In the sense that if you say the truth to him he will reject it sure. But in terms of this quote unemployed students and the retired use transit. Plus regular unemployed people do use it as well.
So in the context of this thread the phrase "think before you speak" comes to mind when it comes to the things he says.

Who voted for this dude?
Ordinary people. Not to get into it too much here (since it isn't on topic) but basically he had two main opponents in the election who had a lot of political baggage, and voting for him was a vote against the previous administration in Toronto.
Accomplishing something you dont care about is largely without meaning... striving for something you do not need, and arent certain you even want is the height of ignorance.
Perceptions and image matter, but tend to be quite limiting when externally applied. Impressing others can be useful, but nothing impresses everyone, and most things that impress one alienate another; do what impresses yourself, and will not alienate those you care about.
The worst thing about wisdom is having the perception to see one's own ignorance and absurdities as they truly are; to recognize foolishness in others is no gift, but to recognize it in one's self is an edifying curse.
