    what a fail! i got the ettercap ambush in cloakwood and decided to run, but i forgot about the traps! we were taken out, defenseless in web. day 45

    Damn I hate it when that happens! Good luck on the next run!

    Guess I should have looked at my new party more closely before declaring it "pretty good" - didn't notice there is no thief at all...

    That said I have gathered all but Yeslick and we are about to head south out of Beregost.
  • WanderonWanderon Member Posts: 1,418
    Well Therella & Co got through the Nashkel mines and the Amazons in spite of no trap disarming in the mines (Ajantis soaked up the damage) then Nimbul got a horror off and everyone was too scattered & out of range by the time Garricks song got going for it to do any good before Nimbul took out Therella with a couple MMs...

    Auto-save from Carnival Map to Nashkel before Nimbul was Chap 3 - 11 days 10 hours...

    Ouch! It's hard to remember everything. And so many things that can get you killed.

    I would also be in favor of not allowing game engine exploits sometimes used for speed games - particularly the ones that allow you to get to areas before you should be able to normally.

    You mean such as using cheat codes such as Ctrl+J, CLUAConsole:MovetoArea, CLUAConsole:Hans()?

    some of the stuff you see on speedruns. i don't remember all of it, but i do remember a speed run where they used some exploits that got them to places early. party members were even on different maps that would require "you must gather your party to venture forth". i also remember an exploit he used gave him unlimited healing potions.

    I've never done them so I don't know how they are done but recall seeing a thread about speed games where they were finished incredibly fast by using exploits that allowed them to skip large portions of the main questline and still get to the final battle.

    But yeah all those things you mention are also in the same categories I would be in favor of exluding too.

    Well........Gracehana Moonshadow was one-shot by an ankheg. I thought I might venture north to get some quick xp. It was surprising since she had like 17/21 health at level 2 (I figured she'd last more than one hit and I'd decide whether or not ankhegs would be possible). :(. I started to get attached to her, so I might continue a minimal reload RP game with her.

    Since I have another planned MR RP game and Aec'Letec and Saravok left on my assassin game as well, I think I'm done with the no reload challenge for now. Good luck guys.

    It's an absolutely amazing idea! +1000 likes from me!

    This thread alone, single handedly, has awaken my interest in BG and has intensified it a thousand times more! It's like a breath of fresh air!

    To be open and sincere, I'd give a log of all my tryings.

    [spoiler]

    My first attempt to create a character.

    So, Yendak Sandtracker (this name for a male halfling wizard just rocks!)

    A specialist mage - I like mages. A Diviner (by the way, a very good contingency).

    With a group of Xzar, Neera, Kivan, Jaheira and Xan.

    So many wizards together! An intriguing combination.

    Everything is well, until you realize a halfling cannot be a mage... What a pity! A pity indeed!

    Randomly Generated No-reload Speed Game Contest Rules

    1) It's all on the honor system.

    2) You determine your PC and the party per this system. If your PC is impossible then you can
    a) re-roll the PC till you get one that is,
    b) round up the number for race, class, or alignment until you get something that works; your pick as to which to round up,
    c) re-roll the digit for race, class, or alignment using the random number generator (minimum 0, maximum 9) or roll a 1d9 using the WotC dice roller,
    d) if you roll a human and class you get is multi-class, then you could make that class combo a dual-class.
    3) You can take your best of three tries at rolling the PC and party. Then begin the game.
    a) If you roll the same number for a NPC twice you can roll again until you get 5 NPCs.
    b) If three or more NPCs aren't available until Chapters 4 or 5 you may re-roll.
    4) Core rules.

    5) No reloading whatsoever. If the PC dies it's game over.

    6) Once the game begins you're free to add the NPCs you rolled in any order. You may not add any other NPCs, however. You can go ahead and Ctrl+Y the other member of a NPC pair. Or dispose of the character however you wish. They just can't be part of your travels/adventuring.

    7) Recommended but not a strict rule: Regularly share some notes on the progress of your game.

    8) Tactically speaking, metagame away (you'll have in order to have a prayer of survival).

    9) And the winner is... the player who completes the game in the least number of days. If none make it that far, the winner will be PC who makes it to the farthest chapter in the least number of days.

    Possible rule amendments to the rules highlighted in red above:

    2) ... If your PC is impossible then you can...

    Do we want to allow EEKeepering for illegal race/class/alignment combos? This would just be optional, if one wants to.

    Personally, I think allowing this would add to the fun value, and I don't foresee it resulting in anything insanely overpowered. Frankly, even if it did confer a slight advantage in some way your character is randomly generated to begin with, so if the dice were lucky in that way then great, this is a really difficult type of game to begin with.

    5) No reloading whatsoever... Shall we say that reloads are allowable for some very simple things not related to combat? Eg, you forget to buy ammo before leaving Beregost, i.e., it was simply an oversight that you remembered the second after you area-transitioned.

    If we allow reloading for some things but not others it only leads to confusion and possibly exploits. I vote no.

    Yeah, from that vantage maybe we should keep no-reloading to a strict rule. It's all on the honor system anyway, but might be best not to tempt folks. Anyway, it's open to a vote.
  • WanderonWanderon Member Posts: 1,418
    While I have reloaded for a player mistake in a minimal reload game (forgot to pick up dead companions gear before leaving the area) I would not have considered it had I been playing no reload. The only reloads I allow myself in my own no reload games is for crashes or severe game bugs and I would agree that it might become the dreaded "slippery slope".

    I do usually make a "restart save" right after Gorions death so if the PC dies and I want to start over with the same character I can avoid going through the Candlekeep prologue again altho I would only do this for a "normal" prologue - if I killed Firebead or anyone else other than the assassins (and thus had a serious danger of dying myself) I would start from scratch.

    I won't vote on the EEkeeper use since I don't use EEKeeper or similar tools myself and thus would not utilize the option even if it did exist. That said I am mostly ambivelent about whether or not others should be allowed to use them to overcome "illegal" choices the randomizer comes up with as long as we don't end up with a laudry list of things you can/cannot do with the tools (adding bags of holding, changing available weapons for an illegal class, etc etc.)

    I also have a question about the reroll figure - based on the color code I thought the random reroll amount was a two digit number - is it only a single digit (0-9 vs 00-99)? LOL

    Well, I've chosen the option to re-roll the PC if PC is impossible, and, besides, I've decided to have three possible tries.

    My second attempt

    So, this time everything (nearly) is legit.

    7728 951 10; 7; 7; 21; 6

    A female halfling (one more hobbit))) ranger - beastmaster. It seems I'm bound with halflings.
    Can't be Chaotic Evil though - this can be changed to Good.
    A party consists of Faldorn, Dynaheir, Rasaad and Dorn. Dynaheir came two times - so I've rerolled and got 3 - a secret NPC.

    I've never used such a party - that's the main thing from this thread - it leads to new combinations and stratagies.

    My trird attempt

    Marhorn Littleknight

    Another lucky result!

    2641 789 9; 14; 16; 19; 14

    A male gnome (no, do you believe it - the little chap again?) cleric, pure class, Lawful Evil.

    You know, halflings and gnomes everywhere - rejoice!!!

    Edwin, Kagain, Kivan, Neera. Kagain came two times - so I've rerolled and got 17 - Minsk.

    The interesting part is that in all 3 rolls I didn't get even one thief nor as a PC nor as an NPC.

    With the wish to get a thief I've taken my fourth attempt - the third if you count only possible ones.

    Graorin Dragonsbane

    That's what I've got.

    1011 45 23; 7; 13; 21; 19

    Male, Pick race, fighter, pure class. It's so temping - as I'm able to pick race, and he's a pure fighter, and I've got 45 (two digits) in the second roll, I can count it as 045 and pick his alignment.

    This all leads me to a conclusion Graorin Dragonsbane will try to have at least 14 in his STR and at least 16 in his DEX - in order to have an option to dual-class to a thief.

    His party will include Shar-teel, Dynaheir, Jaheira, Rasaad and Neera.

    After a long cogitation I've decided to go with Graorin Dragonsbane and his group.

    @Wanderon Each digit is for a distinct aspect of the character. The color coding could be refined to give a different color for each digit rather than duplicating yellow and red. I will do that tomorrow.

    Yeah I went back and actually read the directions which clearly point out that one digit is for rerolls and the other for voice set so it's probably not necessary to change the colors - probably a little wishful thinking on my part that I was going to have double digit rerolls LOL!

    Working on another set of 3 now...

    Here's my latest group of three:

    1281 787 15-25-22-19-14 Walnan Wyvernjack
    M Human Bard NE (from LE) 16/18/16/16/10/15
    Two Handed Sword * longbow *
    Khalid
    Tiax
    Safana
    Neera
    Kaigan

    4682 (illegal gnome bard) rerolled to 9060 518 10-5-1-25-28 (3 late) rerolled to 14-2-4-24-19
    9060 is pick-pick-mage-pick so I went with: Marfalcon the Swift
    Male human Illusionist TN and with only 1 reroll managed to get:
    12/18/16/18/9/9 dagger *
    which should allow me to dual class to thief at some point to fill the early thief void with:
    Kaigan
    Alora
    Branwen
    Skie
    Neera
    (Not that it's very likely we would get to Alora or Skie anyway)

    2419 462 11-14-26-29-10 Vicros the Craven
    M Elf Kensai LN Scimitar** dagger**
    18\72/19/17/8/8/12
    Garrick
    Kaigan
    Viconia
    Yeslick
    Faldorn

    Well all three are sort of interesting altho I have never played a kensai and am not too keen to start now.

    The illusionist>thief has a decent party but the extra time needed to dual class is not ideal for a speed game and of course the PC is sort of squishy for a no reload.

    That leaves the bard which other than the lack of a cleric until BG city and the presence of a wild mage is a pretty solid group.

    This also brings up another question - does the random choosing of the party imply that one must keep them in the party as well or would we be free to use or not use them as we wish?

    I will return with my decision on which one to attempt next in a little while...

    Definitely! It's a no-reload challenge that is already hard enough and you should have a chance to influence your run. For example, when there's Neera nearby, everything can slip away in a matter of seconds... So, you should decide if you take with you someone who you're able to take - or not.

    I agree - just wanted to see what others thought about it.

    I couldn't decide between the bard and Illusionist>thief so I drew a card and got the bard!

    Tally Ho!

    Edit: UPDATE - Short game - tried to deal with Tarnesh by himself and Walnan Wyvernjack's bards tale was over at Chapter One: 1 day 9 hours.

    I noticed also that if you delay getting close enough to Tarnesh to get him to engage you in dialoge hoping to get the guards closer first that they walk away very soon and don't seem to come back at all (or for as long as I had the patience to wait) so I guess it's best to take them where they are standing at the start.

    Maybe I'll give the Illusionist a shot before rolling up another 3.

    Or go pick up some companions before going to FAI. That's entirely possible without breaking the game in any way. However, after completing the Nashkel Mine Khalid & Jaheira will be gone AFAIK if you haven't talked to them. Still, with the Bard for example you could have picked up Kagain and Branwen quite easily before fighting Tarnesh/anything.

    EDIT: oops wrong list of NPCs. Still, the point stands.

    @ChildofBhaal599

    Yeah I always take the wand and potions and I generally strip Xzar and Monty too - I asked about this the other day - if it's allowed to take NPCs that are not on your list into the party long enough to collect their donations to your cause (Neera's gem bag, Xzar and Montys potions, Imoens potions and wand etc) - I have been assuming thats OK

    - I knew I should have gone to Beregost once I got the ring and recruited some of my party instead of trying Tarnesh but I didn't want to wimp out LOL.

    New trio to choose from:

    1)8066 773
    F Pick Race Illusionist LE with
    Eldoth, Ajantis, Kaigan, Dorn, Xzar -
    Didn't even roll this one up with no healer or thief altho I could have tried for another illusionist>thief

    2)1491 800
    M Elf Sorcerer NE - 16/19/16/14/8/9 dart * with:
    Kaigan, Kivan, Neera, Sharteel, Faldorn

    3)1552 357
    M Half-elf Druid TN (CG) - 93 on 3rd roll!
    Elfire Oaklord 18-18-16-8-18-15 Scimitar * Sling * with:
    Yeslick, Edwin, Dorn, KIvan, Safana

    Sorcerer & Co have possibilites but I'm going with the druid - one downside from the speed side is having to do Edwins quest ( long distance/time) but he's not near as squishy especially since it's really a waste of spell slots to take Find Familiar at start-up so you have to wait until Nimbul to get the scroll to drop I think (Thalantyr doesn't have it does he?).

    And we're off.....

    I'll take a stab at this. Here's my results:

    6 = female
    3 = elf
    4 = cleric
    7 = priest of helm

    5 = true neutral
    5 = 5 rolls for stats
    1 = female voice set 1

    Now for my party:

    12 - Imoen
    22 - Safana
    03 - Baeloth
    15 - Khalid
    13 - Jaheira

    Initial thoughts: I think we're going to be OK. Five early recruits and one of the best spell casters, who even gets to use the free archmage cloak.

    I'll update this with stats later.
