The door is unlocked and she hears nothing. She does not find a trap. This area seems to have been in some kind of explosion or earthquake. Stairs once led up and out of this area. Rubble covers the floor and blocks the stairs. Through cracks in the rubble, you catch a glimpse of the red glow outside of the palace.
The room left is also Z-shaped. The corridor ahead is about 35' feet long, leading up the blocked stair. To the south, another corridor runs 30' to another door leading south.
As she passes to the south, she feels something weird to the east. Like something is hidden there.
"I found a secret door! There's bound to be something interesting behind it. Probably lots of treasure!" Alora goes through the secret door and heads east.
Four statues dominate the room, one in each corner. Each statue is of a young girl in a different pose. No two statues look alike. Between the two statues on the east wall is a plush chair. Four smaller chairs surround the central chair. A leather-covered book rests on the seat of the central chair. Between the statues on the north wall you see a 4' long beetle with a striped shell resembling a tiger's skin.
As Alora opens the door, the beetle starts coming towards her, mandibles making a chittering noise.
Alora is still feeling weak from her poisoning (and her ill-advised trip into the red mist) so she is not going to fight. Instead she runs and hides behind the fighters.
As Alora opens the door, the beetle starts coming towards her, mandibles making a chittering noise.
OOC: The noise that insects and arachnids make in Baldur's Gate, IWD and NWN really freaks me out. I'm glad they don't do it in real life (or if they do I'm glad that I can't hear it).
The beetle's carapace makes a crunching noise, and it cracks a bit, but it's still moving.
OOC: My parents once set off a roach bomb in a roach-infested apartment (and building). Apparently, all the roaches went into their apartment to die. And they had to walk on them to get to the broom and dustpan. You want a creepy noise? Insects crunching under your feet- there's your creepy noise!
"A mighty tome, probably full of interesting facts. I look forward to perusing it," says Alora attempting to sound knowledgeable because she hopes to impress Edwin.
Careful, the Order speaks of ancient books that change the gender of its reader, or worse going mad at just a glimpse. But they do speak of other Tomes that increase your flexibility or stength or cunning after reading them.
Alora had always suspected that reading could be bad for you and now she has had it confirmed by no less a person than Anomen. "I wasn't really going to read it," she whispers, "I was only going to look at the pictures."
The book appears to be a diary. The diary of Princess Argenta. The last entry stops on the day of the disaster, apparently. "Today, my love arrived riding his noble dragon like the great hero he is. He swept me into his arms and proposed marriage. Naturally, I acted reluctant. It wouldn't do to seem too enthusiastic. But when I saw the forlorn look on his face, I immediately relented. We kissed, then we set the wedding date. We will be married in two weeks, when Ellis' service with the Knights of the White Drakes ends. We will invite the entire Kingdom."
Alora reads the diary and then starts making barfing noises. "Princess Argenta sounds like a soppy girl!" She tosses the book back on the chair.
She is, however, intrigued by the statues. Are they all of the same girl or of different girls? She is also intrigued by the arrangement of the chairs. It looks to her as if people sued to gather around to listen to someone read. Maybe Princess Argenta had some little sisters?

“Bah! Who ever heard of such a thing. Mere rumors, I say,” says Edwin. “Magical writings hold mighty powers. For too long I have been in search of one such, the Nether Scroll, and to imply that such a powerful object could be so ludicrous only reveals your ignorance. (And the ape’s illiteracy, foolish naysayer. I will find that scroll one day...)”
Okay, I assume you are trying the non-secret door, then...
The door is not locked and Alora finds no traps.
There is a small fountain of water in one corner of the room. Tapestries hang along both the north and south walls. One shows a scene of a young maiden with golden hair sitting on a silver throne. Upon her head rests a crown of silver and rubies. In one hand, she holds a silver scepter, and in the other hand, she holds a large ruby. The other tapestry shows a warrior in black plate mail resting casually on a wooden chair decorated with carvings. His feet are propped up on a stool.
Except for the tapestries and the fountain, the room is empty.
There is also another exit to the west, right in the middle of the west wall.
Alora will check behind the tapestry for secret doors and will also look closely at the fountain. If she finds nothing she will take the exit to the west.
There is nothing behind the tapestries but wall, and the fountain holds only water.
The room opens into a semi-circular room. The door opens into a 10' wide alcove. On either side of the alcove is the statue of a warrior. They appear to be made of crystal.
Alora thinks the statues are really pretty. "Look at these statues. The light makes such pretty patterns when it bounces off them." Alora goes into the room to study the statues more closely.
OOC: I've got a bad feeling Alora may have just made a big mistake.

There, the book ends.

Like this, but as a warrior statue.
