So for my first playthrough: Evil playthrough. Probably Dorn - Edwin - Montaron - Viconia - Xzar (Dual-classed to Cleric probably) PC Elven Fighter/Mage. This PC will specialize in bow ownage and supporting spells.
For my multiplayer playthrough with my sister: She'll be a Blade, taking Dorn and Xan. I'll be an Avenger, taking Coran and Safana or something like that.
I will most likely multi/dual-class anything that can both cast spells and physically remove threats. As I plan on multiplaying with a fellow gamer, I will surely also add some Bard kit to the team. I thought about the Avenger, but shapeshift comes a bit too late.
Kensai/Mage. Always Kensai/Mage. Unless there's an even stronger class available in BGEE. And i'll be attempting the no reload run on the highest difficulty (done it once before in vanilla). Note that i'm thinking long term, as in transferring this char when BG2EE arrives.
And party will probably be: Imoen - solid character and core to storyline Edwin - best mage, colorful personality Viconia - best cleric, most beautiful female npc, etc Minsc - in BG2 he is kinda rubbish, but very strong in BG1, his berserking ability is also crucial in some fights (like vs sirens). Unless BGEE allows us to split npc pairs, Dynaheir will suffer an "accident". I might reconsider Minsc if i really like that new half orc fighter npc. Kivan - Sick archer, not much more to say. Will be replaced later on by Coran for the extra thieving abilities, when Imoen dual classes into mage.
Pc Wizard Slayer-Dorn-Viconia-Eldoth-Safana-and Imoen as Transmuter
How will Imoen be a Transmuter? You can't dual from a Thief to a specialist mage (unless BGEE uses some bizarre mix of BG1 and BG2) and I'm not sure that Shadowkeeper will work with BGEE when it's released
Despite my original poll answer, I'll be playing a neutral or lawful evil elf fighter/mage, with Dorn, Viconia and Edwin, still deciding about my final choice of the others...

i edit her kit, because i already have safana as full thief and I dont like all the other mages in BG 1..:)
edit: wait forget that, Let's not forget you can dual-class into a specialized mage kit in BG1 proper. Imoen can become a Conjurer, Enchanter, Illusionist, Invoker or Transmuter.
I was considering trying out what I think of as the 'canon' charname*, or the race/class combo which I think makes the most sense given the timeline and the character's environment growing up: a human mage.
My reasoning: 20 years is given as your canon age, which makes it damned hard to explain elven and dwarven characters. As for the class, you were raised by a mage in one of the largest libraries in the world, probably one of the easiest places ever for an apprentice mage to learn his craft. It fits the story well.

The wife and I have decided on a Skald protagonist, with me tagging along as an Archer. Probably start a second game as well with are Sorcerer/Barbarian combo per the usual.

But seriously though now that we know that the shapeshifter gets one shapechange at level 1 I will be playing a shapeshifter.
