We had a random ice sheet cover everything yesterday. Temps have fallen less than 20F on some days. It wouldn't be so bad but the wind chill makes it feel more like -20. It should get back above freezing in a few day at least. For a day.
The hottest temperature that i've experimented was 36ºC or 96.8ºF (fainted this day), the coldest was on my vacation on Bariloche(Argentina), not on city(only snowed one day on city) but in mountains i experienced -14ºC or 6.8ºF. I really hate hot weather. I wish that i can live in a cold city so i can work out all of my free time without breaking a sweat.
We get more extreme than that just staying at home. Back in 2012, we had 10 days above 100ºF (38ºC) in the summer (not a record). In 1999, the winter lows hit -25ºF or -32ºC (tied the record). I remember that day. It was COLD!
Have any of you ever seen an ice shove? Never experienced one myself, but it happens when water freezes into chunks of ice and is pushed onshore by the winds. I saw this on a weather channel program once. Weird look.

People have also called them "Ice tsunamis". Very slow-moving ones, but also very powerful. It just looks like ice tumbling and falling, but they can knock down entire buildings.

So, there is this thing called an arctic blast going on in North America right now. It is colder than I ever remember it being here. It is supposed to reach the coldest point tomorrow before warming up again. Where I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the high tomorrow will be -14 F or -26 C and the low will be -31 F or -35 C, and that is without wind chill! With wind chill it will get down to -48 F or -44 C! I bet it must be even colder in Canada.
What exactly is an arctic blast anyway? I heard something about the jet stream directing arctic weather patterns down south or something, but I wasn't paying much attention to it at the time.
I live in Chattanooga, TN. We had one half an inch of snow predicted for this morning. Every school in the area, plus doctor's offices and several businesses and factories closed. We got not one flake of snow. The sun is shining, and the temperature is already above freezing, when they had predicted temperatures to fall throughout the day and remain below freezing.
So, I'm sitting here with a "snow day" off, and I can't relax and enjoy it, because I've got to worry about making up all the music lessons I'm missing today.
@Tresset We are getting lucky here in the middle of the country. Its "Only" going to hit 2F at the lowest tomorrow. We get some crazy biting wind blowing across the plains though.
It is so cold out that I can barely touch the external doorknobs on my house without getting frost burn. So what am I doing? I am making clouds with boiling water! Fun!
About an hour ago, I went out to the grocery store 3 blocks away. By the time I go out of the store, it was honest to god snowing. It was beautiful... and then the wind started blowing in my face... all the way home.
By the time I got home, I felt like my cheeks were going to crack and fall off. It's been colder today than it has in weeks. I am expecting AT-AT and Scout Walker Ubers to be arriving to the city at any minute.
It's 4 degrees outside right now, feels like -11 with windchill. It will be -19 with windchill tomorrow. I will be staying home for the foreseeable future.
My home town Gothenburg, which is usually rather windy and rainy, being a city at the coast close to the gulf stream, has had a nice coupe of winter days lately. The snow has been staying rather than melting into slush, so I am thoroughly enjoying the weather and the crisp, often sunny, days. I've learned to love winter, proper winter, and wish it could stay this way for a month or so. But it won't, of course, it'll melt into slush soon I reckon.
Basically it is the strong artic winds (or artic vortex) weakening and becoming “looser” and wider. Another airstream comes along and cuts through a section of the looser part and pushes that sheared off part to the south.
I live in Hoth apparently. That explains a lot! The Michigan UP should really be included in the "How do you people live like this?" zone however. I know, I used to live there. Visiting my family in Duluth, MN for a weekend was actually a relief from the winter weather more often than not!
I live in Texas. South Texas, where it's about 15 degrees warmer than central Texas, generally, assuming no fronts are causing a bigger/smaller difference.
My rule of thumb: 60+: shorts plus short-sleeved shirt (my default state)
50-60: long pants or jacket
40-50: long pants and jacket
40-: Triple layer, gloves
30-: Abandon all hope, save yourselves.
If wet and/or windy, drop 5 degrees from nominal temperature.
Below 45, I can never get warm, even triple layering, cold clings.
I see that chart, and I think Hoth and "How do you people live like this?" should be reversed.

Have you seen the volcano that had blue lava? And it glows blue at night. The name of the volcano is Kawa Ijen.

Sigh. Such is life in the southeast.
What can I say? My friend is a funny guy.
