OOC: Sanctuary can only be cast on the priest, afaik. I remember the spell description in BG being like that. Otherwise it would be the equivalent of arcane invisibility, which is 3rd level. I'd be really surprised if Sanctuary can target anyone but the caster.
OOC: In BG, it is only the caster. Pretty sure that in 2nd Ed PNP, it is a touch spell. But, it would let Aerie go talk to the guy in the cage, which has to count for something, doesn't it?
It IS a touch spell in 2e. So Aerie can protect someone other than herself. Who to cast it on…?
OOC: Oh my gosh, this changes EVERYTHING!!
Okay... I'm leaning toward casting it on Alora. That way she can lockpick the mage's cage without worrying about the giant coming after her.
Or, perhaps we could choose someone else as bait to lure the giant elsewhere, and they'd be protected by Sanctuary (assuming that the giant still chooses to follow them, because in BG, the monsters can't even initiate an attack on sanctuaried creatures...?).
Another option is to cast it on a party member who can safely climb down the balcony and find another means of getting the rest of the party down--look for a ladder or something.
Or I could save it and cast it on Zando or Culum in case either of them are in danger of being crushed in the midst of a battle.
OOC: I would prefer to cast it on Alora, she can enter the cave safely, unlock the cage and has a higher chance of making argue the two head. On an other note: how big is the stream in the middle of the cave? Can we pass it without trouble?
OOC: If between Aerie and Anomen we can cast three sanctuary spells we could cast one on Aerie and one on Alora, they could then enter the chamber and Alora could try to pick the lock. Aerie could then cast the third Sanctuary on Culum's dad.
We could do this while everyone else is attacking the giant from the balcony (I think we have to attack him because with Sanctuary the giant only ignores us if he has another target to go for and even then I think he gets a save v Magic).
Of course the plan falls to bits if Alora can't pick the lock ...
@LadyRhian When we went to the temple to get healed I mentioned that I wanted to buy new lockpicks, was I able to get any?
OOC: Anomen is too arrogant to ask Torm for Sanctuary. He only has one spell allotment which he used on detect evil.
OOC: My concerns: Sancing Alora so she can unlock the cage unhindered works for her, but not for poor Zando. Sancing someone to lead the giant away works, but there is no exit strategy yet for that character. Where are they to go to get away from the giant? To the Minitaurs or the floating boulder and hope to escape away from the giant as it starts to interact with those? Maybe an option but could fail and then you have one poor soul versus the Ettin instead of the whole party.
OOC: It is also full from eating meat. We can go get any left over meat from the Minitaur room and see if we can offer the giant a trade. Salted meat (or two minitaurs) for Culum's father.
OOC: The salted meat is a good idea. And I think you are right about using Sanctuary, at some point we are going to have to fight the giant so there is not much point in getting Zando out of the cage first. We might as well leave him there until the right is over.
I think we should forget about Sanctuary and fetch the salted meat instead (though I still fancy having a go at making it start a fight with itself).
Aerie could lure the giant away and cast Sanctuary on herself, leaving him confused, while everyone else rescues Culums dad and by the time the giant gets back, we are all gone!
How about we get the salted meat and I will try the tactic of telling the awake head that the sleeping head told me to take Zando away to fatten him up.
If that doesn't work we offer him the meat.
And if that doesn't work we fight him from the balcony.
good thinking Alora, we could poison the meat, or put somniferus on it! Like my grandmother used to do, to put all her children to sleep. They were a very big family, you know.
"Okay!" After much hard thinking amongst their group, Aerie had finally come to a decision. "So, if I understand everyone's input correctly, here is our plan: we take the salted meat from the minitaur room, and offer a trade, the meat for Zando. If he rejects our trade, then try to trick the giant by saying its other head wished to fatten up Zando for them to eat.
"If it turns hostile, we have to attack from the balcony. Jaheira should cast Bless on us before we begin, and I still think Jan's Grease on the floor could come in handy, if he can cast that far. If worst comes to worst, I'll cast Sanctuary on Alora so she may unlock Zando's cage unhindered and hopefully escape with him. Is everyone ready?"
Aerie locked eyes with everyone amongst her group. Her hands were shaky, but it was a lot to think about at once, and she was a little proud of herself and her friends for coming up with their strategy.
I was going to attempt to trick him first then offer the meat. We can only attempt to trick him if one of the heads is asleep. The idea was that I would tell the awake head that the sleeping head told me I could take Zando away to fatten him up.
If that doesn't work I thought we could then offer to trade for meat.
But I'm happy to try it the other way round if you prefer.
such a shame we do not have a bard with us! Culum, are you sure you don't want to be a bard when you grow up? Imagine the fame you could get telling stories about us!
Alora will creep up to check that one of the heads is asleep. If it is she will very confidently greet the other head, saying: "I'm here to take the prisoner to feed him up as agreed." She will then start tying her rope to the balcony in preparation to climb down.
"If you were a bird," Jaheira grunted, "you would die childless." As for being a bard, Arkanis hadn't the slightest chance in all of the realms! Now, however, they faced larger challenges, such as the high risk that Alora would get herself squished flat. If so, there would be one hell of a reckoning for that mongrel ettin!
Okay, you get the meat. The two Mini-taurs snort happily when they see Anomen and follow you back to the area of the Herbivore exhibit. Cue Alora @Permidion_Stark.

OOC: I wonder how happy they are going to be when I trade them for Culum's father.
Alora sneaks out onto the balcony and checks that one of the heads is asleep. If it is, she will wave to the other head and say: "Sorry I'm late, the traffic was terrible." She will then start tying her rope to the balcony so she can climb down. "I'm here to pick up the chap in cage as agreed. I'll take him away to fatten him up and then bring him back when he's got some meat on him."
The Giant jerks around when it sees Alora. "What yer sayin'?" it asks. It sound like it's gargling marbles. The second, sleeping head jerks up. "What's happn'in, Burt?" it asks.
"Lil' girl, Jimmy." The first head replies.
"She wanna be eaten?" Jimmy asks.
Burt smirks. "We cud do that. She's hardly more than a bite…"
The figure in the blue robe has swung around to look at you as well. Calculation is in his eyes.

OOC: if Ihappen to be offlime during the fight, Jan will cast and act according to what our leader tells him to.
Arkanis starts humming a dashing tune.
