If you leave Imoen in Spellhold, she'll find her way back to Athkatla with no problems, and no equipment, or money. You, on the other hand, along with your heavily armed and armored party, have to fight your way through a three-level dungeon, a Sahuagin City and the Underdark!

Imoen is also a fairly decent thief, far beyond a simple catburgular. Barring teleportation she could escaped Spellhold in the ensuing chaos (after the party cleared out the maze that is), snuck onto a boat in Brynnlaw and made her way back to Athkatla.
Alternatively, Imoen doesn't seem like the type who would be above using her charms (both magically and otherwise) to be able to get on a boat and escape to Athkatla.

Well, we never do learn who is Imoen's mother. Maybe she was the owner of a bordello and Immy took after her mother some kinky bondage inclinations.
Or maybe the cowled wizards are just gay (no woman among them anyway).
"I do believe I'll have to practice some enchantment spells on that one"- Chapter 3 guard
So no, not all the Cowled Wizards are gay (or well, most likely asexual)
He never said what kind of enchantment spells he meant. He might've meant Feeblemind, in which case her only value might've been to be sold to the bordello.
What fun is a feebleminded person? It's no different from a blow-up doll.
Charm Person would be much better.
The duration isn't as long for charm person. I also believe the charmed individual retains their memories when it wears off. That could be, well, 'inconvenient'...

In 3E it lasts an hour per level. And Domination lasts a day per level!
You are a thief in Dorn’s Palace. You have a mundane sword, studded leather armor, and 42 gold crowns. In strolls an elf, all by himself. His skin is as stone. Mirror images float about him. He looks blurred. A shield of fire surrounds him. He has a morning star in one hand, and a flail in the other. Both drip with blood.
I know! Let’s backstab him with my mundane sword! Oh? That didn’t work? I know! Let’s try to dual the fighter/Mage/Thief who has cut his way through every single salamander outside.
2nd edition logic: A mage with Stoneskin can take 5 critical hits from a dragon without flinching, but can't take 6 hits from a kobold without bleeding.

He or she deserves to bleed if they are high enough level to cast stoneskin yet get hit six times by a kobold!
@Balrog99: At least one no-reload run has been lost when a solo mage thought that a kobold shaman's Hold Person spell couldn't get past a Minor Spell Deflection.
Dragons are blind and deaf. A thief can walk right up to a dragon, set several traps, and the party can then rest in the dragon's lair before setting more traps. The dragon only notices when the party attacks it, turning it hostile.
Corollary: Traps only notice characters that are hostile to the party. In the foregoing example, the traps will trigger the moment the dragon goes hostile, not before; and the party members can't trigger them by walking right over them.

She swam.

It's more the way he said it, especially considering it was right after "She's a cute one isn't she?" by another guard.
If she was not cute, he might've been tempted in trying some Transmutation spells. Or even Illusion. They both have the same opposite schools.
Charm Person would be much better.
I'm, uh, not talking from personal experience or anything. I heard it from a friend.
And indeed feeblemind turns a person into a loyal absent-minded servant. And that spell last for a very long time.
A dreadmaster of Bane casting feeblemind in IWD2 is terrible to behold. I once used it on Yachtu Xvim avatar. The consequences were funny indeed.

Got to earn that 42 gold coins, right?
I'll allow it
Also I just realized we reached page 20! Awesome, thanks guys.

*Put it in your backpack.*
Gorion Logic: CHARNAME picks Imoen's pocket.
*Lightning bolt both Imoen and CHARNAME to death.*
Assassin Logic: Loudly announce yourself to CHARNAME and attack. 'Tis far more sporting than poisoning his drink at the inn you're both staying at.
Trap Logic: Montaron sets a trap. Sirine charms Montaron.
*Montaron killed by the trap he just set.*
"Uhh.... We're in a sewer, Yeslick."
Elf Logic: I cannot approve of what we have done.
"...Our most recent action was to give a little girl a teddy bear, Coran."
Drow Logic: Yo! Protector whose good name I depend upon to get me out of trouble! Your name is too good, I'm leaving!
"..."
Druid Logic: I can use a spear, but I won't even hold these miniature spears known as "arrows" for you in a quiver.
Wooden weapons? Okay. STRING on a wooden weapon? Abomination!
I can only use curved swords. The curve makes the metal not evil. Except katana and wakisashi, because... yellow peril?
But let's not mention barkskin.
Sorry, I'll let myself out.
