I have been thinking of the mascot idea and I am sadly going to say it probably won't be implemented. It's seems like a lot of work (drawing) for one person (for consistency) to do in a month, then more work to come up with a personality that everyone would enjoy and not detract from their experience.
Random out-of-the-box thinking incoming: a "mascot dot" takes only pressing a key from start to finish. Just think of it as a digital pet rock.
But the fourth wall breaking dialog will still be present. This is my main concern with it ATM. Creating a persona that is enjoyable for everyone to read and doesn't detract too much from the content.
Volo and Elminster are an example of it working nicely. The Microsoft talking paper clip is an example of it going horribly wrong. There are more paperclips than there are Volo's.
