Vaga thanks Guston for his swift aid with freeing the captives from their restraints with a firm fist bump on Guston's shoulde. His mighty monks fist can crush through platemail but alas, this strenght had apparently not reached his teeth yet. He made a promise to himself that he would chew on wood and metal every night from now on until his teeth could grind down stone! And then, in the future after he has found what it is he is searching for, he could start his own monk order - The Order of the Sharp Teeth. Ahem, he quickly puts such thoughts into his mental cabinet and focuses back to the tasks at hand.
Vaga approaches the surrendered orcs and speak in a tutoring and fatherly voice; "Friends! Too long have you been astray from the true path, too long have you lived like savages, filthy cockroaches rummaging around in the excrement of the world. Rise up, I say, RISE into new and glorious beings. Set aside your aggression, your lust for carnage and pillage and embrace that talking is a better solution than fighting. Do as I do and chose trust over mistrust, benevolence over malevolence. Go now, and do good. Help your fellow humanoids, suppress your aggression and let it be replaced with calmness, tranquility and.. and... and calmness!"
Vaga looks at the orcs, he has a very strong feeling that he is indeed reaching their hearts with his magnificent wisdom. Did anyone notice he stuttered a little there at the end? No. He was sure noone noticed. He feels a slight sting of shame that perhaps he should have listened to the Masters of his order a little more so he had better remember their teachings. Bah.. but what did they know anyways, they couldn't help find what he was looking for. He will help these orcs find theirs though, he was sure of it!
He adresses the scorpionman and the halfling now; "You can release these orcs now. They will leave in peace now that I have teached them the proper ways and the folly of their actions."
Vaga walks away from the orcs, but before he has come to far, he unbuckles his club, turn around and tosses it to the front orc. "Here, so that you can defend yourself if the need arises."
He then continue moving towards to Kaled. He too want to hear what the captives have to say about the attack and the caravan shipment.
The orcs look confusedly at each other after being suddenly preached to by a random dwarf they had never before seen in their lives. Assuming they even understood him, it doesn’t really look like they’re buying it. The scorpionman simply shakes his head as the halfling binds the orcs with animated vines.
The freed members of the caravan look grateful for the party’s help. One of them, a large human man with a simple brown shirt and pants, can’t help but smile as he says “We’re all here, aye. We knew better than to cross orc barbarians with weapons.” He looks around for a moment, then says “I recall them taking the materials and supplies to that big tent over there.” He points towards a large gray tent in the back of the camp. “We can carry most of ‘em back to the wagons, but we might need some help to get all of it.”
At this point, Miranda speaks up, saying “We have some horses nearby. They can help pull the heavier stuff.” She leaves to go and get them.
Again, Kaled has that bad feeling, that this went way too easy. But he too can be lucky one day right?
"Vaga, i suggest you to pick up that club. The orcs would think you try to trick them in attacking us just to kill them after. Or... well, maybe that's a good plan, just leave that club right there."
Kaled then turns to the odd halfling and his even odder companion again. "So for who we can thank the help we got?"
The halfling beams brightly and says “My name is Harvey Toetwiddler! My friends are Butter, Pooky, and Bill! And the big guy is-“ “Ixion,” the scorpionman interrupts. “Don’t go spreading it around. I don’t need a reputation.” He turns to the orc prisoners and yells “Get up, meat! It’s time to move!” The orcs hurriedly stand up and start to move, with the two wolves, Pookie and Bill, keeping watch over them. Ixion gets behind them and pushes them along. Harvey and Butter lag behind them, scanning the area as they go.
At this time, Miranda returns with the horses and says “Too bad, that big one could have helped carry the load back to the wagons. Well, let’s get started. It’s getting late.”
With the horses and freed caravan workers with you, you make your way to the large tent. It is easy to find the materials, as they are quite large. The workers get started hauling away the materials. However, you see more than just the materials in the tent. Inside you find 30 gp, an inidentified magical belt, and a scroll of Detect Evil*.
Harvey stops and lets Fiora close the distance between them, while Ixion scoffs and keeps going, shoving the line of orcs forward. Harvey smiles at Fiora and says “Don’t worry, Butter is made of tougher stuff than anything these orcs can throw at him, right Butter?” The saint bernard that he is riding lets out a happy bark and licks Fiora’s face again. This causes Harvey to let out a chuckle. “I think he likes you,” The halfling man says. “And I can see why. You care a lot about other people, right? That makes you a kindred spirit.”
He suddenly looks up, and his smile fades. “It looks like rain,” he mutters. Turning back to Fiora, he says “I hope we meet again, preferably when we have time to relax.” He and Butter then turn away and continue after the line of orcs, pausing only once to wave goodbye.
Being amazed and quite relieved that he didn’t have to fight anyone, Guston then searches the rest of the camp for gold and treasure the orcs may have kept. He looks for high quality weapons, as well, specifically for a good knife that he can give Vaga.
As he is searching, he says to Kaled, “You may have a use for this scroll of Detect Evil. Perhaps you can scribe it to your spell book?”
Guston searches the tents as the others start loading materials onto the horses. Unfortunately, he finds nothing of value, not even a spare dagger.
When you all finally finish loading up the horses, you can see that the sun has set. Night falls over the camp, and you notice dark clouds forming overhead. The large man, who introduces himself as Nate the caravan master, walks up to the party and says “Welp, we got the horses loaded, but it looks like a storm is coming. We should all probably just pick a tent and wait it out. We won’t get far in the rain.”
"Very well. You all take a tent, I'll stay outside."
Vaga walks around finding the best defensive vantage point and then sits down as per his usual routine. He prepares his psyche for a long night. He tries to reach a semi-awake trance that let him get some minor rest while still being awake enough to hear his surroundings. He doesn't always do this successfully though and have been known to fall asleep out of sheer fatigue.
As she mingles with the crowd, Fiora notices something a little... odd about their behavior. A few of them keep glancing over at the horses, and when they speak, there is a slight edge to their voices. They repeat noncommittal answers to questions, as though they aren’t really listening.
After a while, Nate walks up and asks “Aren’t you tired? You all had a big day today. You should probably get some sleep.” Rain starts to fall on the camp.
Vaga stands up and chats a bit with Fi and spreads some wisdom to the civilians. He's surprised that his words of wisdom seem to.. not reach their hearts, as if they are not really listening at all. Something is odd, this entire operation feels staged.
Vaga finds Kaled in the camp and asks in a hushed, neutral tone; "That scroll you have now.. how about trying it out. Right here, right now."
Should I wait for your roll before writing that my guy sense something? Maybe write somethig like "Vaga tries to assess the situation" rather than "Vaga feels something something" ?? @Nimran
@Skatan Yes, that is how these mechanics work. If one player’s check succeeds, other characters don’t necessarily share the result. In some cases, such as Vaga’s critical success in the inn, Vaga alone received that information, because Vaga is the only one who made the check. Vaga can then choose to share this information with the party if he wants, and they receive the information he relays to them. If one character makes a successful check and hasn’t shared the information received by the successful check, then no other member of the party would realistically know about it unless they make a check themselves to get that information. I am terribly sorry, I should have explained this at the beginning but it slipped my mind.
"You are right Vaga, better do something useful, after we were left out the fight." Kaled try to scribe the scroll to his spell book, then tries out the spell.
@Nimran Thanks for the info. I'll adjust from here so I follow your rules. But no worries, I should have asked earlier as well, but I was just into Rik's way of doing things which was very much about the narrative rather than rolls. But let's just do it correctly from here
As you are all talking, Nate walks up and says “Well, friends, what do you say we all get some sleep? You all seem tired. One of our boys can stand watch, so you can go on and get some shut-eye.”
"Well, you areright. We all deserved a good sleep after this day. But don't worry about the night watch, the captivity must surely more tiresome, than our uneventful track. We are more rested and we share the duty amongst us." Kaled tell his discovery to the others, he tries not to alert the caravan members the best he can. "Interesting. It seems, that our newly escaped friens are not entirely honest to us. They are not the peaceful people that they show themselves. Or maybe i'm just new with this spell. Fiora, can you confirm our suspicion?"
"Let's just talk to them, tell them we know they are up to something. By showing them honesty and integrity I am sure they will rewards us back with it to. Who's with me on this?" Vaga, says this without his usual assurance since he's noticed lately this crew of his doesn't always seem to want to follow the same path as he do.
Fiora sees what Kaled can see. Nate sees her casting a spell and asks “What sorcery is that? You lot have magic in your group?” He asks the question loudly enough that his fellows all turn to look at the party. They silently stare at you.
