I'd prefer one more fully fleshed out companion to a handful of sidekicks.
That's the point. There are eight fully fleshed out companions. The sidekicks are for people who would rather have more BG1 style companions without elaborate storylines. They are trying to cater to different types of players.
Most interesting thing there was the party portraits at the bottom of the text adventure dialogue screen. Looks like you can choose who is doing the interacting, similar to NWN2: SoZ.
i'd rather they focused on just the 8 party members then take time away to make blank slates and have characters that should be fleshed out coughalothcough suffer.

Because each detailed character has to interact with every other detailed character the mount of work required to add each one inreases with each addition. The seventh character requires more work the sixth, the eighth would need more than the seveth, etc. And the intention is that PoE2 will have very detailed characters - each one with far more lines than any BG2 companion.
But guess what? Not everyone likes very detailed companions. Some people prefer charactatures like BG1. And adding four BG1 type characters - a full party - is a lot less work than one fully developed companions.
i understand that. there are also people like me that care about story and characters when they play rpgs. and when they are blank slates it takes something away. it's why i'll never play bg1 without the npc project.
and aloth is the one that needs the most fleshing out of the three returning characters. there just was not that much of him in the first game.

I really hope there is an option for the player to choose which choice they made, I definitely encouraged Islmyr.
If you import a save, the game will use the choices you made in PoE 1. Otherwise, you will be able to select the important choices before starting a new game.
I think its time to nail down what I want to be my "canon" save then. Its Mass Effect all over again haha

I'm trying to do a really good playthrough, though I probably will have lasting consequences for sending the people to the top of teir nowneth.

That's why the sidekicks were a goal for if they got money enough to do both.
I wonder if @Shandyr being a Marshmallow will affect the vegetable wars here... will the vegetables do something about this sweet revelation? What about the ferrets?
Fluffle, the Fluffy Marshmallow of the Obsidian Order may sound sweet. But don't be fooled: his true identity is @Shandyr, the Bristly Beaverian of the Rodentia Order! Just look at his bristly avatar! No vegetable is save from his jaws...

2.8 million mark has been reached today!
Yet another stretch goal announced!
SoD would have benefited from that idea.

But sidekicks are not being added at the expense of the main companions.
Next up is $3.25M: Sidekicks.
Just four days to go! I think we can do it!
