I decided to abandon my Diglett because it was too weak defensively. Now I am struggling to think of a pokemon to replace it on my team... I have thought of the aforementioned Salamence (depending on how lucky I am), Rockruff, Dewpider, or Wishiwashi. Any suggestions? I would prefer something I haven't used much before so things like Abra, Gastly, and Zubat are out.

Also, I finally got access to an ice stone so I can evolve my Vulpix. Thank Arceus for the Poke Pelago!

Rockruff is pretty good. Solid attack and decent speed. Its movepool is pretty bad though, you'll be using Rock Throw and Bite for most of the game. It evolves very early at level 25 during the day for Sun and night for Moon.

Get a bug type. Bugs are the master race.

I decided to go with rockruff. @Artemius_I is right about the bad move pool, but I bred mine with an arcanine to get fire fang and thunder fang on it so that its moveset wouldn't be so bad. I also taught it rock tomb with a TM. I think it also learns brick break by TM after evolving so I will give it that as well. Too bad I have the midnight form... It may look cooler but it lacks the signature Accelerock move the other one gets...

A word of warning in advance for anyone still mid-way through the game: if you're using a Crabrawler be aware you cannot evolve it until near the end of the game as it requires levelling up near an Icy Rock (not to be confused with an Ice Stone) which is in a late-game area. Since Crabrawler is acquirable early I thought this could be useful to know.

Also, a lot of the new evolutions seem to be slower than their pre-evos.

Btw, Midnight Lycanroc is pretty bad compared to its day version isn't it... 30 less base speed for a mediocre boost in defenses. A shame too, since it looks awesome.

That's okay, I train my pokemon based on looks anyway. But thanks for the info.

@Artemius_I Seems like you are much farther than I am... I guess that makes sense considering how much putzing I have been doing...
  • ThacoBellThacoBell Member Posts: 12,235
I always treat a new Pokemon game like an ecological survey, putzing is good.

So today came my game and I'm still right at the beginning, just starting with the island trials.

I was wondering though, is there a gadget like in ORAS, which tells me if there are pokemon in the area I haven't caught yet? Or searching for certain specimen I already caught.
My pokedex/mon hybrid seems only offers a normal worldmap.

I caught a Slowpoke, and the description says that people eat its tail. Thats news, people eating pokemon, at least for me

@Yamcha No, DexNav is gone, unfortunately :( That is one thing I think is really a downgrade, one of the best additions from ORAS. It's really annoying because there's stuff like the aforementioned Bagon that you'll probably never find by accident.

That Slowpoke tails thing has been around as early as... Gold and Silver, I think? Not to say this game's Pokedex entries aren't completely savage, I mean, there's some horrific stuff (Pokedex entries in spoilers):
Araquanid (Moon entry): "Despite what its appearance suggests, it cares for others. If it finds vulnerable, weak Pokémon, it protectively brings them into its water bubble."

    Aww! But then...

Araquanid (Sun entry): "It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown."

    But there's more!

Bewear (Moon entry): "This Pokémon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were squashed by its hug."

Direct references to dying. IN A POKEMON GAME. What's more, they're everywhere.

The current poedex entries seem to be much more in line with the original red/blue. There references of people eating/hunting pokemon for trophies and death was a much more common theme.

Indeed, a great many of them are about pokemon eating and being eaten by both humans and each other.

The ghost/ground one seems particularly disturbing.

There is one pokemon I recognized as being based on a real life animal. Mareanie and Toxapex are both based on a starfish called the "crown of thorns". The crown of thorns is a very destructive animal that eats coral and can do serious damage to coral reefs. If you find a wild Mareanie it will attack wild Corsola instead of your pokemon. Both the dex and several characters will also talk about it preying on Corsola. The crown of thorns is a type of starfish called a "brittle star" and Mareanie and Toxapex are classified as the "brutal star pokemon". Neat stuff, huh?

    Mareanie and Toxapex:

Pretty sure the dancing birds are based on the birds of paradise. They have elaborate dancing rituals to attract mates.

this was 20years ago, do you have any examples?
  • ThacoBellThacoBell Member Posts: 12,235
@Yamcha Sure thing, paraphrasing for space.

Nidoking is said to use its tail to crush the bones of its opponents.
NInetails will curse you for grabbing one of its tails.
Golbat gorges on blood even to the point where it cannot fly anymore.
No one has ever returned from suspected Victrebel habits.
Lapras were hunted to near extinction.

There are more, but I think this is a good sample.

Ok... So I just caught a shiny Magnemite in my game... I am starting to get worried because I am not usually this lucky...
  • TheArtisan TheArtisan Member Posts: 3,277
@Tresset Did you SOS chain? Because I've heard that Pokemon summoned by SOS give more EVs, have a chance to have their hidden abilities and a higher shiny chance. If not then yeah, pretty lucky.
  • TressetTresset Member, Moderator Posts: 8,268
@Artemius_I nope, I was just looking for a Meowth to catch and evolve to show to someone when the Magnemite appeared.

I was not aware of this factor of the SOS chain though... I will have to keep it in mind...
  • TressetTresset Member, Moderator Posts: 8,268
Actually... now that I think about it, they may have increased the base chance of getting a shiny to a highger level. IIRC in 6th gen the base chance for encountering a shiny in the wild was something like 1 in 8000. I recall meeting a random NPC in Moon that said my chances for encountering a shiny were about 1 in 4000. That would mean that they doubled the base shiny chance...

I believe the shiny rate has been 1/4096 or something like that since 6th Gen. It definitely felt higher in ORAS, as I managed to get shiny Whismur and Latias in that game alone, when I only ever got one shiny in the wild within the entire previous few generations, which was Graveller in DPP where the rate was still twice as low.
  • TressetTresset Member, Moderator Posts: 8,268
@Artemius_I Yeah, you are right... I checked Serebii and they doubled the base shiny rate from around 1 in 8000 for gen 5 and earlier to 1 in 4096 like you said for gen 6.

Heh, this doesn't change the fact that my luckiest shiny ever came from my Soul Silver game in which I caught an outstanding potential adamant Ho-oh. I still have it, naturally.

I remember my first Emerald playthrough. I ran into a shiny Poochyena, before the game gave me pokeballs. Man that sucked.

I remember playing emerald and EV training all the pokemon in the pokedex ( well at least trying to, I think I only did the first 100 or so, took me over 400 hours) and I had 3 shiny wurmples and a shiny poochyena, good times

I could never have EV trained back then. I found it tedious enough in X and Y.

well I did play it on an emulator so I was cranking it to 1500% game speed, so it was almost tolerable loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

although X and Y made EV and IV training infinitely better though, can breed your perfect gods then EV train them right away with silly soccer ball mini games hahaha

I never thought I'd end up missing horde battles! I was so sick of Super Training the mons with that 'rapid-fire football' style and it was slower than getting 50 EVs per battle.

SOS seems okay as an alternative but it's still slower (and more annoying).

I used to wonder what the big deal was with all the kids "Eevee training"
