Maybe we should view this poll as more feedback and not as something definite? We know more about possible problems with these penultimate names. And we're more aware about choosing a name if this magazine does go on for a while. If we still don't have a name we're happy with for issue 2, we could just go with d infinity again? *-)
EDIT Shandyr and I both proposed The Monthly Turnip in the suggestions thread. In retrospect, I could see how some may not appreciate it. And people often choose the joke option in polls. Oh dear. ^_^'
I don't want to drag this on for too long.
It seems to be down to either Wild Surge or The Monthly Turnip. I'll make a B&W banner for both, to illustrate the names and how they'll look on the magazine then start a new poll with those two names only in the next day or two.
Or we could throw in combinations of the two names as well in said second poll. Things like "The Wild Turnip" and "The Monthly Surge" could be fun names too.
I adore all of those options, in all honesty. I think this was the most difficult poll I've come across on this forum so far, lol.
I ultimately decided on The Monthly Turnip. It's extremely unique, and I think it's a good shout out to a fan favourite character in the series.
Or, if not a fan favourite, at least an extremely memorable character, one way or another.
I think that is one of my problems with that choice. It's a reference to one character only.
And I would be inclined to ask if this one character was so much more memorable than ALL the other characters from ALL of the other games by Beamdog. Even future titles.
In fact, was he so memorable that this whole community should be represented by a reference to him?
Jan Jansen is definitely a fan favorite and very memorable but I do worry for people who don't see him that way. Granted, they may be few, but they probably will not be able to identify with the name of the magazine.
This community and all the games by Beamdog would be represented by a turnip. And not only now but also for years to come.
So I find the name very exclusive in the literal sense. It excludes people who don't share the humor. It excludes people who find Jan Jansen not that memorable or do not particularly like him. It excludes references to other great, memorable characters. It excludes all games that do not feature Jan Jansen. And even future games that do not feature him.
I would have the same problem if the magazine's name was dedicated to hamsters for example. Or to any other particular, specific character from the games.
You certainly make a good point. I'll admit, I was racking my brain for a hamster reference. I'm one of those, hahahah.
But that's all definitely something for the team to consider. Even if The Monthly Turnip is one of the most popular choices at the moment, it's still their decision at the end of the day, and I'm sure they appreciate any feedback like that.
If I could have a "second favourite" option, it'd definitely go to Wild Surge, however.

I'm not fan of this series apparently ;]
That's exactly why I added that last bit about him being memorable to my post. I understand there are people out there who don't share my love of gnomes. It's a curse, really. I always find it extremely difficult to not take Jan, Tiax, Quayle, or Glint along in my parties.
Well, maybe let's do a mental exercise. Y'all want this project to be successful, yeah? So, let's imagine that it is. A lot.
Let's imagine that you're applying for funding, big money, people with big names can possibly give it. People who know generally what this thing is about, but don't know the details, have no idea about the gnomes and this specific kind of humour - hermetic, outside of good/bad categories. How would you feel while presenting this magazine, under this specific name? Convincing some guys you look up to and respect that what you do will be amazing! In person, while repeating Monthly Turnip over and over and over again.
I will also point out that while the idea of monthly releases is good, for many reasons - adequate content saturation, with just enough of impatience factor - naming a magazine like that is hellishly risky. It simply calls for fuckups and delays. I'm not trying to kill the enthusiasm, I'm speaking from my experience - better to use enthusiasm for something else.
Even while The Monthly Turnip is related to a joke, it's a normal name for a serious business. I always remember Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes from HP.
I don't look at this name as a joke about the magazine's name.
YES THIS thank you for spelling out what I couldn't And it doesn't really need to be serious in form. It's about autor's serious approach towards their work.

If it was a name like Werebearz Weekly, then I'd share the same trepidation.
This doesn't mean I dont prefer wild surge to turnip, it just that I can live with it.
I should have the banner mock ups done tonight between the two names and have a standoff between the two.
I don't look at this name as a joke about the magazine's name.
But also most likeable.
How about The Ferret?
May a mod please close this poll to keep all discussion in the new one. Thank you
