Personally I always felt that Neb was quarter Dwarf, quarter Gnome, quarter Goblin and quarter Xvart.

Shorty. I mean really, don't they all kinda look alike?

And if there's anything to complain about, it's the stunning discrepancy between what the head item looks like in your inventory vs. what it looks like in the description.

Don't forget that Neb was the one who helped you escape Angelo and the Flaming Fist! You might not even have made it to Amn if it wasn't for him, show some respect

Wasn't the pic of the head meant as an inside joke?

I seem to remember it's a bloke called ben but I can't remember why they put his head in game.

He's specifically called a hill dwarf, I think, by Unger Hilldark.

"Hill dwarves" is just the name for dwarves (of any kind) that don't live in mountains or below the earth, though.

Personally I always felt that Neb was quarter Dwarf, quarter Gnome, quarter Goblin and quarter Xvart.

But Xvarts are already half gnome! That would give him 5/4s!

Hill, Moutain, Deep, Deurgar, Arctic/Glacier, Wild.... subraces galore, even if we ignored Derro. Which we do, because they are weird and creepy.

Not just weird and creepy but extremely difficult to beat in TOB.

Bah, just drop a box of matches and the Savants get distracted by counting.

My point is that I don't think it refers to a subrace.

Personally, I would like to live in a world where a severed head isn't scrutinized due to race.

Hmm, @CrevsDaak looked this up for me once for my "maddest gnome of all" poll.

    Here's what he said:
"Neb is a Dwarf (checked in BG1:EE) in BG1 and a Gnome that looks like a Dwarf in BG2 (check in BG2:EE), and Crazy Celvan is a Gnome that looks like a Halfling (checked in BG2:EE)."

When I looked up Neb's CRE in BG1:EE, his race was Gnome. And still a gnome in BG2:EE.

Subraces don't automatically carry over between settings. As far as I know, there are no hill dwarf subrace in the Forgotten Realms.

It is pretty obvious that Neb has a dwarf head on a gnome body.

But he looks like a dwarf in both games, and in vanilla BG1 his race is actually Dwarf (I might have checked in vanilla or the devs changed it).

On closer inspection, yeah. In both BG:EE and BG2:EE, his race is Gnome, but his animation is Dwarven Thief. I think maybe he's meant to be a very unkempt Gnome, not like the impeccably well groomed Gnomes like Quayle or Jan or Tiax (if you're going to rule the world, you've got to look good).

Kinda true, but there are also no Mountain Dwarves in Faerun. Iirc, older editions were looser with the terminology, because other campaign settings tend to use the terms Hill, Mountain, Deep, etc. It is not a coincidence you could confuse a Shield Dwarf with a hill dwarf.

Neb isn't the only dwarf gnome out there!
