I just checked out Legend of Grimrock and I was pretty surprised. I didn't think I'd like it, but I thought it was a fun game. They also just released a free level editor too.

If you're talking about GOG.com it also has 50% of disscount right now.

But how about the hard-coding then? I mean, isn't it easier to 'lock' files onto a DVD through burning than just loosely putting them on an USB stick? Also, classic DVD has more style than a small and easily overlookable USB stick. I'd just lose something that small and the game on it with it. :/

What do you mean "Hard-Coding"? You mean copy protection? I believe the copy protection is via the registration process and not related to the media. As for not being able to "not lose" stuff....not really the companies problem, if anything it might spur additional sales. :-)

DVD? Why not a USB stick?

I thought cost was the prohibitive factor with a box set ;)

USB could be made read-only too.

I'd still rather want a classic DVD case with some possible goodies. Reminds me of the good ol' days, you see. It's also just better on the eye. I got a built-in disc reader for a reason, y'know. :p

I can understand that. For me though the only time I use the DVD/BluRay player is to rip the movies I bought to my media server.....Im trying to move away from the easily scratched things to a more durable type of media.

I agree USB is better. I think most people who like DVD format is just for nostalgia and/or they don't intend to actually use it. (ooh look at my pretty printed DVD and cover!!) My DVDs and CDs always get scratched up even my original BG2 disks are all but unreadable. Put it on a USB you will thank me in a year.

Not sure if I missed it, but I couldn't find it anywhere... Does anyone know if they have a more specific date other than November?

As it is, still 3-8 weeks of waiting left!
  • DeeDee Member Posts: 10,447
    @ekster "End of" November. :)

USB is convenient, but I've seen far too many USB flash drives suffer from data degradation. I consider flash drives to be the modern equivalent of floppies - great for carrying files around but not suitable for long term storage.

    What......
so a little scrath on a cd/dvd is better.......... I know you aint saying it, but still.... downloadable content is offcource better..

I don't understand, people say their disc's are unreadable, but all my game and DVD discs work, from playstation 1, 2, xbox 360 and all my PC games Including my original Baldurs Gate and Machines wired for war? so how are they impractical when they can survive years of use. I played Baldurs Gate too death. I must be able to look after my discs :P

Also every DVD I own still works. However Video cassette, they were horrible.

Yir but its outdated.. welcome to the present... even bluray is allready outdated... we need to look further.....
  • Troodon80Troodon80 Member, Developer Posts: 4,110
@Majoca, same here. In fact, I still have the New Zealand Story and Shadow of the Beast for the Amiga. Last I checked, four years ago, they still worked. I no longer have an Amiga, I suppose you could say that the storage medium outlived the machine.

@lordkim, downloadable content is the future, but the future also needs decent broadband infrastructure... Dial-up just doesn't cut it any more.

I dont understand the point you make? Just because something is 'Outdated' doesn't mean it is bad or needs to be changed. I have no problem with looking further to find new ways to do things but plenty of things are outdated but are still used.

Outdated is a word that advertisements and companies have created to make you buy new things to replace what others think are rubbish. Mac has made millions from "Outdated" I still have the Ipod Nano, and it plays my music, why do I need to spend another £100 to have something which has touch screen and can be a different colour but does exactly what my previous nano did, play music, so that £100 is going on something more useful.

If companies concentrated on quality instead of replacing there products to rob you with your eyes open then the world might be a better place.

The Ipad is the best example, pay £399 for a product which you thought was amazing and everyone is after it, a year later it comes with a retina and your previous model no one is interested in and then everyone forgets the last model and you then feel like you need the next one, why didn't they put a 7 megapixel camera built into it when it came out? the technology was about? why doesn't it have a cover built into it? you know the cover that you need to buy with it because the screen will get scratched if you don't have it? oh and you have to buy health coverage just in case the battery goes. by the time your done you spend an extra £200.

I haven't had .this experience I just work at PC world and Currys and see how the industry changes to get more money

Car companies do it, Televisions, cameras you name it. You could say electricity is outdated? we need a new power source... it doesn't stop its usefulness. I think the disc is a good idea and can be improved, bluray is great, the discs could be smaller? faster? lighter? more storage? contain digital copies? additional content you name it. going fully digital may be a bad thing. Companies can easily exploit that.

With digital copies accounts will have to be made, bye bye goes the day where all your friends don't have to have a copy (Age of Empires R.I.P). Newsletters filling your e-mails, losing the feeling of owning the game, charge more money for even less game. at least with a box and a disc and a manual you feel like your getting something. I dont want to pay the same for all The information in zeros and ones. You have to have the internet to play your games, not all the content will be released so you have to wait and buy more DLC than we already do. no more shops with games, everything on the internet so you cant bump into people who are into games so you can talk to them, harder to find recommendations from staff members. Where does it stop? do I have limited downloads? what happens when the company doesn't run anymore? Do I have to make an account? your bank account details will have to be used more often.

Personally I don't think game boxes have to be plastic, I love the CD cases they make out of card, smaller, lighter and environmentally friendly
Maybe looking into packaging discs would be more ideal than digital downloads.

I have dozens of USB sticks and Hundreds if not thousands of DVD's/CD's....I have a far higher percentage of DVD/CD's that have gone bad over the decades and as of yet not a single issue with my USB sticks...but then I don't buy the cheap ones...Im usually using high quality Corsair products. I like having a cloud source liek Steam too but for my "Collecting" Id be happy to switch to USB.

@Majoca: I agree. I also just don't see the appeal of USB sticks at all. Also, making fun of people by calling them 'nostalgic' is the biggest of ironies since we're here on a gaming forum for a +10 year old game. :/

So now we want them to release a physical copy even though it probably won't be profitable. And instead of cutting their losses and using optical media which has never failed me, we want them to buy USB media which is an order of magnitude higher in cost. And they can't use the cheap USB sticks either, they need to use top of the line.

Hmmm, I wonder why they decided against this idea n the first place. They may lose money on each copy sold, but they'll make it up on volume:)
