856. When one of the forums members who helped get the thread back on track makes an attempt to fix the number system 857. When that attempt gets accidentally (I think) ignored and a 2nd attempt is made 858. When said forumite is sorely tempted to reset the number count like some sort of mad god
Upvotes are indeed artificial, and they don't accurately measure what a forumite brings to the community. But they are not meant to determine the value of a forumite. They're just there to encourage people to contribute more to the forum.
450. When you find that a casual observation that you made has inspired a serious discussion, and you cannot help but feel amused at how unpredictable the future can be.
451.) ...when someone makes a casual observation that a reaction is not worth 2 points anymore and you wonder why. After all what do points matter?
452.) ...when someone posts one and the same poem on at least 3 different places on the forum. And someone else misunderstands that as an attempt to farm forum reactions for one and the same content.
###. When "someone else" keeps on misunderstanding "someone".
@Shandyr I posted that poem in the "Three words story maker thread" so that people who don't visit the activity page or don't know about it can read it. Secondly, I posted it on your wall just thinking that it would save you the trouble of searching the poem from the depths of the original activity page thread in which I posted it several months ago. And I made that clear several times. I just wanted to spread a few smiles, and now you imply that as reaction farming. And I don't get it why you are posting this as a reply to that comment of mine. Can't we just do away with all this misunderstanding and think simple? This discussion is getting unnecessarily complicated, and I don't think I like it.
872. When the status quo of the number system has to be restored with Flex Tape although the current number is probably also wrong 873. When you suddenly realize that you practically live on the forum but still only spend your time commenting on the same less than ten threads religiously 874. When posting on the forum is the first thing you do when you're done with your routine in the morning and the last thing you do before you go to bed on the same day 875. When a normally slow thread suddenly blows up your "Participated Discussions" page so quickly that you can barely react 876. Ditto to the meme thread in sudden quick bursts before it dies again
883. When the cat obsession is real even though that dog picture is cuter
884. When you once again wake up the next morning and immediately check the forums because you've been playing Baldur's Gate since you were 12 and are just a bit obsessed
885. When you have a personal story as to how and why forum reactions encouraged you to be an active member of a community for the first time, but don't want to post it and derail the thread further.
I have consciously not clicked on any of the posts for various reasons.
And I would add these thoughts that I haven't seen expressed: I have noticed lately that traffic on this forum has slowed considerably from what it used to be, yet it still gives the illusion of being a very lively forum. That is because I see the same approximately two dozen or so people (maybe fewer) constantly posting and liking each other's posts.
This phenomenon results in a kind of echo-chamber, or bubble, that can lead the participants to very skewed and even false impressions and opinions about a variety of things concerning gaming, other off-topic subjects, and even life in general.
I still enjoy checking the posts in this forum every day, but I usually only comment or participate any more in topics directly related to gaming, and I try to keep even that very casual. I try to avoid posting anything personal the way I used to. I've stared thinking lately that's not a very good thing for me to do. Sometimes I still enjoy joining discussions about philosophy or history.
Every once in a while, I start to perceive the high points-getters of the forum as a kind of social clique, almost like you might see among middle school kids, and you're either part of the in-crowd or you're not. If you're not part of the in-crowd, any post you make is likely to be ignored. Over my history with this forum, I have variably been kind-of sort-of one of the "cool kids", and then not really. Social cliques are very fickle with their ins and outs, and he who lives by the clique, dies by the clique.
That doesn't bother me; it just makes me shrug, smile, read what I'm interested in, post if I feel like it, and then I go read something else. I could almost have made this same post in the "Express your Meh" thread.
@BelgarathMTH How does lesser activity about IE/ Off-topic material in comments make you stop sharing your comments? To fight the problem of "false impressions and opinions", as you call it, it would help to actually hear your alternative point of view. And hear it often.
