"I hope you know what you're doing," Jaheira said, this time to Neera. This rope idea seemed to be a bit drastic, and not without a likelihood of ending badly.
OOC: Congratulations! You are this portal's 10,000th customer! *baloons begin to fall* You've just won a year's supply of Portalcream skin care products, the cosmetics that make your blemishes literally DISAPPEAR!
Okay. Neera appears in the room that Alora and Ajantis have just left. The rope disappears with her. However, Alora discovers that just around the corner from the room is… the room with the rubble, and the two halves of the party are quickly reunited.
OOC: Anomen will NOT discover how bad wounds from an enraged cat biting and clawing can be! (Suffice to say "Cat Scratch Fever" IS a thing, and he'd need a cure disease for it.)
OOC: Great, now I'm going to have that song running through my head all day.
"Thank Helm! It is good to see you all again even if the parting was brief. I wonder what the point of the portal was originally. It doesn't seem like a trap."
After 100' the corridor turns east, then south again after 20'. After 30', the corridor ends in a door to the south, then continues to the west. Around the corner where the corridor turns west is another door, and corridor turns south again afterwards. The door is not trapped, but it is locked, and there is silence within. It takes Alora a few tries to unlock the door, as the lock is old, somewhat rusty, and slow and difficult to turn.
When you finally open the door, you see a breeze stirring dust on the floor from two vents in the ceiling. This irregularly shaped room seems to have been used as a forge. To the north and east is the actual hearth with the anvil, and tools are scattered about, leaning around the walls of the room, but the coals have burned to ash long ago, and are cold and dead. To the south and east is another door leading south.
Alora will give the room a thorough search, stirring the ashes to see if anything has been dropped there. If she finds nothing she will go through the door and continue south.
The room to the south is 20' by 20', and is stacked with logs, apparently for the forge that once burned in the Smithy. However, there is a large hole in the south-eastern part of the room. A large iron ring has been attached to the floor with iron staples, and it seems as though is is there to provide a means of access to whatever lies below, but it is far enough down (more than 30') that you cannot see it from this room with your light.
If the people with torches move back is Alora able to see anything with her infravision?
If not Alora will tie her rope to the iron ring and then slowly climb down into the hole until she is able to see something. She will also ask Minsc to hold the rope just in case her knot slips or the iron ring isn't secure. He can also be ready to haul her back up in an emergency.
OOC: Question, if we get the chance later to buy spell scrolls and stuff are we limited to spells within Baldur's Gate or 2e in general? Might give me a reason to get my 2e books I've never actually used out. XD

OOC: Minsc panics and yanks on the rope so hard that Alora is bounced off the ceiling on the way out?
Ajantis moves to the edge of the hole, ready to introduce evil things to the stabby point of his sword. Only after Alora is out of the way, of course. Wouldn't do to skewer the only thief.
Alora sees nothing below. When she goes down the rope, she discovers that the hole goes down 40' before coming out in a cavern where the hole is about 20' above the level of the floor, Using her infravision (because carrying a lit torch down a rope is… NOT a good idea), Alora finds herself in a shadowy cavern which sounds larger than she can see. All she *can* see is shadows, and she hears far off-skittering noises and the moaning of the wind.
Alora will climb back up the rope to tell the others what she has seen.
"I think I should climb back down because I can see in the dark and can tell if anything is creeping up on us and then the rest of you can climb down to join me. We can light torches when we get down."
"Perhaps..." Aerie pondered her idea, resting her chin on her fist. "Do you think it is safe to climb back up, just in case we were to find a dead end?"
OOC: I'm leaving for camping tomorrow, and will be gone for five days. Aerie will generally avoid fighting, but support with spells when appropriate. Assuming we rest again at some point, she'll have x2 Cure Light Wounds, 1 Sanctuary, and 1 Sleep at her disposal. Although she might drop Sanctuary for another CLW if the party is grievously injured.
"I'm not sure I like the idea of leaving our only escape route unguarded. Perhaps Alora could relock the door to this room before we head down? If anyone has any spikes we could wedge those under the door, as well, for some added protection."
"That's a good idea. I'll go and lock the door. Then we know nothing can creep up on us. Of course, if anything happens to me you'd all be locked in the dungeon with no way to get out. But that's okay, I'm sure nothing bad will happen."
"Yes, you reveal a distinct flaw in my thinking. Perhaps it would be best to simply close the door and hope for the best. Or go back to the store room and gather up chisels to use as wedges on the door, leaving it unlocked. At some point we'll have to simply pray that Tymora smiles kindly on us in this instance, and that Helm gives us strength to face whatever might confront us."

*Gulp* "Here we go. I have a bad feeling about this. . . but what's the worst that could happen?"

I would literally cry IRL.

Perhaps it would be better to send someone who can defend themselves down first like Arkanis.
