression that it was supposed to be "ah-jon-tiss." In either case, I think it's an ugly-sounding name for a bland character.

I always thought it was "Neolithid". Like an illithid. Just really looking at the spelling of that word for the first time now.

    Edit: Nee-Oh-Lih-Thihd.

Can't think of any common English word to clearly represent the "Jh" sound. It's something like "Jhha".

Seriously, there are too few alphabets in the English language to uniquely designate all the possible phonetic sounds to any letter or letter combinations.

The best I can think of is the the Portuguese J sound, kinda like a Shj

ke-ra su-mat, no hard pronounciations on any letter or syllable. Perhaps a slightly harder prnounciation of "su" in Sumat though, as in "SOO-mat". I dunno though.

I'm late to the party, but just gotta say THANK YOU @joenso for saying that about Duergar being Dvärgar, haha.. I can't believe I've never thought about that!

Here's another "swedish inspired" name; Otuygh can maybe be pronounced as "Otyg" which is a very old swedish word meaning roughly nuisance/annoyance and/or devilry/sorcery.

@Skatan Now I can only pronounce Duergar as if I'm Aldo Raine speaking Swedish.

ajantis is basically ajax (greek: aias, gen. aiantos) so it shouldn't be that stupid

so, based only on this, probably the best pronounciation is ey-jaen-tiss

I've always read his "J" as a "Dj", so "Ah-DjAn-tis", with the capital letters being emphasized.

Since no one's stepping up with a new request...
Neira? Is it Nay-ra or Nee-ra? I've always thought the latter until the EEs, but...

I'm going to apply the canons of statutory construction from the reading of law to this. The rule is that a term appearing in several places is ordinarily interpreted as having the same meaning each time it appears.

That means if they intended to pronounce Neera the same way as Neira, they would have spelled it the same way.

Therefore, Na-ear-ra! Again, apply the rule and it would sound like Jaheira.

    Ne-ear-ra

I can barely spell it let alone say it: Athkatla

@bob_veng: What's the next name to be pronounced? You can suggest any name you like.
  • JoenSoJoenSo Member Posts: 910
I suggest you suggest Wyvern, @bob_veng . I heard it actually pronounced for the first time in Dragon Age Inquisition. If they pronounced it correctly then my life has been a lie since the day I first meet a wyvern in Cloakwood forest.

Why-venn or Why-vern, but the R is almost silent. I'm curious to your version though @JoenSo.

That's how I've assumed it was pronounced, but in Dragon Age they pronounce it more like wivv-ern. For my sanity I shall just assume they don't know what they're talking about.

I remember hearing Vivienne's "Wyvern" pronunciation in DA:I and being really alarmed by it. Could it be that I had been wrong all these years, with why-vern? I've decided that I wasn't wrong, but there was a period of uncertainty that I did not care for.

Though I'm certain the pronunciation ought to be (if it isn't already) why-vern, I'll allow Vivienne her own angle on these things because she's a total boss...

I always expected the English would say it that way.

    Is that Felicia Day?
