SCONE WARS!

In ancient times there were two methods of thinking that were polar opposites which caused violence and strife such that this world was shaken to it's very core.

In the depraved wilderness that is the west country, families would settle down to have scones and tea.

There were those that put jam on top of cream...

...And there were those that put cream on top of jam.

To this day the feud continues, the only question is...

Which side are you on?

Both, sometimes at the same time because I'm such a rebel.

Also—if you're not using Devon clotted cream, you're not doing it right. :p

I prefer cornish clotted cream, but that's because I the summer i used to stay with my grandad (in cornwall) a lot and he was right around the corner from a clotted cream manufacturer.

What! Why! Why! Am I the only voice of reason!

You always butter the bread first.

Dairy product. On the bread. FIRST.

    Cream is a dairy product!

In terms of weight, I would like to be a big loser.
Shandyr, if you're in loosing weight, for every thought of cream on top of jam imagine it's broccoli on top of the spinache.
I'm goona get myself some broccoli on top of the spinache or spinache on top of the broccoli.

Yeah but if you put cream on first and you have runny jam sometimes it runs off the side and falls of the scone.

I dont understand why you dont find a peaceful solution and Americanize the process.

Take two scones, jam first then cream on the first, cream then jam on the second. Now the complicated part, take the two scones and make a sandwich out of them. Peaceful, perfection.

Or do the British thing and take a single scone, put jam and cream on one part, then jam on the other, then squeeze them together. Scone Top + Jam + Cream + Jam + Scone Bottom. The simplest solution is usually the best. That way, no matter whether it's upside down or right way up, you'll have it both ways. :P

    Everyone knows dairy before jam!

(Though to be honest, I usually don't even put butter on a piece of toast if I'm going to use jam...)

I find the cream can sometimes to be runnier than the jam...

    ...

I believe it is the jam that is the sticking point...

Not if it's proper clotted cream.

All the time I've eaten scones I've put this on them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulce_de_leche
Why would you use anything else? I don't know.

Interesting, but still heresy against the scone god (cream be upon him).

I have never eaten a scone, but now I want to.
I vote cream cheese on top of bagels.
  • dunbardunbar Member Posts: 1,603
Since when has a scone been a burger? You take one half of the scone, butter it, spread jam on it, put a dollop of cream on top and eat. Then you take the second half and repeat.
    (Admittedly I am a Somerset/Devon halfbreed)

So... What do you do with buns with a symbol of a crucifix, a terrible implement of tortuous death, upon them!

Being cool with the kids... They are referred to as hot cross buns... They even sound angry!

    MwahahahAhahA!

    My kinda food!

Those pictures look like American biscuits. If they taste the same forget that cream and jam nonsense and load it wit lots and lots of butter. And gravy, very good with gravy.

Hot cross buns are very nice, especially when toasted and buttered. What's your opinion on crumpets?
