If you try to read Edwin's documents (the ones you fetch for him in the Sea's Bounty Tavern in BG2), you need a wisdom of 20 to be able to read them. They turn out to be Dradeel's collection of recipes.
It is possible to get Da'er Ragh to assist you in the encounter with Nimbul. Move one or more members of the party up to the door of the Nashkel Store. Then just as you hear Nimbul beginning his self=promotion read the grave-stone that triggers Da'er Ragh. From there it is nip and tuck re getting rid of the Phoenix Guards but in BG1 you can exit into the Store or Guardhouse for a couple of hours or try to get into the Inn and Rest.
