Today was the first time that I actually managed to get far enough in a no re-load run that I was able to get my kensai to level nine so that I can dual her to a thief. And the timing was perfect. She became a thief just as she was about to enter Baldur's Gate:
Now I just have to find 160,000 XP so that she can get her kensai abilities back. And I hope I can do it soon because at the moment she's hopeless: she can't wear any armour and she couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

Thank you for reminding me that a dual classed kensai has still the restrictions of his class. I'm playing a kensai too and it's actually a very big point in my plans.

The fact that a kensai / thief still can't wear armour when the kensai part is dormant came as a bit of a shock. I was just about to buy Shadow Armour when I noticed it has a brown outline around it. The Shield Amulet is still good and with a +1 ring and 18 DEX it gives you an armour class of -1. I'm using a tweak that allows non-fighters to choose weapon styles so putting pips in single weapon style helps with the armour class as well. But it is a real change of pace when you go from being a fighter who can destroy everything in her path to a thief who gets to attack once per round and always misses.
Today was the first time I noticed that the Thunderhammer Smithy doesn't sell two-handed swords. Seems an odd oversight on Taerom Fuiruim's part?
It’s because the big swords are in Feldepost inn. The inn keeper has one for sale.
Apparently the inn keeper is the real “big sword vendor” of the town. There is a bastard sword +1 in a locked chest in the smithy but one for sale at the inn.
And remember that Winthrop has a really big collection of big sword - being and inn keeper at a library this makes perfect sense.
Over all the inn keepers just has the leverage on the big swords. So if you want to buy a really big sword. Visit an inn - not a smithy.
Today was the first time I saw Illasera's incompetence reach such depths that she managed to kill herself before I did. The "Skull trap to the face" strategy does have its drawbacks. Especially when your enemy's face is two feet from your own.
How about "Fireball to the face" in similar circumstances from a kuo-toa wizard? Kuo-toa have negative fire resistance, while the party I was running had extremely high resistances. Captured in a screenshot:
Total damage to party: 4. Total damage to kuo-toa: 137, one death. They really should have picked a different spell.
Today was the first time I got waylaid by a basilisk:
I'm on a no reload run and an encounter like this could have spelled the end. But for once Tymora was smiling on me. I had just been to High Hedge to sell some stuff and I was looking through Thalantyr's stock and thinking there is nothing I really need. But I wanted to buy something so I thought I might as well pick up some potions of Mirrored Eyes in case I decide to go to Durlag's Tower.
As impulse buys go this turned out to be a pretty good one . . .
Today (just now) was the first time I went through the circus tent without talking to the pleasure slave. I meant to, but Jan had Detect Illusion running. Poof.
Today was the first time I tried equipping my character with Brage's cursed, berserking two-handed sword +3:
Not a bad outcome considering I hadn't bothered buffing my third-level, half-orc barbarian before the encounter. Sadly, straight afterwards I tried the same against Zargal and his buddies, forgetting that my armour class wasn't great because I was only wearing splint mail. My berserk barbarian chunked Zargal and made a mess of one of the archers causing him to fail his morale check and that's where things went wrong. He ran away, she followed him and got filled with poison arrows by the other knobgoblin.
Still, I am tempted to try a run where my character only uses Brage's sword just to see how far I can get.
Today was the first time I took Dorn into my party. And to my surprise I discovered he is scared of me ...
I actually love that dialogue, "I AM danger!". It's so cheesy but also so cool at the same time.
I agree. What really amused me about the encounter is that I am actually playing as Permidion Stark - complete with his less than impressive stats - and I am using Eldoth's portrait and voice set for the character so the fact that Dorn seemed intimidated by me was actually quite funny. I'm pretty sure he is more than capable of ripping my arm off and beating me to death with the soggy end.

Haha true! Reminds me of the time I did a run with Tiax as my charname, couple with his real stats, picture etc.

Huh... Now I'm kinda tempted to re-create Charname as Imoen, with her portrait and voiceset and everything, then quietly Ctrl-Y the imposter Imoen that comes up to you after Gorion bites it and see what happens when Imoen is the ONE TRUE GORION'S WARD! :P
Today I learned that in the current version of BG2EE, the Shapeshifter kit's Werewolf form is flagged to not make attacks with an off-hand weapon, even though it can in BG1EE and vanilla.
(SCS game) So for reasons of economizing on XP, I decided to sneak as far as I could through the Cloakwood Mines. Between Invisibility spells and potions, Sanctuary, and thieves stealthing, I got all the way to Davaeorn. On my first try Hareshian heard us coming and cast Detect Invisibility, but I reloaded and went through the prison, and otherwise had no issues making it down to the 4th level.
Midway through fighting the battle horrors, I was attacked from behind by 2 guards and 2 Blacktalons. They didn't follow me down from the 3rd level or anything, they just spawned. 2 more such groups spawned before I was able to kill Davaeorn, after which they stopped.
This never happened to me before on previous runs, where I've annihilated the garrison. So the game must check if you've appropriately defeated the enemies on the first 3 levels, and spawn these guards otherwise.
Since Davaeorn just hid behind his area-effect spells and didn't join the fight, it actually made the battle easier, as by the time I defeated these spawns most of his buffs had worn off. Had he thrown some lightning bolts into the fray, I'd have been done for.
That's an interesting thought, and it would actually make a lot of sense. I mean, the whole point of that subterranean compound is to keep Davaeorn guarded.
What I learned the other day is that Emissary Tar had just been switched for a doppleganger when you see her on the fifth floor of the Iron Throne building. I somehow never saw her dead body in previous runs.
I also learned that you don't have to actually fight the enemies in Ramazith's tower, or him either, to get the Tome of Clear Thought. Just ran up the stairs past them all, grabbed it, and ran back down.
Also, for the first time brought Eldoth to the Friendly Arm Inn. The new menu and store selection is hilarious.
Today was the first time I've ever seen Candlekeep at night. Seriously, in every playthrough, I somehow managed to arrive during the day. It is stunningly gorgeous at night, and now I regret not staying a few days in the inn before getting on with the business.
It was also the first time I had the party intentionally explore the library invisibly, in order to scope out what was going on, then regroup at the inn to talk about "the letter". There was something rather amazing about Sirene and Isra having discussions with Eilrie about it while standing beside the dark library, lit by myriad windows.

Now I want to see that whole scene dubbed into Eldoth's voice.

That's something added by the BG1 NPC Project.
