The first time I played, I didn't take him there. I originally learned what happens if you do take him from my sister. She managed to take him to Spellhold on her first playthrough.
Actually, that first character of mine was an interesting guy. He was a half-elf Swashbuckler who dual-wielded short swords, and he and Minsc were the only male members of that party (I think the others were Nalia, Jaheira, Mazzy, and Imoen). That was originally unintentional but I sort of made a head-canon that he had a flirtatious relationship with all of them (easier to do since I also managed to end Jaheira's romance without even realizing I had done so).
Confession: I shamelessly reload everything. I try every option in romance dialogues, get the best out of the deck of many things, learn every spell, nobody dies, ect.

I've never taken Yoshimo into my party, he always seemed shifty to me.
I generally play what is essentially the same character on every playthrough, with mostly minor variations, so there are a good number of classes/races that I haven't played.
Confession: I've never completed a BG romance. Confession: I've only ever finished SoA once with my own character. Confession: I've only ever finished ToB once, and with a character my dad made years before.
Confession: On my first play trough of the original Baldur's Gate I reached Sarevok but I couldn't beat him so I restarted the game.
Confession: My last character was a woman who used the girdle of masculinity from the start (right before Xzar and Montaron joined).
Confession: I'm convinced that the guy Sarevok kills in the beginning of the game (the one with the adorable sock-striped horns) is called Pique and is a wizard slayer.
Confession: There's only one merchant I sell to so I can get my stuff back easily if I wanted to. I never do.
Confession #3: The only mod I have ever really used was a Nalia romance mod.
These were years ago though. I got over my crush since then. It never made sense to me how Nalia was not avaliable for romance. She seemed like a far obvious choice than either Aerie, Jaheira or Viconia. In hindsight, it was probably because Nalia fighting with Aerie, Jaheira or even Viconia over PC's affection isn't very realistic; while Aerie-Jaheira, Aerie-Viconia and Jaheira-Viconia catfights all work like a charm.
Confession: I have never cured the cow in Candlekeep, ever.
!! :O How could... but surely... that's not... how-but-why... O_O
You-you pufflehead! Without a mother, Gorion probably had you suckling at her udder every morning. And this is how you repay her... the cow who raised you? ~_~
I bet even Sarevok paid his respects when he came by Candlekeep. :P "I am sorry, cow-mother. But your child is my rival... and only one may live."
Return to Candlekeep: your estranged udder-mother needs your love and attention! ^-^
Sooo... Charname would then be Sarevok's 'brother from an udder mother'..?

confession: first time i played bg2, i did it completely with a printed walkthrough next to me. And when it was lunch time, i read it while eating and planned my next quest. i had my best game experience in that run
By combining good buffs of a cleric and a mage, you can make Quayle nearly unkillable.
Armour of Faith + Protection from Evil Shield + Mirror Image + Blur + DUHM are basically enough to improve the survivability of Quayle by 80%. Add 4th level spells here (Imroved Invisibility and Stoneskin, Ptotection from Lighting, Free Action) - and Quayle will be a tank.
@bengoshi I probably am. I never had this problem with Aerie, but then again that was on higher levels in BG2... I changed my spell selection a little, we'll see if that helps. I'm not sure DUHM is necessary though, Quayle does have the gauntlets of ogre power.
Confession: I am not a good micro-manager when it comes to buffs.
Confession: I have never used belm/kundane and the flail of ages combo.
Confession: My favorite ranged character is a kensai with grand mastery in daggers(throwing daggers).
Confession: Still don't use my mages for CC.
Confession: I actually like Imoen but since it is cool to hate her I jumped on the bandwagon.
Confession: The only test I have ever failed was in geography because my dad had just bought BG2(probably worth it though).
Confession: I only dared set foot in firewine ruins in BGEE. Not worth it
Confession: I change forum portrait depending on what my charname in BG is currently using. Dwarven fighter/thief at the moment, was dwarven barbarian for a while but got inspired by a thread.
Confession: I'm always jealous of my party members kill count(Especially Dorns...)... To the point where I'm hoarding all the good stuff for myself.
Confession: I have only completed the game once with a male PC, when I first played the game.
Confession: About half of my Charnames are either Half-elves named Poppy or Gnomes named Snowy Tae, who also have been on half my IWD and IWD2 runs. Often together.
Confession: And I miss Aerie's angst, because I never play males anymore.
Confession:I have started way too many bg2 games as of late, with extra strong hard difficulty mods like scs and some of my own, I fight tooth and nail and win impossible odds, and build my character/party well enough. I don't even get bored with my pc or party! Then suddenly I start a new game! What. Is. Wrong. With. Me?

You're using Quayle wrong then.

Had a lot on my heart!
Confession addendum: I feel bad about liking her more after she's been tortured.
Confession: I have yet to beat the game WITHOUT an arcane charname (fighter/mage and sorcerer are it)
Confession: I have soloed Tactics and SCS!!!. . . by removing the XP cap and abusing the GOSH-DURN-HECK out of Simulacrums/Project Images/etc.
Confession: I have never taken Yoshimo in my party since he first betrayed me. He ain't taking MY XP from me!

Confession: My evil playthrough made me feel bad. I forced myself to take the evil options but I don't believe in evil.
Confession: I choose Whirlwind Attack for all characters able to have this High Level ability. It makes Demogorgon and Amelyssan fights easier)
Confession: I purposefully make party members like Shar-Teel and Coran die at the end of BG1 so as to explain why they're not there in BG2.
