False. I got a 4-switch model for Christmas in 1981, followed by a Vic-20 the next year. Both of these devices connected manually to the analog TV set we had at the time (of course, *all* televisions were still analog at that time) so to use them I had to flip a switch in the back of the set so that it would accept the alternate input.
