Congratulations @JuliusBorisov! I wish my real name was as cool as that. When I worked as an English teacher some years ago, one of my students was a "bengoshi", so everytime I saw your nickname I saw a middle-aged guy in a suit
My nickname is just my first name spelled backwards. Because if there's anything I learned from Baldur's Gate, it's whenever you want to hide your true identity, just spell your first name backwards
@JuliusBorisov we all know the real reason Beamdog brought you on board is so you'd stop leaking all their secrets by stitching together all the evidence!
Mine I explained roughly two years ago on my own profile page, though not to a full extent: I always found most game forums to be quite hostile, or at least highly competitive/standofish territory and didn't know these forums would be any different. After creating this account, I lurked for roughly one year and noticed that there was a friendly vibe to this miniature Utopia of gamers and decided to post and see if I'd feel comfortable here.
While initially I had only ever planed on making a single post, I started to belie my name and it is time to change my name to something more appropriate from justtravelinthrough, since I started feeling at home in these parts. As for the missing 'g' in my name, that's intentional as well, since the song-line which inspired my name at the time had the letter silent as well: "So go on tell all your friends, You're just travelling through." (The song's "Just Traveling Through" by The Thrills and quite corny, though I still like it to this day)
I think I'll keep the absence of the letter 'g' as a mean to retain my identity even after changing my name.
EDIT: Also, great insightful stories on this thread, keep it up, everyone!
@justtravelinthrough , Make sure to have the name changed on your existing account by contacting Beamdog customer service. Don't just make another account and start posting under it, as having multiple accounts is against site rules. We had a member once who created multiple accounts in order to deliberately manipulate threads and approval clicks under multiple posting names, and that person wound up getting banned.
Does mf2112 usually go to sleep earlier than Mr2150, this is the question
Hmm, I guess I am starting to think about hitting the sack about 2112, but I don't end up signing off the forum until 22-something usually. B-) I wake up early every day, haven't needed an alarm in many years.
I had a character Aven, a half-elf shadow dancer. After getting him through BGI i decided I wanted to dual him, so I made another character, Aven The Human. Took him through BGI and BGII. Something funny happened that I wanted to share on the forum so I had to stop lurking and actually register. Just trying to think of a name so I could write about Aven the Human, hey how about Finn The Human, cool lets go.
I once wanted to play this game with a friend. This friend had a problem making her name, since she was very selective and couldn't make up a good name. So I told her to go to a D&D name generator. Five minutes passed and viola, she had a new name (Can't recall it anymore, this was a looong time ago, before the enhanced editions.) I remember it was a cool name, and I thought I started to get tired of naming my charname the same thing. (Again, I can't recall) So I went on to that site and rolled some names. I found two names I thought looked cool, these wer Rel, and the other was Sundan. I really couldn't decide so I made Sundan his last name.
My Charnames have been using this name irregularly for 3-4 years, I sometimes give them other names. Also @JuliusBorisov came with a very good idea with the name Velthur, which I have been using on some Fighter/Mages at times.
But yea, I mostly use RelSundan, so I registred an account with that name. It is cool, isn't it?
Apparently it's official Thread Necromancy Week.
I have been gently nudged into the direction of this thread, so just in case anyone else is curious, here's the explanation of my screen name, which is not particularly mysterious.
I just thought of fictional female characters that I like and who had a name that I liked, too.
In the book series "Codex Alera" by Jim Butcher that I had been reading at the time, there was a woman called Aria Placida that I liked, so I considered Aria. Most people would probably think of Arya Stark in this case, but although I'm not a particular fan of GoT, I liked her, too, so that was fine.
However, being German, I felt uncomfortable with something that sounded so close to "Arian/Aryan" what the nazis believed to be their superior race thing, and I didn't want anyone to think I'm supporting that madness.
So I tried out different consonants to squeeze into Aria to change it slightly, but still make it sound agreeable to me, and that's how I came up with Arvia.
Now I'm so used to that name that I use it universally when I have to register somewhere gaming-related, but apparently there were others with the same idea, because occasionally, like on Steam, Origin and GOG, I had to add an extra letter because the name was taken already.
Maybe others who registered later and therefore hadn't participated in this thread would like to join in now that it's revived?
I'll certainly do some reading now to catch up on the meaning of the names on the 7 pages before this!
I never knew this thread even existed. This is great. As for me, I have had to use noms de plume in my professional life on occasion, and for fun I always drew obscure names from literature to see if anyone would get it or even ask about it. Orlon Kronsteen is a bit character in a Robert McCammon vampire novel - a long-deceased gothic horror movie star. IIRC, he doesn't even appear in the novel, but is only referenced. I am neither deceased or a gothic horror movie star IRL.
Well, I joined this forum between the last time this thread came up and now. Might as well post for my name.
As you might guess, my forum handle is directly related to my in-person name. First initial, first half of last name. I grew up with my parents having "kmerry" and "mmerry" as email handles, so it was only natural that I would do the same. Across multiple sites and many years.
The Balrog was the coolest thing I remember reading about when I first read Tolkien in Middle School. Once the movies came out and I saw the awesome CGI balrog, I couldn't resist trying that as my nom de plume. Unfortunately, Balrog, and Balrog1 were already claimed so I decided, screw it let's try Balrog99 then. The rest is history!
Tom Bombadil, always thought he was the coolest. And he saw the Entwives. And he could wear the ring without becoming invisible or being taken over by it. And he has a pony named Fatty Lumpkin. It almost seems superfluous to say that he had a wife named Goldberry and could see Frodo with his ring on, or that he really didn’t seem like he cared about what the dark lords did. Wanna say badass in one hundred year old literature, Tom Bombadil.
Nightfall was my favorite character and then The Wheel of Time spun out Aviendha so... well, kinda too late at this point. Wait, can I change my name here?

That's impressive vintage for a moniker - and I mean this as Ardbeg 1977! (Islay Whisky, just to make clear for non-whisky drinkers)

I literally choked on my chocolate dipped in peanut butter there!
