I always imagined gnomes as some weird half dwarf, half halfling (<- yeah, that sounded better in my head than written out like that). Having a more compact, stocky body (like a dwarf) but not the 'cute as a little baby human' like halflings. I don't know shit about the proper lore though, so I don't know anything about gnomes other than what the games portrait. I tend to almost never play any shortie other than dwarves though. Dwarves rule. Or like we used to say back in the day, they "pwn".
Gnomes are natural illusionists. Who else is a natural illusionist? The magnificent story teller, the talented film maker and the magician that entertains children on their birthday.
Halflings, while awesome and adorable, are natural thieves. You know who else are natural thieves? Burglars, muggers and politicians.
I usually do not like gnomes and do not see their purpose compared with the other short peoples; to me gnomes are quite a thematic mess ranging from burrow-living garden-gnome to purple-haired alchemist-engineer - everything a gnome does, a dwarf or halfling can do as well.
BUT: The gnomes in Baldur's Gate have much character to them (even more so than the halflings).
Did I ever tell you of the time my group's minotaur said he was going to eat the group's kender and my lawful good wizard seriously considered helping?
