“I will tell you when you’re safe!” she yells as she runs. A moment later, the party feels the ground beneath their feet start to rumble. The rumbling turns into a tremor, then an earthquake.
Fiora and Kaled both stumble and fall to the ground, and Vaga flies out of Fiora’s hands. Guston barely manages to stay on his feet. Emeril, on the other hand, makes it seem as though she was taking a morning stroll, as she gracefully keeps her footing.
Out of the ground spawn two large spider like creatures. Kaled’s Detect Evil spell tells him that these creatures are evil. Before they can attack, however, Emeril rushes forward without hesitation and attacks.
Emeril: Attack: 17, 26, 24, 14, 24, 25
Four of her attacks connect, and the monster stumbles back under the onslaught.
Vaga tumbles to the ground, no longer pretending he does what he can to gracefully roll back up into attack position. He immediately lunge next to Emeril and attack the other spider creature with a flurry of blows, naked arms and legs flying out in all directions. Never before have such a macabre sight been seen, a sleeping dwarf thrown to the ground, only to roll straight into action attacking a spider!
Well, something similar haven't been seen since last week when my uncle Jesterbuster Jansen had a party with four gnolls and a troll! You see uncle Jesterbuster likes to..
Schooo, schoo! You're not allowed in here Jan Jansen!
The creature deftly leaps over Vaga as he throws the first punch. Vaga quickly spins, throwing out his second punch as he does, only for it to bounce off of the creature’s armored leg.
These things’ legs are easily over ten feet long, and their bodies are twice as wide, by the way.
“It’s a fight!” Emeril shouts. “Take the other one!” As she allows herself to slow down just a little, the spider she attacked bites at her and stomps down on her with its legs.
Creature: Attack: 1d20+8: 23, 17, 28
She nimbly avoids the bite, then the first leg. As she moves, the creature is able to track her movements for its second stomp, and she gets hit, sending her flying past the party. The other creature turns its attention towards Vaga.
Creature: Attack: 1d20+8: 23, 24, 26
Its fangs sink deep into Vaga’s body, and it tosses him into the air, then smacks him back down to the ground hard with both legs. As Vaga lies there in pain, he starts to feel sick.
Vaga: Fortitude save: 5+2=7
And he feels his body weaken, as the poison enters his bloodstream.
He loses 4 points of Constitution, lowering it to 8.
As soon as Vaga is able, he pulls out the small vial of antidote he bought from Erica so long ago and drinks it. He has it tucked away safely in his loincloth. The pain crashes through his body, but it only works as adrenaline for him. The taste of pain is the most succulent of flavours!
Vaga realizes he alone is no match versus these foes. Even with a really good attack, he couldn't score a hit. This, however, doesn't really stop him since dying might just be precisely his purpose today.
Kaled’s sword gets slapped away by the creature’s leg forcefully, but he follows it through with a Magic Missile spell. The two missiles collide with the creature, but it doesn’t seem to notice much.
Emeril: Attack: 25, 19, 27, 30, 22, 16
It does, however, notice the Hasted form of Emeril, as she leaps in between the party and the creatures, and begins slicing through their legs, alternating her attacks between the two. The party notices that her katana looks different than it did a moment ago. The blade has turned black as night, and a black aura surrounds it.
Two of her swings hit the creature attacking the party, and it staggers to the side. Two more attacks hit the one she previously attacked, and it shrieked in pain. The creature’s scream nearly deafens the party.
Emeril turns to the party. “Focus on keeping your teammates alive!” she shouts. “I’ll take point!”
The creatures are now no longer paying any attention to the seemingly harmless party, focusing instead on the one who has proven capable of hurting them. They lunge for Emeril.
Creature: Attack: 1d20+8: 27, 25, 11, 18, 17, 24
Both sets of fangs manage to pierce her skin, but she kicks away from their legs as they stomp at her. She seems unaffected by their poison.
No, you’ll need to see a cleric with access to 2nd Level spells who can at least cast Lesser Restoration. It does save you from losing more points over time, however.
gotta go to bed mates. I hopa Vaga lives to see tomorrow, hehe @nimran, you can take control as last time. Vaga will gladly sacrifice himself and his HP to save his friends. he has one health potion tucked away, deep, deep inside the loincloth..
Vaga gets up again. He still feel weakened but the drain has stopped for now. He tries to circle the spiders, not drawing their attention but still being able to attack.
Vaga uses his Flurry of Blows once more on the the creature.
Vaga: Attack: 18+4=22, 17+4=21
The creature unleashed a scream, as Vaga’s hardened fists connect with one of its rear legs.
Emeril takes another series of attacks against both creatures.
Emeril: Attack: 18, 24, 20, 28, 30, 26
She hits the creature that attacked the party twice, and its legs are nearly swept out from under it. It somehow manages to stand back up, but its partner isn’t so lucky. Its front legs are severed completely with the first two hits, and it topples face-first into Emeril’s blade, impaling its brain. The creature shudders, then dies.
The remaining creature is furious at its partner’s death, and it lunges at Emeril in a rage.
Creature: Attack: 18, 14, 26
Emeril dodges out of the way of the fangs, then dodges a stomping leg, before getting hit with the other one. She grunts as she slides across the ground, the soles of her boots digging into the white surface.
Guston knows when he’s outmatched, and so has been hanging back, looking for where he might be useful.
@Nimran I confess I haven’t written down Guston’s 2nd level spells. Chauntea’s clergy prepare their spells at sundown, so he would have done it while he prayed at the altar of Ilmater last night. Should I just pick them now? Honestly, I can’t imagine any way that Guston would have foreseen to prepare Lesser Restoration. He most likely would have prepared Chant and Aid, and kept his other spells, Cure Light Wounds x2 and Sanctuary, and swapped out Shillelagh for something else, like bless or protection from evil, as he didn’t need it anymore with his +1 dagger.
Also, do I have my bow and arrows? I wrote down that Guston came downsatairs with his +1 dagger. He is obviously still wearing his amulet, as he wouldn’t have needed to remove it.
Monstrous creatures attacking while I was absent! Really, I ought to specify an AI for combat in case I'm absent for some time, so that it'll be easier for @Nimran to handle Ignatius in combat.
Well then, since I've come back, let me jump into the fray!
Ignatius had lost himself in the thick fog and had only now come to the clearing, and finds that his friends have been attacked by strange monsters. He sees one of those abominations lying dead, while the other fights furiously with Emeril, who appears to be in a disadvantageous position. Without any hesitation, Ignatius casts Sunscorch (Innate) on the giant spider, hoping to blind the creature, so as to give Emeril a chance to either finish it, or escape to safety.
*Fiora falls back behind Emeril, staying between her and the rest of the party. If a spider gets past, or Emeril gets in trouble, she can jump in to assist.*
I don't know how combat works in pnp. I've been position and attacking as different "turns". SHould I keep that up. or are both expected in one "turn"?
@mashedtaters Hey man, play the character. If Guston wouldn’t have it prepared, then he wouldn’t have it prepared. It’s not like you’re the only cleric in town.
If you didn’t say you had the bow, then you probably don’t have it.
@ThacoBell everyone gets to move and attack once in the same turn. Higher levels will increase the number of attacks characters can make, but for right now, your characters can only make one (or two, in Vaga’s case).
Creature: Reflex save: 8+1=9
Just as it seems ready to lash out again, the creature is blindsighted by a ray of light. It screeches in pain, and in the aftermath of the ray’s light, it starts looking around frantically, as it is blinded.
Gathered some information from my character on the first page, it was hard to keep track the equipment and the known spells. Marked my memorized spells with a star. Kaled used all his first level spells in the combat. Do we get any extra spellslots as we level @Nimran ? As i see now, everyone has as many slots/level as their mod of the respective ability.
And his fists break through the creature’s hide and sever its rear leg. The creature screams once more and falls. Emeril walks up to it calmly and, with a nod to Vaga and Kaled, brings her katana down on it, slicing its skull in half. The creature’s cries die down as it does.
Emeril straightens and sheathes her blade, and she says “We should waste no more time. There are more dangerous creatures here. It isn’t safe for you.” She gives Vaga a sad look as she sees his wounds, then turns and heads out once more.
Vaga sees Emeril's look, but looks stoically up back at her. He carries his pain and his wounds as a mother would carry her delivered newborn; with love, pride and disregarding the pain that was there.. and still is there. He can feel he's weakened, but he cares little. The surge of ache that explodes every so often in him only strengthens his resolve.
He looks back at the rest of the group. "Should we follow Emeril"?
It isn’t very long before Emeril leads the party to a door. It is a single, normal-looking door, except with no walls to support it. Emeril lets out a sigh of relief and opens it. The party can see that the door leads to the interior of a house. “This is my home,” she says to the group. “Let’s get inside. I will tell you more once we’re out of this place.” She motions for the party to enter.
“You live here, in this... place?” asks Guston as he enters the room. “This doesn’t seem very hospitable. And what’s going on? We were just at the inn like 25 minutes ago. And now we’re killing giant spiders... or rather you’re killing giant spiders... out of no where!”

*Fiora dashes in front of Vaga to shield him from more attacks. Her sword glows blue with righteous fury*
The huge spider creature bats the sword aside and stares down the little halfling speck that tried to strike at it.
Vaga realizes he alone is no match versus these foes. Even with a really good attack, he couldn't score a hit. This, however, doesn't really stop him since dying might just be precisely his purpose today.
