Not to mention, this much time spent on this project and all they have to show us is concept art? That is one truly frustrating thing about Bioware, but I do suspect it's an EA thing. I think the Bioware dudes do want to share more, but they're held back from it by the EA folks. Glad Obsidian doesn't have that problem on their new title.
Well, probably a good sign, Dragon Age 2 was done within 18 months, at least we've passed that point.
Still, I don't have that much faith in it. You can only play a human and while there are backgrounds, you can't play through them (meaning they're just a little bit of text with the occasional reference) so it sounds like they enjoyed the DA2 style of doing things. I'm out.
"Cinematic designer Jon Perry said that "one level in Dragon Age 3 is as big as all of the levels in Dragon Age 2.""
I'm definitely sure this Jon Perry is covering his back, I bet 'all of the levels in Dragon Age 2' he speaks of is that one recurring dungeon (which probably accounted for 80% of the maps in the game), so if you re-read the quote, it pretty much changes everything. Changes everything into shit. And since when did MASSIVE dungeons = fun? They bore the shit out of me and totally sucks any role playing aspect away for me.
And as for the concept art, it's nice yes but since when has a major blockbuster game ever had bad concept art? I vaguely remember the concept art for Dragon Age 2 being nice, looool
When I think of big dungeons and Dragon Age together I just remember the frustration of going through five levels of Deep Roads and several Fade dungeons without a party.
@State_Lemming: And the annoyance and frustration of having a full backpack when you've only come half-way the whole dungeon complex. I thought that whole 'buy backpack, increase inventory' thing was just silly in Origins, mostly because the backpacks were So. Friggin'. Expensive. Especially at the beginning of the game. Such a waste of precious gold coins. >_<
In one of the later Deep Road levels you can find a codex note poking fun at the original Mass Effect's weight system. Which means they are trying to make a joke about frustrating load limits as you are destroying items so you can fit some Dead Legion Gloves in your pack.
"Great" news indeed. First of all, there aren´t any screenshots and just concept art, because there can´t be any. I´m pretty sure EA lied about the development time, as they said in september, that it is in development for more than 2 years. More than 2 years they were still producing DLCs for Dragon Age 1, not talking about second one.
So you are going to have more customization than DA:O, but only one playable race, right? I guess there won´t be more than 3 classes to chose from, so this superb, best RPG of the universe still won´t have more class/race options than Hexen, 17 years old Doom-clone.
Guess the castle you will get will be just replacement for the camp from Origins, so basically background for, well, this time maybe a full swingers party.
EA is taking advantage of people who need half a decade to realize that their approach WILL NOT EVER change.
But the worst of it all is, that maybe even Wasteland 2, Project Eternity and BG: Enhanced Edition together won´t outsell this "unbelievably great" RPG.
I care not, as long as there are people like Overhaul or Obsidian, so I wish them success with their projects. RPG players and producers, rejoice!
meh, race options are never critical in Dragon Age since it's not a d&d-ish setting. I kinda hope they create a character like Ultima or Gothic's hero.
In defense of Bioware, having a dwarven character in a story that has largely been about human politics would be tricky to pull off. An elf would be easier but since they are second class citizens you would have to change the dynamic of every interaction the PC would have.
Still, I lament that my dead Warden castless dwarf will remain the only one of its kind. :P
They can make up for it by finding an excuse to visit Orzammar or Kal Sharok.
Also, thus far they've introduced features more typical for DA 2 than for DA:O. Doesn't rise my spirits all too high either. I don't want a polished version of that turd as a sequel, as it would probably still be akin to a turd.
Besides the human only limitation what else have they announced that is DA2 related? The only other concrete thing I can think of it that there will be strongholds but that feels more reminiscent of Shadows of Amn strongholds
I will not preorder DA3. I will follow reviews online and from friends and most likely get the game after a time when it is cheaper. I enjoyed DA2 for the most part, even though there are things that I don't like. I look at it as a stand alone game in the DA universe. I enjoy ME3, but not as much as the other 2 ME games. There are plenty of things I don't like about it, and not just the ending. DA2 and ME3 have been talked about enough that I don't have anything new to add. I don't think DA2 was worth $60. For the single player aspect of ME3 I'm not sure it's worth that much. But I still play multiplayer with friends and we have a blast. Plus they've added plenty of stuff to multiplayer for free. I've lost most of my desire to preorder, even though I did preorder BGEE!
The ironic thing about Mass Effect 3 is that most of the people who originally complained about multiplayer are now avidly cheering it on, just because of all the new content and regular challenges. Mass Effect 3 was supposed to be the epic ending to a trilogy, but fell flat in just 10 minutes. In my opinion, Mass Effect 3 was always originally intended to have a bigger focus on the multiplayer component than the single player part, as obviously there's more money to be made through micromanagements and such.
Voiced protagonist, with no option to select voice -> check
Art direction the same Dragon Age Biowarian nightmare -> check
@ again with Inquisition, Templars and the Mages -> check
Elves are still considered lower class citizens etc -> check
Some of these above may be false, or change until release, however, i recently came to realize that whatever Bioware does with Dragon Effec Age 3, the world and the lore involved will remain just as uninteresting to me.
@Mornmagor: Yep, most of those features will be in DA 3. I just hope they'll do away with the fugly art style for the elves. Poor Zevran didn't deserve his face to get messed up like that. Also, DA 3 will almost certainly feature a multiplayer component as well, as EA generally doesn't greenlight games without multiplayer.
@Kitteh_On_A_Cloud I'd rather the original ugly art than the comic manganime nonsense of DA2.
As for the multiplayer, isn't that what all players want/demand and no game will be complete without it? That's waht EA thinks. Here's to another game that has locked out stuff unless you play multiplayer. That pisses me off more than any other single aspect of post EA BioWare.
@reedmilfam: Yeah, that's what I've been saying. I hate DA 2's art style for the elves. They seem to be even slimmer than their DA:O counterparts, almost to the point of looking anorexic (Fenris, for example). The only elves that looked good were Fenris and Merrill, but they were potential banging material, so they had to look good/better than the other elves. What really pissed me off in DA 2 was Isabela, though. Such shameless sexist material there.
@Kitteh_On_A_Cloud Yeah - Isa could have been classy, yet liberated, rather than porn star/cheap date. She would have pissed me off if I cared more - what I mean is that she was so poorly written and conceived that there was no me-to-character connection and, therefore, I disregarded her or anything they tried to say with her. Does that make sense?
Isabela is a pirate and you expect her to be classy? Pirates were filthy scummy thieves who couldn't count to five, drank tons, caught diseases, and banged whores. Her character was perfectly in keeping with that stereotype.

I don't understand how you made it through either DAO or DA2 with these complaints. I can understand the frustration over the human restriction, but everything else seems to be an issue with key components of the game, not flaws but style and story choices that have been present in both games.
Also people do not think through their hate of the dialogue wheel, with the exception of Planescape (and really, is Planescape ever NOT an exception?), you could use the dialogue wheel for any past Bioware game without changing the dialogue.
@reedmilfam: Don't worry, I understood what you were trying to say, and I agree with you. @vortican: So just because of that old stereotype (which isn't even fully true), Isabela had to live up to it? Seems like false and narrow-minded logic to me. She could just as well have been a strong woman without having the whole 'there's-a-STD-named-after-her' thing going on around her. Why couldn't she be more like Morrigan, who also sports a daring outfit, but is a strong-willed and independent woman? I somehow felt Isabela's characterization was insufficiently worked out at times. And at least Morrigan's chest didn't fill up half of the screen when talking to her during dialogues.

Although it isn't very convincing to talk about the emphasis on customization, and then go on to say you'll have to be a human.
Concept art looks decent, but that is hardly a good indicator of quality. http://kotaku.com/5953524/this-dragon-age-iii-concept-art-is-straight+up-stunning
