It now seems that you can just put the word "big" in front of anything that is pervasive in culture and that automatically makes it some sort of grand conspiracy. These theories are as deep as a puddle. They really don't get past the words themselves. There is nothing behind them, they are just phrases they find it convenient to repeat in lieu of actual thoughts.
It did strike me, reading the article, that one of the voters just flat out said he voted for Trump because he didn't like trans people and didn't want us to live our lives freely.
I have to agree, I genuinely do think less of people who flat out admit, explicitly, that they do not want me to have rights. I do not judge people based on who they are, but I absolutely judge people based on their words and deeds. It's the "world where people will be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin" thing that Dr. King talked about.
Even Dr. King said it wasn't about avoiding judgment. It was about making judgments only based on stuff that matters.
One of my trans friends is getting harassed at work these days and the others are giving her advice, and one of the things that sticks out is the fact that our rights are dependent on anti-discrimination legislation the GOP opposes and the Democrats support. That's our only defense against discrimination in the workplace. In real time, my friend's everyday safety is dependent on whether our politicians want them to have rights. GOP leadership means our rights can vanish with a single bill.
I've heard folks on the right complain about being persecuted for who they are, and over and over again, they cite the same thing: not physical events or IRL stuff, but "people said mean stuff to me online." People do that shit to me constantly; people will randomly accuse me of being a pedophile or mentally ill or making gross comments about my genitals just because I let slip that I'm trans. Meanwhile, my friends actively get harassed in everyday life, in person, at the workplace. Half my friends have been physically attacked or sexually abused. Getting death threats or rape threats is a common occurrence in the community.
And people like this guy admit that they vote for Trump because they're opposed to our existence and want the government not to protect us. Yes, I do think less of people who flat out tell me they're opposed to equal protection under the law.
This isn't a culture thing or a difference in rhetoric or civility. At that point, it's whether or not you even believe that certain people should have rights.
And some folks don't even pretend to support human rights. They'll proudly oppose it, and yet be outraged the instant someone tells them they're wrong.

It's impossible to ignore the language they use when talking about it as well. To a person, when complaining about it, the phrase "shoved down my throat" will get used, about 90% of the time. Let's set aside the fact that it doesn't materially effect them in any way whatsoever. There is an obvious sexual overtone to this comment, and it can't be a coincidence that this phrase is almost UNIVERSALLY the one used when these issues come up. I'll leave it to mental health professionals to find out the reason why. But it's almost as if they view having to recognize people they find "gross" as equal citizens worthy of protection as some sort sexual assault on their mind. Like the very idea of two men having sex is a violation of their personal freedom. And yet not one of these people would complain about two women they find attractive kissing.
Moreover, and the most important point. They think people look down on them for having an OPINION about gay and trans people. That isn't the problem. The problem is they support a political party who actively seeks to turn that opinion into public policy that adversely effects the livelihood of people whose lifestyle they disapprove of. And they either a.) don't give a shit or b.) think that's great and how it should be.
One of the things gay and trans folks will remind each other when hatred feels exhausting is that "the most radical thing you can do is exist." Your mere existence is an affront to some people, but every out gay or trans person is contributing to visibility and slowly wearing away at the hatred. It's the "double-edged sword of visibility": an individual is more in danger when they're out as LGBT+, but the more LGBT+ people are visible, the safer it will be for everyone, because hatred grows and spreads best in ignorance.
It's easier to face the ugliness of the world when you remember that you're tiring it out and making it safer for the people who come after you.

Please stop calling us critters. Please. Every time you do is dehumanizing us. You are giving an ounce and taking a pound. I don’t even call the worst of the hillbilly rednecks critters. Somehow you have made us less than while arguing for our rights. I don’t need anyone to help make me less than, I am good enough at doing that on my own.
Words matter. My stepfather called me and my older brother little lizards. Not my younger brother who was not his, just me and my older brother. My older brother was a criminal at a very young age but I wasn’t. Words matter.
Everyone called me Michelle and sissy as long as I can remember. I didn’t mind being Michelle but they made me feel awful to be a sissy. Went to a family gathering of my grandfather’s family once. His one sister’s granddaughter and I hit it off and became instant friends. She kept calling me Sissy though so I asked her why finally and she said, Isn’t that what they call you Michelle, Sissy? She thought it was my nickname. And she thought that Michelle was my name. Words matter.
I am me and okay with that. My name was chosen long before I consciously I decided to change my name. I chose Mikaela but my family kept calling me Michelle. Through all of their problems with who I was, they did not call me the name my parents gave me, or the name I chose, they called me Michelle. They did not make me who I am but they were never going to let me be anything other. Words matter.
My family did not make me me, well... me, but nothing they said ever made it easier to be me. They did everything they could to make me hate myself with their words. It worked. Words matter.
I gave up, you know what? I have been Michelle so long I can’t even imagine being anything other now. There was a lot of abuse along the way, but it was always what people said that made me feel worse than the cuts and bruises. I am very much solid in who I am now, but I am not the only one and have not been treated the worst by a long shot. There are people out there screaming inside and words matter to them. Take care of them, they do not deserve to be hurt because of who they are.
Wow, a minor gesture from an otherwise unpleasant man. If a few more nurses and doctors get vaccinated earlier because of this then it's a good thing...

Finally... this may actually shut them up: “Last week, Smartmatic began sending letters to Fox News, Rudy Giuliani and other Trump allies threatening legal action unless they fully retract baseless claims that software developed by a U.S. affiliate it sold more than a decade ago altered the outcome of the U.S. election.”
Hopefully, Dominion, which ironically started after the Bush/Gore Florida fiasco, follows suit and does the same.
I’d target OANN first as they are both too stupid, and do not have the capital to survive losing a lawsuit like this. Put them out of business for good.

It strikes me that the very name "Dominion" plays perfectly into right-wing hysteria. It's a one-word word trigger like Benghazi, and it also has the added benefit of sounding like something out of the book of Revelation, like it's the Antichrist's own voting machine company.
Bill Barr just resigned. It should tell us all something about how insane Trump has become that Bill Barr of all people decided he'd had enough and quit.
The deputy AG will take his spot, and I look forward to a rash of new investigations into Democrats in the next month, with the GOP held senate requiring a Biden AG to keep them running or risk not being confirmed.

those same lemmings are totally against medicare for all too which would only help them. Oh well. Still funny he holds a party tuesday in the middle of a raging pandemic and wednesday he's quarantining.
Obviously, there is rationing going on in this first phase of vaccines, but is there are SINGLE good reason Joe Biden and Kamala Harris haven't received the first of the two shots yet?? I'm sorry, but that is a matter of national security. Maybe they have and I just haven't heard it. I don't believe the entire incoming staff needs to keep preferential treatment, but the principles at the highest levels of government should be at the top of any list.

Opportunity to take it. Once drawn up, the vaccine has a 6 hour shelf life (or at least, that is how the hospital that my pharma tech room mate works at is handling it). Logistically, it's going to be a nightmare to roll out and vaccinate everyone. Thankfully the Moderna version of the vaccine takes this into consideration and for PR purposes, influential people maybe being told to wait for this one before getting vaccinated as it is probably going to be the version that is widely available to everyone. No need for conspiracy theories about one vaccine for the ultra powerful and one vaccine for everyone else.

Trunp/Pence probably don't want to, it doesn't fit their narrative that Coronavirus is no big deal man and everyone should not wear masks and gather irresponsibly.
I believe Joe Biden is saying he'll get vaccinated publicly next week like a real leader.

Pence got the vaccine this morning. Gotta beat Biden to the punch I guess.
Also second lady Karen Pence and Surgeon General Jerome Adams were administered the vaccine.

Well, since it's a 2-dose vaccine it makes sense to keep half in reserve. It doesn't do anybody any good to have the first dose and then have something go wrong and not be able to get the 2nd. Look, I'm no fan of Trump but not everything is his fault...

They've actually done studies, and getting just one dose of the vaccine does provide some immunity. I think I saw that there was something like 52% immunity provided, so even getting 1 dose would be a good thing.
Also, I think it's 100% a good thing that Pence got the Vaccine. I guess Trump doesnt really need it since he so recently had the virus, but I wouldnt be opposed to him getting it too.
Same with all of the senate/house/etc. It may seem like favortism, but I think the government should be as protected as possible so they can work without fear of getting sick or making others sick.
and it's not like it's that many people the begin with. a few thousand doses would inoculate all of the government + immediate staffers.
On the other hand the government (well half of it) is playing fast and loose with covid already. Holding parties. Not wearing masks. Why should those people get vaccinated? Do we think they will suddenly act as good role models if they do get vaccinated or will the encourage others to go out and take risks and be even more reckless themselves knowing they are vaccinated. The people at home watching them prance around won't have access to the vaccine themselves for many months.
Well, since it's a 2-dose vaccine it makes sense to keep half in reserve. It doesn't do anybody any good to have the first dose and then have something go wrong and not be able to get the 2nd. Look, I'm no fan of Trump but not everything is his fault...
This doesn't seem to be the plan, if it is nobody told Pfizer because they said they are waiting on further instructions, not that they were directed to intentional sit on reserve second doses.
Also, the company is manufacturing more all the time so you should be able to get one now, then they'll have made more later and you can get your second dose.
While I get the outrage about people being responsible for the virus' spread getting vaccinated, especially in some cases directly responsible within their own personal lives. It's just a fact that there is value in protecting our elected leaders. And maintaining that norm regardless about how we feel about them.
That's what the electoral system chose. And they deserve protection. The logic here really is no different than the fact that they have Secret Service details or armed guards at the Capitol building. And as JJ says above, we're not talking about a lot of doses here.
The holdup in stimulus basically boils down to this: Democrats think giving businesses blanket immunity in regards to the safety of their workers is a non-starter, and Republicans think giving people $1200.00 more dollars will turn them into welfare cases for life. You tell me which is more ridiculous. If you side with the businesses, remind yourself about the Tyson Foods managers who were placing wagers on which line workers would contract the virus and rethink your worldview.

That's what the electoral system chose. And they deserve protection. The logic here really is no different than the fact that they have Secret Service details or armed guards at the Capitol building. And as JJ says above, we're not talking about a lot of doses here.
